Cefuroxime Sodium | Medicine Information

Cefuroxime sodium is a medication that belongs to the class of antibiotics known as cephalosporins. It is used to treat a variety of bacterial infections, such as pneumonia, bronchitis, sinusitis, urinary tract infections, skin and soft tissue infections, and certain sexually transmitted infections.

Cefuroxime sodium works by preventing bacteria from forming their cell walls, which ultimately leads to their death. It is administered either by injection into a vein (intravenous) or into a muscle (intramuscular).

As with any medication, cefuroxime sodium may cause side effects such as diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, headache, and skin rash. Rarely, it can cause more serious side effects such as an allergic reaction or severe diarrhea caused by Clostridium difficile bacteria.

It is important to take cefuroxime sodium exactly as prescribed by your healthcare provider and to complete the full course of treatment, even if you feel better before the medication is finished. Do not stop taking cefuroxime sodium without consulting your healthcare provider.
