Fancy New Migraine Meds: Better than the old?
Migraines suck. If this wasn't bad enough, they put you at risk of things like strokes, heart attacks, hot flashes and pregnancy complications.
Nothing can smash your quality of life and interfere with your interactions with your family and friends more than a migraine headache.
I've had many patients over the years that have suffered with migraines for decades. For those patients willing to make the right changes, almost all of them became headache-free.
In almost every case, it's the blood vessels that are pissed off at you. The technical term is "endothelial dysfunction" and it means that the blood vessels that feed your brain cells are not acting like they should be.
If we just focus on controlling the migraines and don't fix the underlying problem, it's going to have an impact on other important aspects of your life.
The good news? Healing your blood vessels and your brain is entirely possible with the right lifestyle choices.
You know what does NOT fix the blood vessels?
Migraine meds.
Yes, even the new fancy (and expensive) calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) antagonists like Aimovig and Ubrelvy do NOT make blood vessels healthy.
It's not that we don't give migraine meds out despite not fixing the problem. It's just part of the "plan" to help migraine patients (because making lifestyle changes is so hard!).
But are these new migraine meds any better than the old migraine meds like the triptan family of drugs? The new drugs are certainly WAY more expensive (i.e. make more money for the drug companies) and more potential side effects.
But hey--they're shinier and more expensive so they've got to work better, right??
