Lidocaine is also known as the brand names: Lidoderm.
Lidocaine is most commonly used to treat post shingles pain but can also be used to temporary relieve pain associated with other disorders. No matter what your doctor has you taking it for, lidocaine most commonly comes as a patch that is applied to painful areas for up to 12 hours. Up to 3 patches may be applied in a single use. It can also be applied as an ointment in which it is applied to the affected area 3 to 4 times a day.
Some common side effects of lidocaine are skin reddening, skin rash, or red or purple spots on the skin.
Some less common side effects are skin itching, nausea, vomiting and bruising.
While taking lidocaine, it is important to remember to tell you doctor or pharmacist if you experience any of the following:
• Signs of an allergic reaction (wheezing, chest tightness, fever, itching, bad cough, blue skin color, etc.)
• Sign of a skin infection (skin irritation, redness, burning or numbness feeling)
• If you start taking new medications, vitamins, or supplements
• Your condition does not improve or you develop new or worsening symptoms
