- Nifedipine is a calcium channel blocker. It inhibits movement of calcium ions across cell membrane in systemic and coronary vascular smooth muscle, leading to vasodilatation and reduction in peripheral vascular resistance. So it reduces myocardial oxygen demand, and relaxes and prevents coronary artery spasm.
- It is available as 10, 20 mg immediate-release capsules, and 30, 60, and 90 mg extended-release tablets.
- Nifedipine is used in the treatment hypertension, and for chronic stable angina or vasospastic angina, also known as Prinzmetal’s angina.
