Indication

hypertension, angina, arrhythmias, cardiomyopathy, alcohol withdrawal, anxiety
Action

blocks Beta 1 and 2 adrenergic receptors
Therapeutic Class

antianginal, antiarrhythimic (class II beta blockers), antihypertensive, headache suppressant
Pharmacologic Class

beta blocker
Nursing Considerations

• contraindicated in CHF, pulmonary edema, cardiogenic shock, bradycardia, heart block • monitor hemodynamic parameters (HR, BP) • may cause bradycardia, CHF, pulmonary edema • masks symptoms of hypoglycemia associated with diabetes mellitus • advise to change positions slowly to prevent orthostatic hypotension • instruct patient on how to take blood pressure • stopping abruptly may result in life threatening arrhythmias • monitor daily intake and output • advise patient to notify physician for difficulty breathing
