CINCINNATI (WKRC) - There are new concerns about some of the alternatives to opioids now being used for pain control.

Back pain is often the reason people turn to traditional opioid medications.

In an effort of course to reduce the use of these medications and the potential for addiction many health care providers are suggesting other medications for patients you get by prescription at the pharmacy.

These generally are considered less addictive for patients.

But a new warning was recently released on some of these other medications based on a study in the Canadian Medical Association Journal.

When many of these other medications were reviewed they were not only considered ineffective for back pain but they also led to a high risk of side effects for many people.

A few were mentioned by Consumer Reports on Health: Gabapentin, Pregabalin, Lyrica and Topiramate.

It's suggested you ask your pharmacist about the risks associated with these medications as everyone reacts differently to prescriptions.
