The worst laxative & better alternatives | #gutmicrobiome
Lactulose can be so problematic, both practically with the stickiness that gets everywhere, and the too sweet & sickly taste, as well as pharmacological issues with slow mechanism of action and side-effects from fermentation by the gut microbiome especially for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and small intestinal bacterial overgrowth.
Alternatives include macrogols, bisacodyl, docusate, senna, depending on the cause of the constipation such as opioid or medication induction constipation, IBS, pregnancy, chronic etc.
