Zofran is an anti-sickness medicine used to relieve nausea and vomiting in patients following cancer treatment, or operations under general anaesthesia.

Serotonin is a natural chemical called a neurotransmitter found in the brain, which transmits signals between nerve cells in the body. Certain cancer therapies and surgeries can cause serotonin to be released in the body.

The specific kinds of serotonin these treatments can cause to release are found in the brain and gut. When there is an increase of this kind of serotonin, it sends messages to an area of the brain called the vomiting centre, making you feel nauseated.

Zofran dampens these nerve messages, alleviating feelings of sickness.
