The main difference between them is their formulas.
Though both supplements ease constipation, they work differently. The active ingredient in Benefiber is wheat dextrin, a natural prebiotic fiber. This fiber supplement works by absorbing water in the intestinal tract and moving intestinal contents. Since wheat dextrin is fermented in the intestines, it loses its capacity to hold water.
On the other hand, Metamucil contains psyllium husks, a gel-based fiber. When this ingredient combines with water, it swells and promotes the passage of stool through the digestive tract. Since psyllium husks is not fermented, it holds water in the stool throughout the bowel and offers a hydrated stool that is easy to excrete.
