This is not a normal cancer. Carcinoid tumors are rare, with only 27 new cases per million diagnosed in the U.S. per year.
Standard treatment is surgery to remove the entire tumor. Octreotide is not a cancer treatment. It is used as a growth inhibitor and may help with symptoms of Carcinoid syndrome. Carcinoid syndrome occurs in very few people with carcinoid tumors, after the tumor has spread to the liver or lung.
These tumors release too much of the hormone serotonin, as well as several other chemicals. The hormones cause the blood vessels to open (dilate). This causes carcinoid syndrome.

Hello viewers and welcome to Never Miss a Dose, Echo Pharmacy’s weekly look inside the medicine cabinet of the nation. In this series, we’ll take a look at the most commonly prescribed medication in the UK, what they’re used to treat and how best to take them. We’ll also do a demonstration at the end of each episode - it’s worth waiting for!
In the third episode in our six-part series on the UK’s 6 most common drugs on (long term) repeat prescription, our Chief Pharmacist Alistair Murray gives us a brief rundown on the key facts on amlodipine, which is most commonly used to treat high blood pressure. Alistair also demonstrates the difference between high and low blood pressure using some clever tubing and a LOT of water - check it out at 0.47 💦💦💦
Today we’ll answer:
*What amlodipine is
*How it works to lower blood pressure
*The possible side effects of taking amlodipine
*Why it’s important to stay adherent when taking amlodipine
For more information on how and when to take amlodipine, including the facts on amlodipine and alcohol, and why you shouldn’t have any grapefruit when taking amlodipine, take a look at Alistair’s blog post here: https://www.echo.co.uk/blog/what-is-amlodipine
