Understanding the Common Side Effects of Valsartan (sold under the brand name: Diovan, which is registered trademark),

Welcome to our educational video by Dr. Lukasz Kiljanek, a Board Certified Nephrologist, Hypertension Specialist, and Internal Medicine physician.

Valsartan a widely prescribed medication for high blood pressure (hypertension), heart failure or kidney disease. While it is highly effective, it's important to be aware of potential side effects. In this video, we'll discuss common side effects.

Cough: Some people might experience a persistent dry cough while taking Valsartan. If you develop a cough, let your healthcare provider know. There are other medications that provide almost the same benefits as Valsartan but may not cause a cough.

Dizziness: Dizziness can happen, especially if your blood pressure lowers too much or if you are dehydrated.

High Potassium level: Valsartan can cause your potassium levels to become high. Your healthcare provider will likely monitor your potassium levels, usually 3-4 weeks after starting Valsartan or increasing the dose of Valsartan to make sure potassium stays within a safe range.

Increased creatinine level: Creatinine level can go up, and this sometimes indicates that the medication is actually working. Blood work will be needed to monitor creatinine levels to ensure it remains within safe ranges, usually 3-4 weeks after starting Valsartan or increasing the dose of Valsartan.

Always notify your healthcare provider if you develop any side effects or have any concerns or questions about your medication. They can provide the best advice and support for your specific situation.

Diazepam
Diazepam Side Effects 2 Views • 5 months ago

Originally approved in 1959, diazepam marketed as Valium ultimately became the first drug to surpass $1 billion in yearly sales. Even though the drug is more than 60 years old, it still ranks as the 112th most frequently prescribed drug in the United States. This benzodiazepine belongs to the same family as Xanax, Klonopin, Ativan, Serax and Restoril.

Principally prescribed to treat anxiety related disorders, diazepam may be helpful in combating skeletal muscle spasms, alcohol withdrawal related delirium tremens and short term insomnia. Diazepam also may ameliorate complications resulting from hallucinogens and certain stimulants - LSD, cocaine and methamphetamine. Diazepam also provides temporary relief of seizures.

Governmental guidelines discourage use of the benzodiazepines in general and specifically diazepam. Diazepam has a long half life and tends to accumulate in the body with regular use. In senior citizens, diazepam may interfere with memory and coordination and result in confusion, slurred speech, difficulty walking and depression.

Non-medical use of diazepam in combination with opioids regularly leads to respiratory depression, coma and death. An intentional or accidental overdosage with diazepam by itself seldom results in death. Common drug related fatalities occur with various mixtures of diazepam, alcohol, opioids, barbiturates, heroin and other central nervous system depressants. This lethal cocktail kills more than 10,000 individuals each year.

Doctor explains Zopiclone | Uses, doses, side effects and more [Educational guide]
Doctor explains Zopiclone | Uses, doses, side effects and more [Educational guide] Side Effects 2 Views • 5 months ago

In this video Doctor O'Donovan explains key things you need to know about zopiclone - a sleeping aid medication that is used commonly to treat insomnia.

Other names for Zopiclone are Imovane.

Zopiclone is a type of sleeping pill that can be taken for short-term treatment of severe insomnia.

It helps you fall asleep more quickly, and also helps stop you waking up during the night. It works by affecting a calming chemical in your brain called gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA).

Zopiclone comes as tablets. It also comes as a liquid for people who find it hard to swallow tablets, but your doctor will have to order this specially.

This medicine is only available on prescription.

Key facts

1. Zopiclone takes around 1 hour to work.
2. It's usually prescribed for just 2 to 4 weeks. This is because your body gets used to it quickly and after this time it's unlikely to have the same effect. Your body can also become dependent on it.
3. Common side effects are a metallic taste in your mouth, a dry mouth, and daytime sleepiness.
4. Do not drink alcohol while you're on zopiclone. Having them together can make you go into a deep sleep where you find it difficult to wake up.
5. If zopiclone makes you feel sleepy in the daytime, do not drive a car, ride a bike or use machinery.

**‘Reporting of side effects**

If you get any side effects, talk to your doctor, pharmacist or nurse. This includes any possible side effects not listed in the package leaflet. You can also report side effects directly via the Yellow Card Scheme at [a website address which links directly to the MHRA Yellow Card site].

By reporting side effects, you can help provide more information on the safety of this medicine.’

Benzodiazepine Withdrawal Explained
Benzodiazepine Withdrawal Explained Side Effects 3 Views • 5 months ago

Today's video is reviews basic concepts about Benzodiazepine Withdrawal in easy to understand terminology.

Benzodiazepines aka tranquilizers/sedatives are commonly prescribed around the world (Xanax, Ativan, Klonopin, Valium) to spot treat anxiety and insomnia. But, these medications carry a potential inherent risk of patients developing a physical tolerance and physical/psychological dependence on them. When that point of tolerance is reached, there is a higher risk of going through withdrawal when trying to stop or gradually come off this medications. And this concept of withdrawal will be the primary focus of today's educational discussion.

Topics Covered:
*What are benzodiazepines & which ones are commonly prescribed ones?
*Why Benzodiazepine Withdrawal Occurs
*Reviewing the concept of responsible prescribing/usage vs the type of usage that will put you at higher risk of tolerance/dependence
*General Risk Factor Considerations
*Reviewing Mild, Moderate, and Severe withdrawal signs/symptoms
*Emphasizing the importance of needing to detox off benzodiazepines under medical guidance/supervision.

Unveiling Valtrex: Exploring Uses, Dosage, and Potential Side Effects
Unveiling Valtrex: Exploring Uses, Dosage, and Potential Side Effects Side Effects 2 Views • 5 months ago

Welcome to an insightful exploration of Valtrex, a medication widely recognized for its effectiveness in managing certain viral infections. In this guide, we will delve into what Valtrex is used for, its recommended dosage, its various applications, and potential side effects.

Valtrex: A Brief Introduction

Valtrex is the brand name for the generic drug valacyclovir. Valacyclovir is an antiviral medication that is used to treat herpes infections, including herpes zoster (shingles), genital herpes, and cold sores. It is an oral medication that belongs to a class of drugs known as nucleoside analogs, which work by slowing the growth and spread of the herpes virus in the body.

What is Valtrex Used For?

Herpes Zoster (Shingles):
Valtrex is often prescribed to individuals who have been diagnosed with shingles. Shingles is a painful rash caused by the same virus that causes chickenpox (varicella-zoster virus). Valtrex helps to alleviate the symptoms associated with shingles and promotes faster healing.

Genital Herpes:
Genital herpes is a common sexually transmitted infection caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV). Valtrex is used to manage and reduce the frequency of outbreaks, lessen the severity of symptoms during an outbreak, and reduce the risk of transmission to others.

Cold Sores:
Cold sores, also known as fever blisters, are caused by the herpes simplex virus. Valtrex is prescribed to treat cold sores in adults and adolescents aged 12 years and older. It helps in reducing the healing time and discomfort associated with these sores.

Valtrex Dose: Understanding the Right Dosage

Dosage for Shingles:
The recommended dose of Valtrex for shingles is 1 gram taken three times a day for seven days. It's best to start the treatment as early as possible after the shingles rash appears to achieve the maximum benefit.

Dosage for Genital Herpes:
The typical dose of Valtrex for an initial outbreak of genital herpes is 1 gram twice daily for ten days. For recurrent outbreaks, the dosage is 500 mg twice daily for three days.

Dosage for Cold Sores:
For the treatment of cold sores, the recommended dose is 2 grams twice daily for one day, taken about 12 hours apart. It is best to start treatment at the first signs of a cold sore.

Balancing Benefits and Risks: Valtrex Side Effects

Common Side Effects:
Common side effects of Valtrex may include nausea, stomach pain, headache, dizziness, or tired feeling. These side effects are generally mild and often improve on their own.

Serious Side Effects:
In rare cases, Valtrex can cause more severe side effects, such as unsteady or shaky movements, confusion, mood or behavior changes, hallucinations, feeling agitated, and difficulty speaking or concentrating. If any of these symptoms occur, it is important to seek medical attention immediately.

Patient Experiences: Valtrex Reviews

Linda's Journey: A Life Changed
Linda shares her experience with Valtrex in managing recurrent genital herpes outbreaks. She discusses how Valtrex has not only reduced the frequency and severity of her outbreaks but has also provided her with peace of mind.

Mike's Story: Overcoming Shingles with Valtrex
Mike recounts his battle with shingles and how Valtrex played a crucial role in his recovery. He emphasizes the importance of timely treatment and adhering to the prescribed dosage.

Conclusion: Navigating Valtrex for a Better Quality of Life

In conclusion, Valtrex stands as an effective tool in the management of herpes infections, including shingles, genital herpes, and cold sores. Understanding its uses, appropriate dosage, and potential side effects equips individuals and healthcare providers with the knowledge needed to make informed decisions regarding its usage.

Thank you.

Genital Herpes in Women
Genital Herpes in Women Side Effects 3 Views • 5 months ago

Genital herpes is a common type of sexually transmitted disease or infection. It is more common in women than men. The infection commonly affects your genitals, which are the reproductive organs inside and outside of your body. It can also affect your buttocks, anal area, or mouth. Genital herpes is most often caused by the herpes simplex virus type two, or HSV-2. While herpes simplex virus type one, or HSV-1, may cause genital herpes as well, it more commonly infects the lips, mouth, or gums. It causes painful blisters, often referred to as cold sores. This is called oral herpes. Occasionally, HSV-2 can also cause oral herpes. You can catch the herpes virus from an infected person through close, personal contact during genital or oral sex. The virus can enter your body through a break in your skin, or through the tissue that lines many of your body cavities, including the tissue lining your mouth and genitals. Once inside the skin, the virus can multiply within your cells. This damages the cells and inflames your skin, causing painful sores as your body tries to control the infection. As your skin begins to heal, some viruses enter branches of your nerve cells, called axons. The virus travels through the axons to an area near your spinal cord, where they become dormant, or inactive. This is known as the herpes latent stage. At a later time, certain triggers can make the virus active again, such as stress, illness, exposure to sunlight, and having your period. When this happens, the virus can return down your axons to your skin, causing another round of sores. The main risk for getting genital herpes is having oral, anal, or vaginal sex with a person who is infected. There is a higher risk of an infected male passing it to an uninfected female during vaginal sex than an infected female passing it to an uninfected male. This may happen because the tissue in a woman’s vagina is more prone to small tears, enabling the virus to enter the body. Your risk of infection also goes up as the number of sex partners you have increases. If you have the human immunodeficiency virus, or HIV, you have an increased risk of getting genital herpes. Many people never have symptoms. And there are no symptoms during latent stages. But symptoms of an active infection in women include painful sores or blisters in the genital area. Common sites include the genitals on the outside of your body, also known as the vulva, the vagina, cervix, anus, thighs, and buttocks. In men, the common sites of sores or blisters include the penis, scrotum, anus, thighs, and buttocks. In both men and women, sores may also be found on the lips, tongue, gums, eyes, and fingers. Other symptoms include painful or difficult urination, feeling unwell or having flu-like symptoms, and swollen lymph nodes in the groin. In people with a weakened immune system, such as those with HIV, genital sores can be severe and long-lasting. If your immune system is weak, the herpes virus may also spread to other parts of your body, such as the brain and spinal cord, eyes, esophagus, lungs, and liver. And, during vaginal childbirth, women can also pass the herpes virus to their newborn baby if they become infected or have a secondary outbreak near their delivery date. There is no cure for genital herpes. Once infected, your body will always harbor the virus. People who aren’t sexually active and rarely or never have symptoms may not need any treatment. But your healthcare provider can prescribe an antiviral medication to prevent or reduce symptoms, such as acyclovir or valacyclovir. If you only have a few outbreaks a year, you may only need antiviral medication during each outbreak. This is called episodic therapy. If you have many outbreaks a year, or if you are sexually active, you may take antiviral medication daily. This is called suppressive therapy. It can prevent outbreaks, reduce how many outbreaks you have, reduce how long outbreaks last, and reduce the risk of passing genital herpes to a sex partner. If you have genital herpes, taking antiviral medication and using latex condoms during sex can help prevent its spread to others. To find out more about genital herpes, talk to your healthcare provider.

Valacyclovir: The Antiviral Medication That Can Help Treat Herpes and Cold Sores
Valacyclovir: The Antiviral Medication That Can Help Treat Herpes and Cold Sores Side Effects 5 Views • 5 months ago

In the realm of antiviral medications, Valacyclovir stands out as a powerful weapon against herpes infections. This comprehensive guide will provide you with valuable insights into the benefits, mechanism of action, usage, and potential side effects of Valacyclovir. Whether you are seeking information for medical purposes or simply looking to enhance your knowledge on this topic, this article will serve as a valuable resource.

Understanding Herpes Infections
Herpes is a viral infection caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV). There are two main types of HSV: HSV-1, which primarily causes oral herpes or cold sores, and HSV-2, which primarily causes genital herpes. These infections can be highly contagious and have the potential for recurrent outbreaks throughout an individual's lifetime.

The Role of Valacyclovir in Herpes Treatment
Valacyclovir is an antiviral medication that belongs to the class of drugs known as nucleoside analogues. It works by inhibiting the replication of the herpes virus, thus reducing the severity and duration of outbreaks. Valacyclovir is most commonly used to treat genital herpes, but it can also be prescribed for oral herpes and other herpes-related conditions.

Effectiveness of Valacyclovir
Numerous clinical trials and real-world studies have demonstrated the efficacy of Valacyclovir in managing herpes infections. It has been shown to significantly reduce the duration and frequency of outbreaks, alleviate symptoms, and promote faster healing.

Valacyclovir has also been proven effective in reducing the risk of transmission of genital herpes to sexual partners when taken as a daily suppressive therapy. This can provide peace of mind and help prevent the spread of the virus.

Dosage and Administration
Valacyclovir is available in tablet form and is typically taken orally. The dosage and duration of treatment may vary depending on the specific herpes infection being treated and the individual's medical history. It is crucial to follow the prescribed dosage and administration instructions provided by a healthcare professional.

For the management of recurrent genital herpes outbreaks, a short course of high-dose Valacyclovir is often recommended. For suppressive therapy, a lower dosage taken daily may be prescribed to reduce the frequency of outbreaks.

Potential Side Effects
Like any medication, Valacyclovir can cause side effects in some individuals. The most common side effects include headache, nausea, and abdominal pain. These side effects are generally mild and well-tolerated.

In rare cases, more severe side effects may occur, such as allergic reactions, changes in kidney function, or neurological symptoms. It is important to be aware of these potential side effects and promptly report any concerning symptoms to a healthcare professional.

Conclusion: Taking Control of Herpes Infections
In conclusion, Valacyclovir offers an effective and reliable treatment option for managing herpes infections. Its ability to reduce the frequency, severity, and duration of outbreaks, as well as its potential for reducing transmission risk, make it a valuable tool in the fight against herpes.

Remember, this guide serves as an informative resource, but it is always recommended to consult with a healthcare professional for personalized advice and guidance regarding your specific medical condition. By staying informed, taking proactive measures, and adhering to prescribed treatments, you can take control of your herpes infections and maintain a high quality of life.
Precautions and Contraindications
Before starting Valacyclovir treatment, it is crucial to inform your healthcare professional about any pre-existing medical conditions, ongoing medications, and allergies. Valacyclovir should be used with caution in individuals with impaired kidney function or a history of kidney disease.

It is also important to note that Valacyclovir is not a cure for herpes. While it can effectively manage outbreaks and reduce transmission risk, it does not eliminate the virus from the body. Safe sexual practices, including the use of condoms and open communication with sexual partners, are still essential in preventing the spread of herpes.
