Fatal Side Effects
This is an informational overview video on Varenicline. Varenicline is available under several brandnames: Champix and Chantix. It is only available as a tablet.
When to use it?
Varenicline can be used to support stoping smoking, by decreasing your craving for a cigarette.
And for those of you watching, planning to quit smoking, I have already made a more general video on “How to quit smoking”, that provides you with all the necessary tips and tricks! You can find it here: https://youtu.be/WSUbXPGOBdw
How to use it?
Swallow it tablet whole, with a glass of water. Do not chew on it or crush it.
And always take it at fixed times: preferably in the morning and in the evening. This lowers your chances on forgetting a dose.
What is the correct dosage?
Starting dose: 0,5 mg 1x/day for 3 days:
Increase the dose to 0.5 mg 2×/day for 4 days:
Increase the dose to the maintenance dose, which is 1 mg 2 ×/day.
If you forget to take a dose, than skip it, and take the next tablet when you usually do so.

What are the side-effects?
Very common (10% or more):
Nausea (29%), common cold, abnormal dreams, insomnia and headache.
Common (1-10%):
Bronchitis, dry mouth, upset stomach, vomiting, constipation, diarrhea, decreased appetite, weight gain, drowsiness, tiredness, dizziness, arthralgia, muscle pain, back pain, toothache.
Driving while using Varenicline:
Avoid driving your car the first days you start using varenicline. This is because you might experience some side effects like dizziness and fatigue, which do not exactly make driving very safe. The same is true every time your dose is increased.
Now after 1 week most people are used to the effects, and than it is safe again to drive.
Pregnancy and Lactation:
Avoid varenicline, it is harmful for your baby.

Varenicline (marketed as Champix or Chantix), is prescribed to help people quit smoking.
After varenicline’s introduction on the market, reports of suicidality and depression emerged in post-marketing surveillance and eventually led to warnings issued by regulatory agencies in Europe and a black box warning in the United States. Furthermore, varenicline has been reported to increase the risk of traffic accidents, and it has been restricted or prohibited in several transportation industry professions, including pilots, air traffic controllers, truck and bus drivers, and certain military personnel. Some weaker evidence also suggests an increased risk of violence and psychosis.
However, these increased risks are based on post-marketing surveillance and case reports, which are not consistent with observational data and randomised controlled trials that have found no association between varenicline and depression, suicidality, or violence. These inconsistencies could be explained by differences in study designs, confounding by comorbid psychiatric disorders or by indication bias (that is, the same factors may influence both institution of treatment and outcomes), or reporting bias. Moreover, people with mental health problems make up a substantial proportion of smokers. Although no safety concerns have been raised in randomised controlled trials of varenicline in people with bipolar disorder, major depression, and schizophrenia, trials have comprised small samples, resulting in limited statistical power to detect rare events.
In this study the author's used data from the whole population of Sweden to examine associations between varenicline and the incidence of a range of adverse outcomes.
The conclude that concerns that varenicline is associated with an increased risk of many adverse outcomes, including suicidality and accidents, are not supported in this observational study. The small increase in risk of two psychiatric conditions in people with pre-existing psychiatric disorders needs to be confirmed using other research designs.

Vancomycin is a powerful antibiotic drug that is used to treat infections caused by gram-positive bacteria. It is typically given intravenously, although it is also available in some other forms, such as oral capsules and liquid suspensions.
Vancomycin works by inhibiting the formation of the bacterial cell wall, which is an essential part of the structure that protects bacteria from their environment. Without the cell wall, bacteria become vulnerable to damage and are unable to survive.
Vancomycin is commonly used to treat infections caused by Staphylococcus aureus, including MRSA, as well as other gram-positive bacteria such as Streptococcus pneumoniae and Enterococcus faecalis. It is often used in hospital settings for serious infections that are resistant to other antibiotics.
Vancomycin is generally considered safe when used appropriately, but it can cause some potential side effects. These include kidney damage, hearing loss, and allergic reactions such as rash, itching, and difficulty breathing. It can also interact with other medications, so it is important to inform your healthcare provider of all medications, supplements, and herbs that you are taking before starting vancomycin.
It is important to note that overuse of vancomycin and other antibiotics can lead to the development of antibiotic-resistant bacteria, which is a growing concern worldwide. Therefore, vancomycin and other antibiotics should only be used when necessary and as prescribed by a healthcare provider.

• Red man syndrome (RMS) is the most common allergic reaction to vancomycin. It generally occurs during rapid infusion of vancomycin. Although red man syndrome is known to be a rapidly infusion-related reaction, it may also occur when vancomycin is infused in a slow rate.
• Signs of red man syndrome would appear about 4–10 min after an infusion started or may begin soon after its completion. It is often associated with rapid (less than 1 hour) infusion of the first dose of vancomycin. Symptoms of red man syndrome typically consist of pruritus, an erythematous rash that involves the face, neck, and upper torso. Less frequently, hypotension and angioedema can occur. In severe cases, patients complain of chest pain and dyspnea.
• Treatment & management of red man syndrome: Studies have shown that vancomycin is much better tolerated when it is given in smaller and more frequent doses. In clinical situations where prolonged infusion times are often impractical, as in the intensive care unit or an operative setting, especially ambulatory orthopedic or emergency procedures, pretreatment with antihistamines combined with an H2 receptor blocker can offer protection against this infusion-related reaction with vancomycin.

About VALACYCLOVIR
VALACYCLOVIR contains a class of antiviral medication, valaciclovir, used to treat viral infections. It plays a vital role in treating cold sores (an inflamed blister in or near the mouth caused by infection with the herpes simplex virus), genital herpes (A common sexually transmitted infection marked by genital pain and sores), and herpes zoster (a viral infection that causes a painful rash). VALACYCLOVIR does not cure herpes but instead does not allow the infection to spread and treat its symptoms.
VALACYCLOVIR contains valacyclovir, which is an antiviral medication. VALACYCLOVIR is used in treating viral infection by preventing the multiplication of viruses in human cells. As a result, this stops the proliferation of viruses and produces new viruses, slowly leading to the viral infection clearing up.

Join us on the latest episode of Talking with Docs as we dive into the intriguing world of shingles, a viral infection that affects millions of people worldwide. In this episode, our esteemed medical experts explore the causes, symptoms, and treatment options for shingles, providing invaluable insights to help you understand and manage this often-painful condition.
Shingles, also known as herpes zoster, is caused by the reactivation of the varicella-zoster virus, the same virus that causes chickenpox. Our doctors discuss how the virus lies dormant within the body after a person recovers from chickenpox and can resurface later in life, leading to the development of shingles. They shed light on the factors that can trigger this reactivation, including age, weakened immune system, stress, and certain medical conditions.
During the episode, our medical experts delve into the telltale signs and symptoms of shingles, emphasizing the importance of early diagnosis. They outline the characteristic rash, often accompanied by intense pain, itching, and a tingling sensation. The doctors also touch upon the risk of complications such as postherpetic neuralgia, where pain persists long after the rash has healed, and other potential complications involving the eyes, ears, and nervous system.
In their comprehensive discussion, our doctors explore various treatment approaches for shingles. They shed light on antiviral medications that can help shorten the duration of the illness and reduce the severity of symptoms, as well as the importance of seeking prompt medical attention. Furthermore, they highlight the role of pain management techniques, including over-the-counter and prescription medications, to alleviate discomfort and improve quality of life during the recovery process.
Whether you or a loved one have experienced shingles or simply want to expand your medical knowledge, this episode of "Talking with Docs" offers invaluable information straight from the experts. Join us as we unravel the mystery of shingles, empowering you with the knowledge to recognize, treat, and prevent this common yet often misunderstood condition.

In this video, we discuss the serious health risks associated with Valsartan, a commonly prescribed medication for high blood pressure and heart failure. Valsartan has been linked to various health issues, including cancer, kidney failure, liver failure, and a lowered white blood cell count. It has also been associated with birth defects and should not be taken by pregnant women.
The recall of Valsartan was initiated due to possible contamination with nitrosamines, which are known to cause tumors in lab animals and are believed to be carcinogenic in humans. The FDA has expressed concern over these contaminants, as they can cause harm even at very low levels.

Valsartan commonly known by it’s brand name Diovan is used to treat high blood pressure also called hypertension for adults and children 6 years and older.
Valsartan belongs to a group of medicines called angiotensin II receptor antagonists (AIIRAs). It is most commonly known by it’s brand name Diovan. Angiotensin II is a substance in the body which causes blood vessels to narrow, when blood vessels narrow, blood pressure increases. Valsartan works by blocking the effect of angiotensin II, thus relaxes the blood vessels and causes blood pressure to go down. Valsartan is commonly prescribed when patients can’t tolerate an irritating cough that is caused by an ACE inhibitor such as perindorpil and ramipril.
Valsartan is also used to treat heart failure, where the heart is not strong enough to pump blood all around the body and also put on people whom have had a heart attack, to prevent further heart
damage and problems.
Valsartan is used either alone or in combination with other medicines used to treat high
blood pressure. Combination therapy is used when using it alone is not enough to bring
the blood pressure under control. Valsartan is often combined with hydrochlorothiaze,
medicine brand name like Co-Diovan, or with amlodipine and or Hydrocholrothiazide,
medicine brands like Exforge.
Before you start to take it
Tell your doctor if you have allergic to Valsartan to any other medicines, foods, preservatives or
dyes.
Tell your doctor if you have any heart, kidney or liver disease.
more in video....
Valsartan can interact with many other medications as well, to
name a few your anti-inflammatories like Celebrate, Voltaren,
Indocid.
more in video...
Dosages of Valsartan
Dependent on on your condition, dosages of Valsartan varies.
For adults, For hypertension, the usual dose is one 80 mg tablet once a day. If your blood
pressure is still too high after 4 weeks, your doctor may increase the dose to 160 mg once a
day, or from 160 mg to 320 mg once a day. If your blood pressure is still too high, your doctor
may add a different type of blood pressure lowering medicine.
For heart failure the usual starting dose is 40 mg twice daily. Your doctor may increase the
dose gradually up to one 160 mg tablet twice daily.
Following a heart attack, treatment is generally started at a dose of 20 mg (half a 40 mg tablet)
twice daily. Your doctor may increase the dose gradually up to 160 mg twice daily.
How to take it, When to take it
Swallow the tablet with a drink of water. It does not matter if you take it before or after food, as
long as you take it the same way each day. If your stomach is upset after taking it, always take
it after food.
How long to take it
It will take at least 4 weeks for this medicine to have its full effect. After your review with
the doctor, the doctor will let you know how long to take it for. This is usually a long term
medication as it doesn’t cure but only controls your condition. So don’t stop unless the
doctor tells you to.
While you are taking Diovan
Things you must do
If you become pregnant while taking Diovan, tell your doctor immediately. You should not take
this medicine while you are pregnant.
