It's important to understand how statins work so you can also understand the potential side effects.

Statins are a family of drugs that act by lowering the production of a key enzyme that is essential for the production of cholesterol. This in turn lowers cholesterol. But things rarely have one job in the body. The enzyme also is essential for the creation of CoQ10, which the mitochondria in your cells need for energy.

This is why statins can cause muscle pain in some people, because energy deficient muscles break down. And at high doses, statins can even damage the heart because the heart is a muscle.
