Anticonvulsant drugs are classified as either classic or newer anticonvulsants. Newer anticonvulsants are usually better tolerated and have a broader therapeutic range than classic anticonvulsant drugs. The choice of drug is guided by the type of seizure. First-line treatment for focal seizures includes e.g., lamotrigine or levetiracetam, while valproate is used for generalized seizures. All anticonvulsants have dose-dependent side effects on the central nervous system such as somnolence and nausea, but some agents have more specific side effects (e.g., gingival hyperplasia caused by phenytoin).
Besides their importance in anti-epileptic therapy, anticonvulsants are also used for pain management (e.g., carbamazepine or gabapentin as coanalgesics) or as mood stabilizers in bipolar disorders (valproate).

What is Carbamazepine? #TrustTheExperts
Carbamazepine is an anticonvulsant or anti-epileptic medicine, also prescribed for peripheral neuropathy (nerve pain caused by diabetes) and trigeminal neuralgia (facial nerve pain). However, it is not a simple analgesic and must not be used for trivial aches.
Carbamazepine works by reducing abnormal electrical brain activity or abnormal nerve impulses. It is available as regular tablets, chewable tablets, extended-release tablets (Tegretol), extended-release capsules (Equetro), suspensions, and suppositories. The extended-release dosage forms help in the treatment of manic disorders, including Bipolar I disorder. The medicine is available only on prescription.

CARBAMAZEPINE belongs to a group of medicines called anticonvulsants or anti-epileptics used to treat epilepsy (fits) and trigeminal neuralgia (pain in the face's nerves). Epilepsy is a neurological disorder in which there is a sudden rush of electric impulses (electric activity) in the brain. As a result, the brain's electrical rhythms become imbalanced, resulting in recurrent episodes of seizures or fits. Trigeminal neuralgia is a condition which affects the trigeminal nerve that carries sensations from the face to the brain.
CARBAMAZEPINE contains 'Carbamazepine' that reduces the electrical impulses and subsequent firing of the nerve impulses that cause fits. Thus, CARBAMAZEPINE decreases the excessive and abnormal nerve activity in the brain, thereby controlling seizures.
Side Effects of CARBAMAZEPINE
Dizziness
Tiredness
Uncontrolled movements
Nausea
Headache
Changes in liver enzymes
Low white blood cells count
Minor skin reactions

Carbamazepine is an anticonvulsant medication.
Carbamazepine is used in epilepsy to prevent grand mal and partial seizures. It is also used to treat nerve damage due to diabetes, manic depression, as well as trigeminal neuralgia, which is a condition where sufferers feel an intense stabbing pain in the face.
Each individual's dosage of Gericarb SR will vary depending on their condition and reaction to the drug. The following is a general dosage guide to Gericarb SR.
* For epilepsy the regular starting dose is 100-200 mg once or twice daily. This dose will gradually be increased or decreased to control your fits.
The usual maintenance dose is 400mg - 600mg morning and evening.
* For trigeminal neuralgia the usual starting dose is between 100 mg and 400 mg a day. This dose can slowly be increased to treat the pain. In some cases, up to 1600 mg.
When the pain goes away, your doctor will reduce the dose. After a few weeks, if the pain does not return, he may stop treatment.
* In the prevention of mood swings the usual starting dose is 100-400 mg daily in divided doses.
This dose can be increased slowly until symptoms are controlled. In a few cases up to 1600 mg daily.
The usual daily dose is 400 mg-600 mg.

The side effects of tegretol will be different for everyone. Tegretol was the one of the first anticonvulsants that I was put on during my teenage years. The side effects of tegretol were subtle to me. I didn't notice how much slower I became or how much drowsier I was compared to other people my age because the doctors increased my dosage so slowly. The side effects of tegretol can range from depression to weight gain or drowsiness. I didn't experience weight gain, but I did experience the side effects of tegretol that include depression and drowsiness. Your experience will be different and based on how healthy your body is functioning, you may or may not experience these side effects of tegretol.
Tegretol's side effects can be countered by a healthier lifestyle so that there isn't so much stress and strain on the body as you put more toxins in it. You can eliminate some of these toxins through a few clay bath detoxes, a change of diet and exercise. This will help your body in dealing with tegretol's side effects.
