Meningitis (infection of the membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord) and skin and abdominal (stomach area) infections brought on by bacteria are treated in adults and children 3 months of age and older with meropenem injections. Meropenem injection belongs to the category of drugs known as antibiotics. It functions by eradicating the infection-causing germs.
Colds, the flu, and other viral diseases cannot be treated with antibiotics like meropenem injection. Antibiotic use that is not necessary raises the likelihood of developing a later infection that is resistant to antibiotic treatment.

Lesson on Carbapenem Antibiotics. Carbapenem antibiotics all have the suffix -penem. Carbapenems are always used parenterally and have a very broad spectrum of activity, especially with gram negative bacteria. Carbapenems have a similar mechanism of action to the penicillins and have a variety of side effects associated with their use.

Meropenem+vaborbactam
Meropenem+vaborbactam is a powerful antibiotic combining meropenem, a carbapenem, with vaborbactam, a novel non-β-lactam β-lactamase inhibitor. It is used to treat infections caused by certain strains of carbapenem-resistant Enterobacterales, Acinetobacter baumannii and Pseudomonas aeruginosa [2]. Vaborbactam protects meropenem from degradation by targeting and inactivating certain serine β-lactamases (Ambler class B).
This medication is considered a Reserve antibiotic, meaning it is reserved for specific situations as a last resort due to the risk of emerging resistance. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends reserving this antibiotic for targeted treatment of severe infections caused by laboratory-confirmed Klebsiella pneumoniae carbapenemase-producing Enterobacterales. It could also be considered for severe complicated urinary tract infections, intra-abdominal infections, and hospital-acquired pneumonia when other options are unsuitable. Empiric use, where the specific pathogen is unknown, is only recommended in very select cases of seriously ill patients, such as those with sepsis or septic shock, where a multidrug-resistant pathogen is suspected.
Meropenem+vaborbactam exhibits activity against a wide range of bacteria, including Gram-positive aerobic bacteria, Gram-negative aerobic bacteria, and anaerobic bacteria. Importantly, vaborbactam boosts meropenem's effectiveness against many multidrug-resistant Gram-negative bacteria by inhibiting ESBLs, AmpC beta-lactamases, and Klebsiella pneumoniae carbapenemases. However, it is crucial to understand that it is not effective against bacteria producing metallo-beta-lactamases (NDM, VIM, IMP) or Ambler class D carbapenemases like OXA-48.
The standard adult dosage is 4g (2g meropenem + 2g vaborbactam) administered intravenously every 8 hours. Importantly, this medication is currently not licensed for use in children or neonates.
While generally well-tolerated, with side effects similar to meropenem alone, meropenem+vaborbactam is notably less harmful to the kidneys compared to other antibiotics used for similar infections.
This information is sourced from the AWaRe antibiotics book by the World Health Organization. For further details, please refer to: https://iris.who.int/bitstream..../handle/10665/365135

Meropenem: Drug to Treat Meningitis, Pneumonia, Sepsis and Other Bacterial Infections
https://www.medindia.net/docto....rs/drug_information/
Meropenem belongs to a class of medications called carbapenem antibiotics.
Meropenem is prescribed for treating bacterial meningitis, complicated skin and structure infections, intra-abdominal infections, complicated appendicitis, peritonitis, nosocomial pneumonia or hospital acquired infections, complicated urinary tract infections, and intra and post-partum infections.
Meropenem is highly active against Pseudomonas aeruginosa but inactive against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus and Enterococcus faecium.
Meropenem is stable against the renal enzyme and therefore cilastatin, a specific renal enzyme inhibitor need not be administered with the medication.

MEMANTINA NO TRATAMENTO DA DOENÇA DE ALZHEIMER
CURSO CUIDANDO DA MEMÓRIA – APRENDA AS ESTRATÉGIAS PARA CUIDAR MELHOR DO SEU FAMILIAR QUE TEM A DOENÇA DE ALZHEIMER
https://cuidandodamemoria.com.....br/estrategiascompor

March 21, 2019, was a dark day at the Cleveland Clinic Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health.
That was the day early data showed a promising drug to fight Alzheimer’s dementia wasn’t meeting expectations and was essentially dropped from further research and development.
That was then.
This is now.

Drug Cards Daily | Episode #58: memantine (Namenda) ...AGAIN?! | Dementia Associated to Alzheimer’s Disease
Well it was bound to happen eventually. After recording & editing episode 58 it was brought to my attention that memantine was already covered back in episode 19! I guess here is the new version? Sorry everybody.
EPISODE #19 Summary: Memantine is a NMDA antagonist that goes by the brand name Namenda. There are also titration packs available in the name brand. Memantine treats but does not cure confusion and dementia associated with Alzheimer's disease. There are multiple dosage forms being a capsule, solution, and tablet. Special considerations are for patients with renal and hepatic impairment. Memantine does appear to have higher exposure in women than men. Memantine is proposed to work on the glutamate receptor blocking the receptor much like magnesium does under “normal” conditions. This drug has a long elimination half-life between 60-80 hours. The main side effects are weight gain, abdominal pain, constipation, diarrhea and vomiting. A serious side effect is Stevens Johnson Syndrome. Two main types of drugs that interact with Namenda are alkalinizing agents and carbonic anhydrase inhibitors. The drug can be taken with or without food and if a dose is missed it should not be doubled on the next dose. The missed dose should be skipped and resumed regularly.
