Levothyroxine is a medicine used to treat an underactive thyroid gland (hypothyroidism) which affects 1 in 70 women and 1 in 1,000 men in the UK.
The thyroid gland makes thyroid hormone which helps to control energy levels and growth. Levothyroxine is taken to replace the missing thyroid hormone.
KEY FACTS:
• Levothyroxine starts working straight away, but it may be several weeks before your symptoms start to improve.
• The most common side effects of levothyroxine are caused by taking a bigger dose than you need. Your doctor can lower your dose to help reduce any side effects.
• Before you start taking levothyroxine, your healthcare professional will do a blood test to see what dose you need. Once you start taking the medicine you'll have regular blood tests to see how well it’s working.
HOW AND WHEN TO TAKE:
• Unless told otherwise by your prescriber or healthcare professional take levothyroxine once a day in the morning, ideally at least 30-60 minutes before having breakfast or a drink containing caffeine like tea or coffee.
• Both breakfast and caffeinated drinks can stop your body taking in levothyroxine properly so it doesn't work as well.
• If you can't take it first thing in the morning on an empty stomach take levothyroxine at least 2 hours after eating food.
• If you buy any medicines, check with a pharmacist that they are safe to take with levothyroxine. Levothyroxine should not be taken at the same time as indigestion remedies or preparations containing calcium or iron (which are contained in some vitamin products). These types of medicines reduce the amount of levothyroxine absorbed by your body. Leave at least 2-4 hours between taking your dose of levothyroxine and any such preparation.
• Soya interferes with thyroxine absorption, therefore if you are taking thyroxine you should try to avoid soya. If you wish to take soya, there should be as long a time interval as possible between eating the soya and taking the thyroxine.
• Avoid products such as kelp, as they may interfere with thyroid function & wellbeing. Kelp is derived from seaweed and is naturally high in iodine. Because of this it is sometimes marketed as a "thyroid booster" and can be purchased in dry preparations and tablets. As with iodine itself, it is of no health benefit to those with thyroid disease.
• Levothyroxine medication interactions link - https://bnf.nice.org.uk/intera....ction/levothyroxine. (THIS LINK ONLY WORKS IF YOU LIVE IN THE UK.
-Here's an alternative, pop in all your medicines and check for specific interactions- https://www.drugs.com/drug_interactions.html
BLOOD TESTS:
Your healthcare professional will do regular blood tests to check the levels of thyroid hormones in your body before and after starting levothyroxine. These will allow your doctor to adjust your dose to suit you.
At the start of treatment you can expect to have blood tests often. Once your hormone levels are stable, you’ll usually have a blood test after 4 to 6 months, and after that once a year.
You may need blood tests more often if you:
• Are pregnant
• Start or stop a medicine that can interfere with levothyroxine
• Have any symptoms that could mean your dose is not quite right
MISSED DOSES:
If you forget to take a dose, take it as soon as you remember, unless it's almost time for your next dose. In which case just skip the forgotten dose. Do not take 2 doses together to make up for a missed dose.
If you forget doses often, it may help to set an alarm to remind you. You could also ask your pharmacist for advice on other ways to help you remember to take your medicine.

0:00 Introduction: Synthroid® for hypothyroidism
0:20 Side effects of Synthroid
1:02 Understanding common treatments for hypothyroidism
6:33 Learn more about what causes thyroid problems!
Let's talk about hypothyroidism and how it's typically treated.
Treating hypothyroidism with medications like Synthroid can create a dependency on the drug.
A potential side effect of taking Synthroid long-term, especially if a person is post-menopausal, is an increased risk of bone loss.
The thyroid produces more than one hormone, but people are typically treated with only one hormone. So, what about the other hormones?
You need these hormones—they are important for a healthy body. A lack of these essential hormones can lead to various symptoms, like bone loss.
You may want to talk to your doctor about Armour® Thyroid. Armour Thyroid comes from a natural source and contains more than one thyroid hormone.

Thanks for watching! I hope this helps you better understand common treatments for hypothyroidism. I’ll see you in the next video.
Why Tirosint beats levothyroxine for treating low thyroid in hypothyroid and low thyroid patients.
Levothyroxine is one of the most commonly prescribed medications to treat low thyroid conditions in the United States and around the world.
Unfortunately, it isn't the best medication for the job!
In fact, if you are reading this then you probably know what I am talking about. Are you taking levothyroxine and still dealing with issues such as brain fog, weight gain, constipation, hair loss, etc.?
If so, you may be one of the many thyroid patients out there who simply don't respond well to levothyroxine.
Does this mean hope is lost? No!
This is where Tirosint steps in.
Tirosint is VERY similar to levothyroxine in that it contains the same ACTIVE ingredients but it differs in its inactive ingredients.
This small distinction makes a huge difference in how it can make you feel.
Let's talk about 3 reasons why I think that Tirosint is far superior to levothyroxine:
#1. It's cleaner
Tirosint only has 3 inactive ingredients and 1 active ingredient (thyroxine). You can compare this to levothyroxine which contains many different inactive ingredients, dyes, and fillers. These dyes and fillers can cause a lot of problems for certain people.
#2. It's absorbed easier compared to levothyroxine.
Some studies even show that you can safely take Tirosint with food and STILL absorb it without any issue.
The fewer inactive ingredients found in Tirosint mean it's easier for it to get into your body.
#3. It's easier to take.
Because it's in a gel cap (it's liquid-based) it is not only easier for your gut to absorb it, it can also be taken via the sublingual route.
Taking your thyroid medication sublingually increases absorption and helps you feel better.
In addition, it can also potentially be taken with food which may work better for many people with tight schedules.
Are you taking Tirosint? If so, leave your experience below!

Changing the time of day that to take your thyroid medication can improve its effectiveness and reduce your thyroid symptoms. If you are like most thyroid patients then you are probably taking your thyroid medication first thing in the morning.
But what if I told you there's nothing magical about this time of day? While that's the standard advice, there are emerging data that suggests that not only are other times of day an option, but they also might be better.
One study followed patients who took their thyroid medication in the morning and then at night and evaluated their thyroid lab tests both times. They found that patients taking their thyroid medication in the evening had higher levels of free thyroid hormones compared to those taking it in the morning.
Does this mean you should take your medication at night? Not necessarily, but it may be worth considering.
The biggest potential downside to taking your medication at night is that it may interfere with your sleep. This isn't actually a problem for MOST people but it can be a problem for some. If taking your thyroid medication in the evening does cause sleeping issues then the benefits of taking it at that time likely do not outweigh the consequences of decreased sleep quality.
But, no problem, you can always go back to taking it in the morning.
This strategy has the potential to work with ALL thyroid medications, including those with T3. But note that T3-containing medications are more likely than T3-containing medications to cause sleep issues (but only slightly).

The most commonly prescribed drug in the U.S. may also be one of the most overprescribed for older individuals. Up to 15 percent of the senior population receives levothyroxine, a medication used to treat low thyroid hormone levels. However, a study published this spring in the New England Journal of Medicine reported that patients with slightly low, or subclinical, thyroid hormone levels received no benefit from the drug.
Mayo Clinic endocrinologist Dr. Juan Brito says, while some people genuinely need the hormone replacement to regulate metabolism and ward off health risks, most people taking it do not. Dr. Brito says each prescription should be accompanied by thorough follow-up care. "What is important is to engage the patient and the doctor, and make sure they have a reason to [take] it and a plan – what to do if symptoms don't get better and what to do if the symptoms do get better." Dennis Douda reports.

Cytomel is a T3 only thyroid medication (the brand version of liothyronine) that is far more active than levothyroxine. Because it's so much more active, it also happens to be much better at helping thyroid patients with Hashimoto's and hypothyroidism lose weight.
Before you run out and grab it, though, or try to switch medications, there are a few things you need to know.
When using it you will want to keep an eye on certain lab tests including free t3, total t3, and reverse T3.
In addition, you will also want to keep an eye on your basal body temperature and resting heart rate.
Because of its power, it's important to keep an eye on these metrics to make sure you don't accidentally take too much.
As far as dosing for weight loss is concerned, most patients do best taking a dose somewhere between 5 and 20 mcg per day.
Instead of thinking as Cytomel as an alternative to levothyroxine, I think it's best thought of as a complementary option to it.
Many thyroid patients see the best results when using both of these thyroid medications together.
In addition, combining them with T2 will yield even better results. You can learn more about T2 and how it helps with weight loss here: https://youtu.be/2cL641utwn4?si=Q0h0JUDqAUOK8uld

Levothyroxine is a medication commonly used to treat hypothyroidism, a condition in which the thyroid gland does not produce enough hormones. This medication replaces or provides more thyroid hormones, which are necessary for normal growth and metabolism. Although levothyroxine is generally well-tolerated, it can cause certain side effects including stomach issues, hair loss, heart palpitations, tremors and more.
In this video, Dr. Anshul Gupts talks about the most common side effects of Levothyroxine. He explores the reasons for it and also provides natural alternatives for Levothyroxine. Please check with your primary care physician before making any changes to your medication.

In this video Doctor O'Donovan explains key facts you need to know about a medication called LEVOTHYROXINE (also known as Synthroid®, Levoxyl®, Unithyroid®, Tirosint® in the United States and Euthyrox® and Eltroxin in Europe) and how it is used to treat symptoms of HYPOTHYROIDISM (an under-active thyroid).
In the video we cover:
00:00 - Intro
00:46 - What is Levothyroxine?
01:11 - Who can and can't take it?
01:54 - How and when to take it
03:01 - What to do if you miss a dose
03:40 - Side effects of levothyroxine
04:55 - Pregnancy and breastfeeding
05:23 - Interactions of levothyroxine with other medications
Key facts from the NHS website:
*Levothyroxine is a synthetic version of a hormone called thyroxine. It replaces thyroxine if your thyroid gland cannot produce it and prevents the symptoms of hypothyroidism.
*Levothyroxine starts working straight away, but it may be several weeks before your symptoms start to improve.
*The most common side effects of levothyroxine are caused by taking a bigger dose than you need. Your doctor can lower your dose to help reduce any side effects.
*Before you start taking levothyroxine, your doctor will do a blood test. *Once you start taking the medicine you'll have regular blood tests to see how well it's working.
*Levothyroxine doses need to be carefully monitored during pregnancy. If you're planning to become pregnant or think you may be pregnant, it's important to talk to your doctor to get the right care for you and your baby.

Levaquin Tendonitis is NOT regular tendonitis. The Levaquin antibiotic, a member of the fluoroquinolone class of antibiotics (along with Cipro, Avelox, Levofloxacin, etc) attack a person's connective tissue structures and can even cause DNA damage. If you are suffering from Levaquin side effects, you MUST educate yourself about how Levaquin works and how to give your body it's best chance at being able to recover.

Montelukast (Singulair) is an oral medication used for allergies. It's also used for the long-term treatment of asthma and prevention of exercise-induced asthma. This medication can't be used for a sudden asthma attack, since it takes a longer time to work compared to some inhalers. It's usually an add-on treatment for asthma that might be hard to control.

Montelukast is an orally dosed drug that is FDA Approved for treating asthma and exercise-induced bronchoconstriction. It is also used for allergic rhinitis.
Montelukast is one of the most prescribed drugs in the united states.
Montelukast is mainly used as a complementary therapy in adults in addition to inhaled corticosteroids, if inhaled steroids alone do not bring the desired effect.
Best Time for intake of Montelukast for asthma is in the evening.
For Prophylaxis of exercise-induced bronchoconstriction, montelukast should be administered at least 2 hours before initiating exercise.
For patients with allergic rhinitis, the dose may be taken in the morning or the evening.
Recommended doses are 10 mg for patients aged 15 years and older and 5 mg for patients aged six to 14 years.
Montelukast Generally is not First Line treatment of asthma, but it can be used as
Effective initial preventer therapy for children with mild asthma.
It is also indicated in the prophylaxis of asthma in which the predominant component is exercise-induced bronchospasm.
Mechanism of action:
Montelukast works as a leukotriene receptor antagonist, leukotriene D4 in the lungs, resulting in decreased inflammation and relaxation smooth muscle.
Side effects:
Common side effects include: abdominal pain, cough and headache.
Severe side effects are rare, but may include: allergic reaction, and anaphylaxis very rare.
Rare (may affect up to 1 in 10,000 people taking montelukast), but serious side effects include, Neuropsychiatric reactions, behavioral changes: anxiousness, dream abnormalities and hallucinations, depression, irritability, restlessness, and tremor. angioedema, erythema multiforme, and liver problems.
Use in pregnancy appears to be safe.
Montelukast has very few drug-drug interactions. But it inhibits enzyme CYP2C8 and can affect drugs which are metabolized by this enzyme.
Absorption: Montelukast is quickly absorbed following oral administration. After the 10 mg film-coated tablet is administered to fasted adults, the mean peak montelukast plasma concentration (C max) is achieved in 3 to 4 hours (T max). The mean oral bioavailability is 64%. A standard meal does not influence the oral bioavailability.
Elimination: Montelukast and metabolites are excreted almost singly via the bile. The pharmacokinetics of montelukast is linear for doses up to 50 mg.
Montelukast is contraindicated in patients with a history of hypersensitivity to the drug or its components. In addition, for patients with phenylketonuria (PKU), caution should be exercised with phenylalanine-containing formulations.
Montelukast is available under the following different brand names: Singulair.
