Levetiracetam is a medication that treats seizures by depressing the central nervous system. This may cause drowsiness, which is an expected side effect that resolves after taking the drug for 4 - 6 weeks. A more severe side effect is a rash that can evolve into the life-threatening Stevens-Johnson syndrome, so any sign of a rash should be reported to the physician. In most commodity markets, increasing competition drives the price of resources down to the benefit of consumers, but in the pharmaceutical market for MS drugs, something insidious is happening. In 1993, the first MS disease modifying therapy came onto the market (Betaseron©), but now there are twenty-two FDA-approved drugs. Despite this plethora of options from several manufacturers, the prices are climbing rapidly toward an absurd $100,000 per year.
