Fatal Side Effects

Lung cancer expert Dr. Joseph Leach of Allina Health Cancer Institute shares an overview of the side effects that may be associated with immunotherapy for lung cancer. He explains that some people experience very few side effects, while others have more serious complications and discusses some examples. It is important to let your doctor know right away about any side effects you experience. Your doctor can help you get them under control quickly.
Keytruda, the cancer drug used to treat the melanoma that had spread to former President Jimmy Carter’s brain, is already approved as a second-line cancer therapy, but a new study is showing it is effective as a first-line treatment. Dr. Natalie Azar tells TODAY that study participants on Keytruda were doing so well that doctors ended the trial early because it would be unethical not to give all the patients the drug.

Keytruda, Immunotherapy Drug That Aided Jimmy Carter’s Cancer, ‘A Huge Deal’ | TODAY
Immunotherapy can cause certain side effects, however, these will depend on the type of immunotherapy treatment you are being given. Fortunately, many of the side effects of immunotherapy can be managed well. Dr Mark Tuthill, a leading medical oncologist, explains further.
Make an appointment online with Dr Tuthill: https://www.topdoctors.co.uk/doctor/mark-tuthill
Results from the phase 3 randomized, open-label KEYNOTE-204 trial suggests that Keytruda (pembrolizumab) is superior to Adcetris (brentuximab vedotin) in patients with relapsed or refractory classic Hodgkin lymphoma. Moreover, the results showed manageable side effects and toxicity, according to Dr. John Kuruvilla.
Kuruvilla, from the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre in Toronto, spoke with CURE®’s sister publication, CancerNetwork®, to discuss the noted side effects seen in the study and what clinicians and patients need to know about this treatment.
Transcription:
With the drugs, there is certainly lots of experience in routine clinical use, so we didn't see anything particularly new or surprising, but because the drugs work with different mechanisms we saw differential toxicity.
So, with brentuximab the common things that you see are things like peripheral neuropathy, largely improving or self-limited when the drug is held, or the dose reduced. With pembrolizumab we saw a lot of the immune-related adverse events that are fairly common for these types of drugs, they're fairly minor, things like hyper-thyroids and those sorts of things that are fairly common create grade 1 or 2 toxicities.
The one thing a lot of clinicians and patients need to know a little bit about is pneumonitis and so this was seen in about 10% of the patients who used Keytruda. IT was grade 3 or 4 in a little over 5% of patients who received the drug. Again, thankfully no patient-related deaths were seen in patients with these types of toxicities.
It could be successfully managed with steroids in the majority of patients, so it's important toxicity to highlight but certainly did not limit the effectiveness of the drug.

If you or your loved one is interested in immunotherapy, it is important to know about the possible side effects of immunotherapy treatments. Immunotherapy side effects are generally different from the side effects of other cancer treatments, like chemotherapy or radiation therapy. Some immunotherapy side effects may occur right away. Others may not occur for days, weeks, or months after treatment. Every cancer patient receiving immunotherapy should talk to their doctor about possible side effects. Watch this 10 minute guide to learn more. This is the second guide in the Immunotherapy eLearning series.

Keytruda is a prescription medication used to treat certain cancers, including lung cancer, breast cancer, Hodgkin lymphoma, and many more.

It is a type of immunotherapy that helps the immune system detect and fight cancer cells.
Depending on the stage and type of cancer, it can be used alone or with chemotherapy, radiotherapy, or surgery.
Keytruda works by blocking a protein called PD-1 on the surface of certain immune cells called T cells. Once PD-1 is blocked, the T cells are more able to find and kill cancer cells.
This medicine is given as a slow infusion into a vein over 30 minutes and is usually given every 3 to 6 weeks.
The most common side effects when used alone are tiredness, muscle and joint pain, rash, diarrhea, fever, cough, reduced appetite, itchy skin, difficulty breathing, constipation, pain, abdominal pain, nausea, and hypothyroidism.
These side effects can occur in 20% or more of patients.
This is not a complete list of side effects, and others may occur.

Ketorol-DT Tablet belongs to a group of medicines called Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAID) indicated for the short-term management of moderate to severe acute postoperative pain. Pain is a symptom triggered by the nervous system, which causes uncomfortable sensations in the body.
Ketorol-DT Tablet contains 'ketorolac tromethamine', which works by inhibiting the synthesis of certain chemical messengers in the body, such as prostaglandins which are responsible for causing pain and inflammation. Thereby, Ketorol-DT Tablet helps provide relief from pain.
In some cases, you may experience common side effects such as nausea, vomiting, stomach upset, diarrhoea, constipation, gas, and dizziness. Most of these side effects do not require medical attention and will resolve gradually over time. However, you are advised to talk to your doctor if the side effects persist or worsen.

Toradol - The Best Pain Medication? | NFL Pain Management Treatment
Toradol referred to as Vitamin T by NFL athletes, is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory (NSAIDs) pain medication similar but more potent than aspirin and ibuprofen. Toradol is routinely used by National Football League NFL players as a nonopioid pain management option. But Toradol has many side effects, such as stroke, heart attack, kidney failure, gastrointestinal ulcers, and excessive bleeding.
Toradol is still used daily in operating rooms and hospitals all over the US after surgery and minor procedures. It is a very popular medication in anesthesia because it has no addictive properties or respiratory problems and is just as potent as morphine.

Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs or NSAIDs are drugs with analgesic, antipyretic and anti-inflammatory effects .i.e. reducing pain, fever and inflammation.
The most common traditional NSAIDs include:
· Aspirin
· Ibuprofen (Motrin, Advil, Motrin IB)
· Naproxen (Naprosyn, Aleve)
· Nabumetone (Relafen)
There are three main categories of NSAIDs, which include:
· salicylates
· traditional NSAIDs
· COX-2 selective inhibitors
How do they work?
NSAIDs work by preventing an enzyme from performing its function. An enzyme is a protein that triggers changes in the body. The enzyme, known as COX (cyclooxygenase) has two forms, COX- 1 and COX-2.
COX-1 protects the stomach lining from harsh acids and digestive chemicals; it also helps maintain kidney function. Meanwhile, COX-2 is produced when joints are injured or inflamed.
Since traditional NSAIDs block the actions of both, COX-1 and COX-2, the chances of stomach disorders and bleeding really increase.
