Fatal Side Effects
Understanding the Common Side Effects of Irbesartan (sold under the brand name: Avapro, which is registered trademark),
Welcome to our educational video by Dr. Lukasz Kiljanek, a Board Certified Nephrologist, Hypertension Specialist, and Internal Medicine physician.
Irbesartan a widely prescribed medication for high blood pressure (hypertension), heart failure or kidney disease. While it is highly effective, it's important to be aware of potential side effects. In this video, we'll discuss common side effects.
Cough: Some people might experience a persistent dry cough while taking Irbesartan. If you develop a cough, let your healthcare provider know. There are other medications that provide almost the same benefits as Irbesartan but may not cause a cough.
Dizziness: Dizziness can happen, especially if your blood pressure lowers too much or if you are dehydrated.
High Potassium level: Irbesartan can cause your potassium levels to become high. Your healthcare provider will likely monitor your potassium levels, usually 3-4 weeks after starting Irbesartan or increasing the dose of Irbesartan to make sure potassium stays within a safe range.
Increased creatinine level: Creatinine level can go up, and this sometimes indicates that the medication is actually working. Blood work will be needed to monitor creatinine levels to ensure it remains within safe ranges, usually 3-4 weeks after starting Irbesartan or increasing the dose of Irbesartan.
Always notify your healthcare provider if you develop any side effects or have any concerns or questions about your medication. They can provide the best advice and support for your specific situation.

Tissue biomarkers for response to anti-TNF therapy across rheumatoid arthritis and inflammatory bowel disease (the TAURUS study)
Anti-TNF therapy is the most commonly used first line biologic medication in inflammatory bowel disease. For every 10 patients that take an anti-TNF medication, only around 6-7 patients benefit from it. At the moment we don’t know why this medication works in some patients but not in others. Advances in technology allow us to look at the role of individual cells in disease in greater detail than ever before. The TAURUS study aims to sample tissue from the bowel in patients receiving adalimumab (also known as Humira) before and after treatment. By doing this we will be able to look at the changes made by this treatment at the most fundamental level. To find out what impact adalimumab has on IBD symptoms and the quality of life of patients, we have also incorporated Truecolours, an online symptom tracking system into the study. By comparing changes to the bowel tissue before and after treatment, we aim to understand the biological pathways that are involved in persistent disease, which can help target new drug treatments. We also plan to look at whether there are clues in the bowel tissue prior to treatment that could tell us whether anti-TNF therapy would be of benefit in certain patients compared to others.

This video explains how certain proteins cause inflammation in the intestines.
REMICADE® (infliximab) helps to control the symptoms of moderately to severely active Crohn's disease in people who haven't responded well to other therapies.
The immune system normally protects the body from unwanted and dangerous invaders, such as disease-causing bacteria. In people with Crohn’s disease, the immune system attacks the GI tract and releases a protein called TNF-alpha, resulting in inflammation and the symptoms of Crohn’s disease. Scientists believe that REMICADE® works by binding to and blocking TNF-alpha.
Only you and your doctor can decide if treatment with REMICADE® is right for you. REMICADE® can cause serious side effects, such as lowering your ability to fight infections. Some patients, especially those 65 years and older, have had serious infections caused by viruses, fungi or bacteria that have spread throughout the body, including tuberculosis (TB) and histoplasmosis. Some of these infections have been fatal. Your doctor should monitor you closely for signs and symptoms of TB during treatment with REMICADE®.

Infliximab is a type of medicine called a monoclonal antibody. It works by suppressing part of the immune system and modifying the process of inflammation.
Infliximab is used to treat multiple forms of arthritis, as well as plaque psoriasis, Crohn’s disease, and active ulcerative colitis.
Monoclonal antibodies are manufactured antibodies that are specifically designed to recognise and bind to unique proteins in the body. Infliximab works by binding to and preventing the activity of a specific protein produced by the body, called tumour necrosis factor alpha. This protein is involved in producing inflammation. It controls the activity of other inflammatory chemicals.
By preventing the activity of this protein inflammation is decreased.

Do NSAIDs Help With Gout Pain? In this informative video, we'll discuss the role of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) in managing gout pain. Gout is a painful form of arthritis that can cause sudden and intense discomfort, particularly in the big toe. NSAIDs are often a go-to option for alleviating this pain during acute gout attacks. We will cover how these medications work to reduce inflammation and ease discomfort, along with some commonly prescribed NSAIDs like ibuprofen and indomethacin.
We will also address the benefits of NSAIDs, including their effectiveness and accessibility for immediate relief. However, it is equally important to consider the potential risks and side effects associated with their use. This video will highlight the gastrointestinal issues that may arise from long-term or high-dose NSAID use, as well as the need for caution in individuals with certain health conditions.
For those who may not tolerate NSAIDs, we will briefly touch on alternative treatment options, such as colchicine and systemic glucocorticoids. Lifestyle changes can also play a role in managing gout, and we will touch on some helpful tips.

Is Indomethacin An Anti-inflammatory? In this informative video, we will discuss Indomethacin, a medication commonly used to manage pain and inflammation in orthopedic conditions. We will explain how Indomethacin functions as an anti-inflammatory drug and its role in treating various musculoskeletal issues. You'll learn about its mechanism of action, specifically how it inhibits the synthesis of prostaglandins, which are responsible for causing inflammation and pain.
We will also highlight the specific applications of Indomethacin in orthopedic practice, including its use in preventing heterotopic ossification after total hip arthroplasty. Understanding the potential side effects associated with Indomethacin is essential, as we will cover the risks involved, particularly for individuals with existing health conditions.
Additionally, we will compare Indomethacin to other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, providing clarity on its effectiveness relative to similar medications. If you're considering Indomethacin for pain management or have questions about its use, we encourage you to consult with a healthcare professional to ensure it aligns with your treatment needs.
