Fatal Side Effects
Study this Typical Antipsychotics NCLEX mnemonic and other mnemonics with Pixorize.
Typical antipsychotics are a class of drugs that include haloperidol and fluphenazine. As their name suggests, the typical antipsychotics are used to treat psychosis and psychotic disorders like schizophrenia, as well as dangerous agitation and aggression. Side effects include extrapyramidal symptoms, abbreviated EPS, neuroleptic malignant syndrome, abbreviated NMS, drowsiness or sedation, anticholinergic effects, and a prolonged QT interval that puts the patient at risk for torsade de pointes.

A bula do haldol decanoato

✅ Sintomas extrapiramidais (tremores, rigidez muscular)
✅ Sedação e sonolência durante o tratamento
✅ Alterações no movimento (parkinsonismo medicamentoso)

Watch more How to Understand Schizophrenia videos: http://www.howcast.com/videos/....512799-Side-Effects-
Anti-psychotic medications are very useful and have helped many people with schizophrenia to lead healthy and productive lives by taking care of some of the symptoms, including delusions, hallucinations, disorganized thinking, disorganized behavior, and negative symptoms, or lack of motivation that may come with schizophrenia. However, they don't come without side effects. I'm going to talk with you about four different categories of side effects that seem to be very common.
One is what we call extrapyramidal symptoms. Those are motor or movement side effects of these medications. The older anti-psychotics tend to have more of these side effects. They include feeling stiff in your muscles, having tremor in your hands or in your body, feeling restless and unable to sit still, or having what we call tardive dyskynesia. That occurs over time, where you might have movements of your mouth or of your limbs that are repetitive and that appear after a period of treatment. Those are the extrapyramidal symptoms, or EPS. They're more common with the older medications.
With the newer medications, the more common side effects tend to be what we call the metabolic side effects, or cardiometabolic side effects. Those include weight gain, an increased blood sugar or risk for diabetes, and an increased cholesterol. Initially, we were really excited about all of the new anti-psychotic medications.
Then, when we saw how people gained weight and got more heart disease, partly related to the medications, we started to see that there was a big risk there, because really, it's heart disease and diabetes that tend to be the things that lead to early mortality in people with schizophrenia. So, that's the second category of side effects.
There's also anticholinergic side effects. Those include dry mouth, feeling flushed or hot, having constipation. Those are things that tend to happen with the anticholinergic side effects. Different medications, both old and new, have more or less anticholinergic side effects.
One last category that I'll mention is prolactin. Prolactin is a body hormone that you have. For some of our anti-psychotic medications, in particular Risperidone, is probably the biggest culprit, increase prolactin production. What happens, then, is that women especially may not have their periods, they may have difficulty conceiving a child. And, for some people, there's breast enlargement and even lactation, both men and women. That can be a very disruptive side effect, obviously, and needs to be addressed.
If you have side effects with anti-psychotic medications, definitely, there's many choices of anti-psychotic medication, and so you should speak with your doctor or psychiatrist about it, because they can try different things to see what works best for you and causes the least burden of side effects to you. Many people have no side effects at all from anti-psychotic medications, thank goodness. If you have schizophrenia and you're thinking about medications, find a treatment provider you trust so you can work on finding the right medication for you.
I get a lot of questions about the risks and side effects associated with antipsychotic medications. These medications are no longer used exclusively in schizophrenia, and they are now widely accepted as treatment for bipolar disorder, adjunctive therapy for depression, and even severe anxiety disorders resistant to other medications.

Is Haldol Neurotoxic?
Haloperidol is one of the most widely-used of the older "first-generation" antipsychotic medications. Some have suggested that it's a neurotoxin and should be taken off the market. But a lot of the evidence behind this claim isn't strong at all. In fact, many of the cited studies actually show that haloperidol is safe for nerve cells -- even at concentrations much higher than would ever occur in clinical practice.
In this lecture, I critique a review article that concludes that haloperidol is neurotoxic. I go through each of the cited studies and reveal how thin the evidence actually is.
I also can't help but notice that -- of all the antipsychotic medications one could focus on -- only haloperidol is singled out for this degree of scrutiny. And (I believe) it's more than just a coincidence that it's the only member of the first-generation class of medications that competes economically with the most expensive modern medicines. So I discuss in this talk the potential conflicts of interest behind the scenes of the haloperidol neurotoxicity issue.
This lecture was given at the June 9, 2020 meeting of the SZconsult learning community. Check out SZconsult.org for more information.
SZconsult is a free consultation + education service offered by Northeast Ohio Medical University. It's open to any clinician who wants to learn more about schizophrenia-spectrum illness, or who wants to tap into the collective wisdom of the learning community to find answers to clinical problems.

In this video, I discuss what my experience has been like with taking antipsychotic medications for my schizoaffective disorder. I talk about it in relation to symptom management, side effects, and psychological implications. Every antipsychotic interacts differently with each individual, so this is just a broad overview of my own experiences with a multitude of different antipsychotics (none are named because they affect each individual differently).
It is so important to work toward finding a balance between adequate symptom management and adverse side effects with your treating psychiatrist. Be honest with them about any concerns you may have and be open to working with them to find the best fit for you.

What Are The Side Effects Of Haloperidol? In this informative video, we will discuss the side effects associated with Haloperidol, a medication commonly prescribed for managing symptoms of schizophrenia. Haloperidol is a first-generation antipsychotic that helps alleviate issues such as hallucinations and delusions by blocking dopamine receptors in the brain. However, it’s essential to be aware of the potential side effects that may arise from its use.
We will cover both common and serious side effects, helping you understand what to expect if you or a loved one is prescribed this medication. From drowsiness and dizziness to more severe conditions like movement disorders and neuroleptic malignant syndrome, we aim to provide a comprehensive overview. Knowing these effects can aid in making informed decisions about treatment and management.

This is Dr. Liz and I'm here today to talk to you about Haldol. So what is Haldol? That is the old antipsychotic that everyone thinks of when they think of One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. And it does have some risks and problems. Let's discuss its usage and its risks:
1. It stays in the body for a long time, and it can make people look like zombies.
2. It has a 2% increase in stroke risk, and a
3. 1% increase in Sudden Death risk, and really shouldn't be used for long-term use.
However, if people are delirious, if they're really aggressive, and paranoid, or what we call psychotic, it may be helpful on an emergent basis.
It can be given by injection or by tablet, or by just liquid.
You have to be careful though, you have to watch your loved one.
Rarely, it can make elders with dementia, more restless when they take it. So if they've been given the Haldol for the paranoia, but then they become restless and they're moving nonstop - that's not the dementia getting worse: That's from the Haldol.
So talk to your doctor. And if things aren't quite going the way you think they should. We're here.

In this video, we explore the use of alpha-2 agonists in the treatment of ADHD, specifically focusing on guanfacine ER (Intuniv) and clonidine ER (Kapvay). These non-stimulant ADHD medications have become viable options for patients who may not tolerate stimulants or have comorbid conditions that make stimulant medications less effective or problematic.
Approved for use in children and adolescents, guanfacine ER and clonidine ER are key players in the realm of ADHD treatment, offering an alternative to traditional stimulant-based therapies. While stimulants remain the first line of treatment for ADHD due to their strong efficacy, these alpha-2 agonists offer a unique approach by working on norepinephrine pathways in the brain. Unlike stimulants, which increase norepinephrine levels, alpha agonists ADHD medications like guanfacine and clonidine work by modulating norepinephrine signaling, which can help improve attention and behavior in ADHD patients.
When comparing guanfacine ADHD and clonidine ADHD treatments, it is important to note that while both are effective, they each have distinct characteristics. Guanfacine tends to be less sedating, making it a preferable option for some patients, especially adults with ADHD. Studies show that guanfacine for ADHD in adults can improve symptoms over time, though the effects build more gradually compared to stimulants. On the other hand, clonidine for ADHD is often used when there are comorbid conditions like tics, sleep disturbances, or anxiety, as it has additional calming effects.
A key consideration in choosing between guanfacine vs clonidine is their side effect profiles. Guanfacine side effects can include fatigue, dry mouth, and potential interactions with other medications, while clonidine side effects may involve sedation, low blood pressure, and dizziness. Despite these challenges, both medications offer significant benefits, particularly for patients who struggle with stimulant-induced side effects like anxiety, insomnia, or increased heart rate.
The pharmacology of guanfacine and clonidine provides insight into how these medications work in the brain. Alpha-2 agonists strengthen norepinephrine signaling in the prefrontal cortex, which plays a crucial role in regulating attention, impulse control, and behavior. This mechanism makes them particularly effective for patients who do not respond well to traditional stimulant medications.
When considering ADHD non-stimulant options, it's important to weigh the effectiveness of clonidine and guanfacine. Both have been shown to provide modest improvements in ADHD symptoms, but the clonidine and guanfacine comparison reveals subtle differences in their usage. Clonidine is often chosen for patients with additional psychiatric or sleep disorders, while guanfacine is favored for its more tolerable side effect profile in long-term use.
In conclusion, alpha agonists like guanfacine and clonidine play an essential role in the expanding landscape of ADHD treatment. Although they may not be as immediately effective as stimulants, they offer a valuable option for managing ADHD symptoms, particularly in patients who experience side effects from stimulant medications or have coexisting conditions. For individuals seeking non-stimulant ADHD medications, these alpha-2 agonists provide a viable alternative, with guanfacine standing out for adult patients and clonidine being beneficial for younger patients or those with additional challenges like tics or anxiety. Understanding the side effects and benefits of both medications is crucial in optimizing treatment for ADHD and improving patient outcomes.
