➡️ Gout Diet - Do gout medications have any side effects?
- Gout medications are well tolerated by most people. However, like other medications, they have potential side effects.
- Allopurinol is well tolerated by most people, but in some people, it can cause an allergic rash. Very severe rashes rarely can occur after taking allopurinol, and any allergic type rashes that develop while a patient is taking allopurinol are taken seriously.
- Colchicine (Colcrys) can cause signs and symptoms such as nausea, diarrhea, and rarely muscle weakness and abnormal blood counts.
- Probenecid is generally well tolerated but should not be used in patients who have uric acid kidney stones, as it can worsen the kidney stones and potentially harm the kidneys in these patients.
- Febuxostat (Uloric) can cause liver abnormalities, nausea, and rash.
- NSAIDs can cause irritation of the stomach and ulcers in some cases. The liver and the kidneys are periodically monitored in patients taking NSAIDs over the long term.
- Krystexxa is administered as an intravenous infusion. Severe allergic reactions have been reported in a minority of people receiving Krystexxa.

In this video, Diana Bytyqi discusses an important class of antidiabetic medications called SGLT2 inhibitors. This class consists of Jardiance, Farxiga, Invokana, and Steglatro.
This is becoming a very popular class of medications, not only because they reduce hba1c by nearly 1-1.5%, however, they are shown to be an effective class of medications for the protection of the heart and kidneys.
We are now seeing nephrologists and cardiologists recommending this class, Jardiance in particular, for both renal protection and for the reduction of congestive heart failure admissions and reducing cardiac death by nearly 43% in diabetic patients.
Although not indicated for weight loss, this class is associated with some weight loss. Hypoglycemia (low blood sugar levels) are very uncommon with this medication given in the mechanism in which the medication works.
SGLT2 inhibitors work with the kidneys to get rid of the extra sugar in the bloodstream. Hence, it is important to drink plenty of fluid to replenish water loss through excessive urination.
Because of the sugar in the urine, yeast infections are more common, especially in women. Therefore, we recommend regular hygiene after each restroom use such as the use of water or wet wipe to get rid of the sugar.

AstraZeneca’s Farxiga (dapagliflozin) has recently been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as a treatment for chronic kidney disease (CKD) in patients at risk of progression with and without type-2 diabetes.
This approval is the most remarkable advancement in the treatment of chronic kidney disease in over 20 years. During the DAPA-CKD Phase III trial, the oral drug Farxiga showcased an amazing reduction in the risk of declining renal function, end-stage kidney disease, and cardiovascular or renal death in CKD patients.
Farxiga is the most recently FDA-approved kidney disease treatment that can help tackle many complications that come with kidney disease. Farxiga was originally approved in 2014 to improve glycemic control in adults with type 2 diabetes in addition to diet and exercise. These oral tablets, once-daily sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors, went under review in January 2021.
The ground-breaking approval news came in after a successful DAPA-CKD Phase III trial. The numbers from this trial showed many kidney disease sufferers the light at the end of the tunnel.
During this trial, 4304 patients were randomly assigned to receive either Farxiga or a placebo. By the end of the study, the researchers concluded a 39% reduction in the risk of declining renal function, cardiovascular death, as compared to a placebo in stage 2 to 4 CKD patients with high urinary albumin excretion. AstraZeneca’s Farxiga showed an overall 31% reduction in the risk of death versus placebo.

Famotidine is a medication commonly used to treat conditions related to excess stomach acid, such as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), peptic ulcers, and Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. It works by reducing the amount of acid the stomach produces, providing relief from symptoms like heartburn, indigestion, and stomach pain. Famotidine belongs to a class of drugs known as H2 blockers, which block histamine receptors in the stomach lining. It is available over-the-counter for short-term relief of heartburn and as a prescription for more serious conditions.

Study this H2 Blockers (Cimetidine, Ranitidine, Famotidine, Nizatidine) mnemonic and other mnemonics with Pixorize.
H2 receptor blockers or H2 antagonists are drugs that block the action of histamine at H2 receptors in the stomach. This drug class includes cimetidine, ranitidine, and famotidine. Blocking histamine at H2 receptors notably decreases stomach acid production, which can be used to treat acid-mediated disorders like peptic ulcer disease and gastroesophageal reflux disease. Importantly, the drug cimetidine has a few notable side effects. Cimetidine is a powerful CYP enzyme inhibitor that can lead to various drug interactions. Cimetidine also has anti-androgenic effects, which can lead to gynecomastia.
