Experts are warning of the possible side effects of popular diabetes medications such as Ozempic and Mounjaro when used for weight loss. https://tinyurl.com/2pd3jvm6

RELATED: What is RSV? Here's what we know about RSV vaccines and drugs. https://youtu.be/iMbLLCp0bEw

A diabetes medication in short supply for the last two years often was prescribed to people who didn't have the disease, and prescribing rates varied dramatically across the country, new data shows.

In a recent study, Trilliant Health estimated prescription rate increases for Ozempic, a drug approved for diabetes in 2017. Its popularity exploded in mid-2021 after Wegovy, a higher dose of the same underlying medication, was approved for weight loss.

This medicine lowers blood sugar by helping the pancreas make more insulin, lowering the amount of sugar your liver makes, and slowing the rate food passes through your body, making you feel full longer.

It does this by activating the two receptors, GIP and GLP-1, which are natural incretin hormones that help regulate blood sugar levels.

Mounjaro injection became an FDA-approved medicine on May 13, 2022, to improve blood sugar (glucose) levels in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus when used together with diet and exercise.

Common side effects include nausea, diarrhea, decreased appetite, vomiting, constipation, dyspepsia, and abdominal pain, which affects 5% or more patients.

Medications that cause erectile dysfunction #erectiledysfunction
Medications that cause erectile dysfunction #erectiledysfunction Side Effects 3 Views • 5 months ago

Erectile dysfunction can have many causes, but one that is often overlooked is medications and their side effects on sexual function. Here are just a few prescription drugs that are known to have negative sexual side effects for men like decreased libido, erectile difficulties, ejaculation problems, priapism (prolonged erection without arousal) and painful ejaculation.

- Cardiovascular drugs like diuretics such as hydrochlorothiazide and beta blockers such as Metoprolol which impact sexual desire and erections
- Benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH) medications like Terazosin, Tamsulosin, and Finasteride. Terazosin can contribute to low desire, difficulty with erections, ejaculation problems and pain with ejaculation. Tamsulosin is also commonly known as Flomax. Flomax has also been shown to cause retrograde ejaculation because it relaxes the smooth muscles in the prostate and bladder neck. In addition to being prescribed for BPH, Finasteride is also prescribed for male pattern hair loss which can cause impotence, decreased libido, and decreased volume of ejaculate
- Lipid lowering drugs like Simvastatin can cause erectile difficulties
- Antidepressant and antipsychotic medications impact sexual desire, erections, ejaculation and may cause painful ejaculation
- Sleep and anti anxiety medications impact sexual desire and erections
- These medications will probably surprise you, Prilosec and Zantac which are drugs that treat acid reflux and heartburn
- Another one that might shock you is Non-steroidal anti-inflammatories like Aleve, Advil, Aspirin.

Drug effects on sexuality are complex and it is just one part of the picture. Side effects of medication are unique to each individual so don’t go messing around with your doses or stop taking medications without consulting with your medical provider and a local pharmacist first. If you think medications might be fiddling around with your sex life, I encourage you to have a chat with the doctor who prescribed the medication or with a doctor with specializes in sexual medicine.

Generic name: Tamsulosin.
Brand names: Flomax and Omnic.
Available as a modified release tablet or capsule.

How to use it?
- Swallow the capsule or tablet whole with water, without chewing or biting on it. As this can decrease the effectivity. If you have trouble swallowing the capsule, you can open it and take the granules inside of the capsule without chewing on them.
In addition, it is preferable to take this drug after a meal, at a fixed time. This minimize the chance that you forget to take it.

When to use it?
Tamsulosin can cause relaxation of the muscles in the prostate, urethra and in the muscles surround blood vessels. This can improve urine flow and it may lower your blood pressure.
Therefore Tamsulosin is mostly used to treat:
- Lower urinary tract symptoms related to an enlarged prostate.
- And it can help to discharge of kidney stones in both men and women.

What is the correct dosage?
The precise dose will depend on your specific indication of use, the side effect you might experience and the severity of your symptoms. Therefore always use the precise amount and frequency your doctor prescribed you.

- However, when treating peeing problems in men with an enlarged prostate or when prescribed to discharge kidney stones, your doctor will usually prescribe a dose of 0,4mg 1x per day.

What are the side-effects?
- Common (1-10%): dizziness and ejaculation problems.
- Uncommon (0.1-1%): hypersensitivity reactions (rash, itching), low blood pressure, palpitations, headache, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation and rhinitis.
- Rare (0.01-0.1%): severe allergic reactions and fainting.
- Very rare (0.01%): prolonged erection and Stevens-Johnson syndrome.

Safety:
First of all, the first days of use tamsulosin can cause dizziness. If you experience this, please do not drive as this could be dangerous.
Furthermore, combining tamsulosin with alcohol, can increase its side effects. So take proper care when doing so.
In addition, tamsulosin can have interactions with other drugs your are taking. always discuss this with your prescribing doctor.

Treating Urinary Symptoms with Cialis | Mark Scholz, MD | PCRI
Treating Urinary Symptoms with Cialis | Mark Scholz, MD | PCRI Side Effects 2 Views • 5 months ago

The benign enlargement of the prostate gland is common in men as they age and it sometimes causes lower urinary-tract symptoms. There is a panoply of options, medicinal and surgical, for treating BPH to alleviate these symptoms, but not every medication or surgical option works in every person's case, and most of the options have the potential to cause side effects. One benefit of the medicinal options is that the side effects are typically reversible. Here, medical oncologist Mark Scholz, MD, discusses the use of Cialis--which is popularly known for treating erectile dysfunction but has been getting attention for its potential to treat BPH in some men--as a relatively innocuous option for men to try if they are experiencing these symptoms.

0:06 What are the first steps you take when treating a patient with urinary symptoms from BPH?

0:50 What are the side effects are Cialis

1:19 How long does it take for Cialis to improve urinary flow, if the medication is going to be effective?

3:12 Is Viagra a good alternative to Cialis for the purpose of treating BPH-related urinary symptoms?
