Prednisone is a corticosteroid anti-inflammatory medication that is used to treat a wide variety of medical conditions. Although it can be beneficial in treating certain conditions, it is important to be aware of the risks associated with using Prednisone, such as weight gain, moon face, Cushing syndrome, and high blood pressure. Additionally, lower to moderate doses taken over an extended period of time can lead to depression and an increased risk of cardiovascular disease. To reduce potential side effects, it is best to limit the dose to the lowest amount necessary and to take it for the shortest period of time possible.

STEROIDS EXPLAINED! What Steroids ACTUALLY Do to Your Body | Doctor ER
STEROIDS EXPLAINED! What Steroids ACTUALLY Do to Your Body | Doctor ER Side Effects 0 Views • 2 months ago

STEROIDS EXPLAINED! What Steroids ACTUALLY Do to Your Body | Doctor ER. Doctor ER Jordan Wagner is back to give a steroids overview: corticosteroids vs anabolic steroids, steroids before and after, steroids side effects, steroids bodybuilding, testosterone, and more. Doctor Wagner, a real life emergency physician explains everything you need to know about steroid use, what happens when you take steroids, steroid abuse, and the consequences of taking steroids.

Steroids are chemicals, often hormones, that your body makes naturally. They help your organs, tissues, and cells do their jobs. You need a healthy balance of them to grow and even to make babies. Steroids can also refer to man-made medicines. The two main types are corticosteroids and anabolic-androgenic steroids (or anabolics for short). Corticosteroids are a class of drugs that lowers inflammation in the body. Anabolic steroids are synthetic steroid hormones that resemble testosterone in promoting muscle growth. These hormones are used medicinally to treat some forms of weight loss and illegally used by some sports athletes (aka performance-enhancing drugs also referred to as juicing). Corticosteroids work to reduce immune system activity. Because corticosteroids ease swelling, itching, redness, and allergic reactions, doctors often prescribe them to help treat diseases such as asthma or arthritis.

From Joe Rogan, The Rock, to Arnold Schwarzenegger, steroids have been abused by some of the world's most popular celebrities and athletes. However, it's important to understand that you can still build muscle without injecting steroids. Let Doctor Jordan Wagner know in the comments some of the healthy and natural ways you like to build muscle in the gym. Do you have a favorite supplement stack you swear by?

This video discusses the effects and side effects of prednisone, a glucocorticoid used to treat autoimmune diseases and inflammation. It highlights the drug's potential for causing muscle breakdown, bone loss, and significant physical changes like "moon face" and "buffalo hump." Prednisone can also lead to metabolic issues, mood changes, and increased infection risk due to immune suppression. The importance of tapering off the medication gradually is emphasized, it’s advisable to download your own "Prednisone Checklist" as a tool to help manage side effects.

Key Takeaways:
1. Prednisone's Classification and Effects: Prednisone is a catabolic glucocorticoid steroid, distinct from anabolic steroids, and is used to treat autoimmune diseases and inflammation. It can lead to muscle breakdown and bone loss, potentially causing conditions like sarcopenia and osteoporosis.
2. Physical and Metabolic Changes: The drug can cause significant physical changes, such as "moon face" and "buffalo hump," due to fat and water redistribution. It also affects metabolic processes, increasing the risk of diabetes, heart disease, and significant weight gain, often described as a "watermelon" appearance.
3. Mood and Sleep Disturbances: Prednisone can cause mood changes, including euphoria, anxiety, depression, and insomnia. These side effects can be distressing and may persist over time.
4. Immune Suppression and Stress Response: While prednisone suppresses the immune system to reduce inflammation, it also increases the risk of infections. It disrupts the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, impairing the body's stress response.
5. Importance of Tapering and Management: It is crucial to taper off prednisone gradually to allow the adrenal system to recover. “Prednisone Checklist” is a tool designed to help manage side effects, providing strategies for prevention and management, and can be shared with healthcare providers and family members.

1:35 Natural steroid protocol

In this video, I want to tell you about a potential alternative protocol for steroids. The side effects of things like prednisone, cortisone, steroids, anti-inflammatories, or anything related to the synthetic form of cortisol can have a lot of side effects.

Many people have inflammatory conditions. When a person takes a synthetic form of cortisol, over time, it can work less and less to the point where it doesn’t work anymore.

Cortisol is made by your adrenal cortex. Cortisol is the natural anti-inflammatory in the body. It suppresses the immune system.

To make cortisol, you need the cofactor vitamin B5, and vitamin C. Vitamin D can also help cortisol work better. If you have cortisol resistance, vitamin D may help reset that.

A natural potential steroid protocol for a severe inflammatory reaction:
1. Vitamin B5 — 500mg
2. Vitamin C (buffered and non-GMO) — 1000mg
3. Vitamin D3 — 10,000 IUs

A. You may want to take this combination every 15 minutes for 2 hours.
B. Then, take this combination every 2 hours for the rest of the day.
C. After that, if needed, take the protocol twice a day.

This protocol is meant to help naturally calm things down as you do things to correct the situation like getting on the keto and intermittent fasting plan.

SARMs | Steroid-Like Gains Without The Side Effects of Steroids?
SARMs | Steroid-Like Gains Without The Side Effects of Steroids? Side Effects 1 Views • 2 months ago

We all want MORE GAINS overnight and it looks like SARMs could be the "legal" answer for many of us. But at the end of the day did we find a miracle drug to build more muscle faster? Or are SARMs just another shortcut to more gains with high risks of terrible side effects?

https://muscularstrength.com/a....rticle/SARMs-Steroid

In a world that is evidently becoming less “natty” by the minute, it has come to my attention that people are constantly looking for NEW shortcuts for gains, and SARMS are starting to be the next big thing. In fact, word on the street is that SARMs are safe, have virtually no side effects, and most importantly, they’ll get you those GAINS!!!

Well, just like most things, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is! So, let’s take an in-depth, UNBIASED look at SARMs, discuss their benefits and risks, and be sure to stay tuned until the very end, because I will be sharing my own opinion on whether or not I think they’re worth the risk.

What Exactly Are SARMs?
For those of you who don’t know, SARMs are a group of compounds called Selective Androgen Receptor Modulators, and they’re essentially DRUGS that are structurally very similar to anabolic steroids…Which should tell you something!!! But like I said… I will remain unbiased… for now.

As of today, there are quite a few types SARMs on the market, and unlike prohormones, they’re currently legal for over-the-counter purchase. As for research on SARMS, well… it has been very limited so far but it definitely looks promising. They appear to help build muscle & strength, accelerate fat loss and increase overall sports performance to a level comparable to steroids, but without as many side effects. Now, although the majority of studies have been performed on rodents, SARMs are still an interesting subject that merits discussion.

How Do SARMs Work & How Do They Compare To Steroids?
To understand how SARMs work, we first have to briefly look at how hormones function in the human body. Imagine, if you will, hormones are chemical messengers. They help carry messages from cell to cell, successfully establishing communication among them. These messages are usually vital instructions and commands and as they reach their target-cell, the instructions are carried out. Simple, right?

ANDROGENS are hormones that are associated with masculinity. They regulate the development and maintenance of MALE characteristics by binding to androgen receptors in the body, and perhaps the most commonly known androgen is testosterone. When you introduce anabolic steroids like testosterone to your body, with testosterone being a hormone, all of the following three things are going to happen to a different extent:

The testosterone will bind to your cells’ androgen receptors.
It will be converted to DHT (dihydrotestosterone), which also binds to androgen receptors.
Some of it will be converted to the female hormone, estradiol, which is essentially estrogen and binds to your cells’ estrogen receptors.

And here’s the English translation – Introducing steroid-like hormones like testosterone to your system will bring about anabolic, androgenic AND some estrogenic effects. But what you want exclusively the most is the anabolic effects! Those lead to increased muscle protein synthesis which results in more muscle growth and accelerated fat loss. What you don’t want are their androgenic and estrogenic effects. This is because the androgenic part of steroids is responsible for accelerated hair growth, man boobs, acne, and other side affects you probably don’t want.

The other serious concern with steroids is the strong possibility of side effects even in low and controlled dosages. This is why I get so MAD when people say “if you do it right…steroids are safe”. The truth is any side effects can happen at any level of usage, and these side effects may include high blood pressure, progression of heart disease, increased LDL cholesterol, mood swings, hair loss, sexual dysfunction and liver cirrhosis, just to name a few. That’s usually why people ultimately decide steroids are not worth the risk.

The Single WORST Side Effect of Cortisone Shots
The Single WORST Side Effect of Cortisone Shots Side Effects 5 Views • 2 months ago

I reveal the single WORST side effect associated with cortisone shots and corticosteroid injections. We review recent clinical trial data that reveals serious consequences for joints and tendons. Cortisone injections can hinder tissue healing, damage collagen, and increase tissue degradation, which poses a problem for orthopedics. Clinical trials show that the short-term pain reduction effect of cortisone injections is reversed in the intermediate and long terms, leading to tendon damage. The injections can also harm cartilage, worsening conditions like osteoarthritis and potentially requiring joint replacement surgery.

What Happens to Your Body on Steroids?
What Happens to Your Body on Steroids? Side Effects 0 Views • 2 months ago

What happens inside your body when you take steroids? Find out all the benefits and side effects of steroid use. If you're wondering if you do lose muscle when you stop taking steroids or testosterone injections this video will help. Whether you're trying to learn more about anabolic steroids or the effects that large doses of testosterone and sarms have on your body, this video will help.

Steroids can help you build a massive amount of muscle, increase your strength, and drastically speed up your recovery. But they can also come with some serious side effects, especially for many beginners that rush in without knowing what they're doing. So today i want to go over exactly what happens to the human body on steroids based on science. Now before we jump in I want to mention that I don't personally have any first-hand experience with steroids, but I have spent countless hours researching the topic, so I'll do my absolute best to give you a non-bias science-based summary of the effects that steroids have on your body.

Now the first thing you have to know is that not all steroids are the same. The term “steroid” refers to a biologically active organic compound with four rings arranged in a specific molecular configuration. So even a corticosteroid is still considered a steroid since it has this same kind of four ring structure and corticosteroids are considered relatively safe. They're even routinely prescribed by doctors to help lower inflammation in the body, caused by things like swelling due to an injury, allergic reactions, and even asthma. Although many of you already know about corticosteroids, it may surprise you to learn that both cholesterol and estrogen are actually also considered steroids because they have the same four rings, but for the rest of the video when I say steroids I'm referring to the type of steroids that are predominantly used for enhancement purposes known as an anabolic-androgenic steroid. This is a type of steroid that mimics the effects of testosterone in your body.

Normally your testes will produce four to nine milligrams of testosterone per day in an average healthy male. But by taking synthetic testosterone, you'll vastly increase the amount of testosterone that flows through your veins. Your body then treats that exogenous testosterone in the same way as if it were your body's own testosterone. So the testosterone enters your cells and binds to what's known as androgen receptors. From there, it binds to the nucleus of the cell and attaches to DNA. This process activates hundreds of genes involved in stimulating protein synthesis and reducing protein breakdown.

So as a result, your muscles are more likely to stay in a "positive protein turnover rate,” which benefits muscle growth because to build muscle, more protein needs to be built up compared to the amount that gets broken down. And this is how steroids assist with muscle growth, and why they're so popular amongst bodybuilders.

Now aside from improving protein turnover rate anabolic steroids also increase the number of nuclei that are found within muscle cells. Those nuclei, which are actually called myonuclei, happen to be the control center of each muscle. So having more nuclei is beneficial because the number of nuclei you have within a muscle is actually one of the primary factors that determine your potential for growth. To put it simply the more myonuclei, the bigger the muscle can become. (3) And this is actually one reason why some people have better muscle-building genetics because they naturally have more myonuclei, while others don't. (4) You see, the nuclei in your muscle fibers are limited to a maximum region of the cell that they can control. This is an area known as the myonuclear domain. Once the growth of a particular muscle fiber exceeds this domain, the only way to further grow is to add new nuclei to that cell. And that process is called 'myonuclear addition.'

Now the problem is that normally, it takes a lot of time to add new nuclei to a muscle. That’s why you can’t gain 20 pounds in let's say one month. But by taking steroids, you can gain muscle much faster because it significantly increases the speed at which your body can add new nuclei to muscle tissue. And once it's there the new nuclei remain in your muscle tissue for the rest of your life. We can see this play out in studies in which steroids were given to mice. 3 months after stopping the use of steroids, the mice had their muscle mass return to normal, but the extra nuclei stayed there. (5) That’s why taking steroids not only increases muscle mass in the short term, but it can also increase the amount of muscle that you can build and maintain for the rest of your life. So even if someone that once took steroids stopped taking steroids, they would most likely lose some mass, but their muscles would still have a higher...

About IBS Treatment Center
===========================

Dr. Stephen Wangen, co-founder and Medical Director of the IBS Treatment Center, and his staff have successfully helped over 10,000 people resolve irritable bowel syndrome and chronic digestive problems since 2005.

Some patients have had IBS symptoms so severe that they spent a considerable amount of time in the hospital. Others are suffering alone at home and are no less frustrated with the impact that it is having on their lives. The thread that tied them all together was that they had never seen an IBS expert (much different than a gastroenterologist), a doctor whose only mission is to help people solve IBS.

I believe this is one of the most abused drugs on the market. Check out the dangers and side effects of prednisone.

Timestamps
0:00 What is prednisone?
0:35 Prednisone side effects
1:42 How to support your adrenals
3:18 Foods that support the adrenals

In this video, we’re going to talk about the dangers of using prednisone. Prednisone is a synthetic version of cortisol.

Prednisone is used for rheumatoid arthritis, inflammatory conditions, autoimmune diseases, skin issues, and more. I believe this drug is being given out too much, and it has a lot of serious side effects.

Side effects of prednisone:
• Muscle wasting
• Inactive adrenals
• More inflammation
• Diabetes
• Low immune system
• Insomnia
• Cataracts
• Hip fractures
• Liver damage
• Shrinking testes
• Low libido
• Belly fat

In my opinion, once you start taking prednisone, as time goes on, you’re going to need more and more of it. Your adrenals won’t be strong enough, and you'll need to build them back up.

Three things that will support your adrenals:
1. My Adrenal and Cortisol Support supplement
2. NAC
3. Stinging nettle root

Foods that support the adrenals:
1. Dandelion tops
2. Beet tops

Steroids. They’ve caused global scandals. They’re banned in most athletic competitions. Yet the same properties that help elite athletes and bodybuilders improve performance also make steroids valuable for treating many illnesses and injuries, such as AIDS and cancer. So if steroids are used as medicine, they must be safe to use recreationally, right? Anees Bahji explores the effects of steroids.

What is Akathisia?
What is Akathisia? Side Effects 0 Views • 2 months ago

http://missd.co/ ► Akathisia is a drug-induced disorder that can cause severe inner and outer restlessness, suicidal thoughts, violent behaviors, and/or suicide. Many different types of drug classes can cause akathisia including prescription drugs commonly marketed for depression--selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, (SSRIs). Other types of drugs that can cause akathisia include, but are not limited to, drugs prescribed for high blood pressure, acne, asthma, malaria, and infections (antibiotics).

Please see and share this animated educational video that addresses:
What is akathisia?
What causes akathisia?
What can you do if you or a loved one experiences this life-threatening disorder?

Nobody is immune to akathisia. But by increasing awareness of akathisia, sufferers can get help before it's too late. Together, we can save lives.

About MISSD

(The Medication-Induced Suicide Prevention and Education Foundation in Memory of Stewart Dolin) is a unique non-profit organization dedicated to honoring the memory of Stewart and other victims of akathisia by raising awareness and educating the public about the dangers of akathisia. MISSD aims to ensure that people suffering from akathisia's symptoms are accurately diagnosed so that needless deaths are prevented. A website, the creation of educational materials, and support of conferences such as Selling Sickness, will help to raise awareness and knowledge of akathisia and medication-induced suicides. Again, we feel it's important to note that we are not anti-drug, and recognize that prescription drugs can be positive and life-saving for many individuals. We are for truth in disclosure, honesty in reporting, and legitimate drug trials.

What is Akathisia?
What is Akathisia? Side Effects 0 Views • 2 months ago

Akathisia is usually a side effect of antipsychotic drugs. It is a movement disorder that makes it hard to stay still, and causes an urge to move that you can’t control.

I have experienced akathisia quite a number of times and it is truly dreadful. The way I describe it is by equating it somewhat to the feeling you get if you’ve drank way too much coffee. A friend of mine calls this sensation the feeling of “doom” and that absolutely is what akathisia feels like - doom.

Basically what it can feel like is an inner restlessness that makes you want to just jump out of your skin. You may need to fidget all the time, walk around, or do things like crossing and uncrossing your legs.

In this video, I go over symptoms, causes, types, treatments, and prognosis' for akathisia.

Akathisia is defined as :
Subjective complaints of restlessness, often accompanied by observed excessive movements (e.g. fidgety movements of the legs, rocking from foot to foot, pacing, inability to sit or stand still), developing within a few weeks of starting or raising the dosage of a medication (such as a neuroleptic) or after reducing the dosage of a medication used to treat extrapyramidal symptoms.

The pathophysiology of akathisia appears to be complex, involving several neurotransmitters, including dopamine, acetylcholine, y-aminobutyric acid (GABA), norepinephrine, serotonin, and neuropeptides.

The neurotransmitters most specifically linked to akathisia are gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) and serotonin. GABA (mainly via GABAA receptor interactions) exerts an influence on dopamine-dependent signalling, thus, increasing or reducing locomotor activity

One of the critical discussion points is the role of antipsychotic medications in causing Akathisia. We explore how these drugs may lead to this condition and how they differ from SSRIs, which can also induce Akathisia.

Not only does this video address the symptoms and treatments of Akathisia, but it also breaks down the key differences between Restless legs versus Akathisia. Both conditions can cause discomfort and distress, but knowing the distinction can be vital for accurate diagnosis and effective treatment.

Akathisia may result from efforts to compensate for dopaminergic underactivity in the nucleus accumbens
Strategies for management include:
1. Reduce dose
2. Switch to low-risk antipsychotic
3. Adjunctive approaches:
Propranolol 40-80 mg/day
5HT2A receptor antagonists (e.g. mirtazapine 15 mg PO daily, cyproheptadine 8-16 mg PO daily)
Benzodiazepines (e.g. clonazepam 0.5-1 mg PO daily, diazepam 5-15 mg PO daily)
Anticholinergics (e.g. benztropine 1-4 mg PO daily) should be used mainly for patients who have concurrent Parkinsonism
An algorithm is also covered.

Akathisia [Antipsychotic induced movement disorder]
Akathisia [Antipsychotic induced movement disorder] Side Effects 0 Views • 2 months ago

Akathisia [Antipsychotic induced movement disorder]

Akathisia is a neuropsychiatric syndrome that can occur as an adverse effect of antipsychotic medications and manifests as psychomotor restlessness. In recent years, akathisia has additionally been found to occur in certain individuals as an adverse effect of with calcium channel blockers, antiemetics, anti-vertigo drugs, cocaine, and sedatives used in anesthesia. Akathisia is defined as an inability to remain still. It is a neuropsychiatric syndrome that is associated with psychomotor restlessness. The individual with akathisia will generally experience an intense sensation of unease or an inner restlessness that usually involves the lower extremities. This results in a compulsion to move. In most cases the movement is repetitive. The individual may cross, uncross, swing, or shift from one foot to the other. To the observer, this may appear as a persistent fidget.

Akathisia is frequently associated with the use of antipsychotics (neuroleptics), but it can also complicate the use of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). Other causes of akathisia include anxiety disorders, drug withdrawal or discontinuation states, early serotonin syndrome, restless legs syndrome, iron deficiency anemia and endocrinopathies. It is therefore important to find the underlying cause by identifying drug precipitants and associated psychopathology and excluding general medical causes. The pathophysiology of akathisia is not fully understood, but a combination of hypodopaminergic and hyperserotonergic neurotransmission may be implicated. This hypothesis is supported by the emergence of akathisia following the initiation of antipsychotics or SSRIs, but also from the observation that dopamine agonists can alleviate psychomotor agitation associated with restless legs syndrome

Akathisia can have a significant negative impact on quality of life and is associated with increased suicidality. Treatment of this distressing condition is difficult and treatment options are limited.

Antipsychotic-induced akathisia may be managed by reducing the dose of the offending agent or switching to an alternative antipsychotic agent. Beta-blockers such as propranolol and benzodiazepines have historically been used for the treatment of akathisia although the amount of high-quality data supporting their use is limited. Anticholinergic agents such as benztropine may be utilized if concomitant pseudoparkinsonism is present. Mirtazapine may also be utilized for the management of akathisia. Low-dose mirtazapine has been found to be as effective as beta-blockers and may be considered first-line therapy.

When using beta-blockers, clinicians should be aware of the risk of bradycardia and hypotension. Many other agents, including vitamin B6, have been used to treat akathisia, but there are no randomized controlled trials to determine their efficacy

Unfortunately, once akathisia has developed it can take months for the disorder to subside. Case reports exist indicating that this movement disorder also increases the risk of suicidality. Hence, all patients with akathisia need to be closely monitored and the family should be educated about the impact of akathisia

Dystonia, Akathisia, Parkinsonism, and Tardive Dyskinesia - Antipsychotics Side Effects
Dystonia, Akathisia, Parkinsonism, and Tardive Dyskinesia - Antipsychotics Side Effects Side Effects 0 Views • 2 months ago

Dystonia is a neurological movement disorder characterized by involuntary muscle contractions that cause repetitive or twisting movements and abnormal postures. These muscle contractions can be sustained or intermittent and may result in painful, awkward, or distorted movements. The condition can affect any part of the body and can range from mild to severe.

Dystonia is caused by a dysfunction in the brain's basal ganglia, which is responsible for coordinating muscle contractions. It can be classified into several types based on the affected body part or the underlying cause. Some common types of dystonia include:

1. Generalized Dystonia: This type affects multiple body parts and can lead to twisting and contorting movements that involve the limbs, trunk, and sometimes the neck and face.

2. Focal Dystonia: This type is confined to a specific body part. Examples include cervical dystonia (affecting the neck muscles, also known as spasmodic torticollis), blepharospasm (involving the eyelids), and writer's cramp (affecting the hand and forearm muscles).

3. Segmental Dystonia: In this type, adjacent body parts are affected. For instance, cranial-cervical dystonia involves the head and neck.

4. Hemidystonia: Only one side of the body is affected in this type, leading to abnormal movements and postures on that side.

5. Dystonia-plus Syndromes: These are conditions where dystonia is a prominent feature along with other neurological symptoms. Examples include Dopa-Responsive Dystonia (DRD) and Paroxysmal Nonkinesigenic Dyskinesia (PNKD).

6. Secondary Dystonia: Dystonia can also be caused by underlying factors such as brain injury, certain medications, infections, or other neurological conditions. This is known as secondary dystonia.

The exact cause of primary dystonia (dystonia without an underlying cause) is often unknown. However, genetic factors are believed to play a role in its development. Certain gene mutations have been associated with various forms of primary dystonia.

While there is no cure for dystonia, treatment options are available to manage its symptoms and improve the quality of life for individuals affected by the condition. Treatment approaches may include:

- Botulinum Toxin Injections: Botulinum toxin, commonly known as Botox, is injected into specific muscles to temporarily paralyze them and reduce abnormal movements.
- Oral Medications: Medications like anticholinergics, muscle relaxants, and dopamine-modulating drugs can help manage symptoms in some cases.
- Physical Therapy: Exercises and stretching routines can help improve muscle flexibility and coordination.
- Surgery: In severe cases where other treatments are ineffective, surgical procedures like deep brain stimulation (DBS) may be considered. DBS involves implanting electrodes into specific areas of the brain to modulate abnormal brain activity.

If you suspect you or someone you know is experiencing symptoms of dystonia, it's important to consult a medical professional, ideally a neurologist, for a proper diagnosis and treatment recommendations tailored to the individual's needs.

WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN TRAZODONE DEPENDENCE VS. ADDICTION?
WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN TRAZODONE DEPENDENCE VS. ADDICTION? Side Effects 1 Views • 2 months ago

Trazodone is a tetracyclic antidepressant medication that acts on serotonin levels in the brain to regulate moods. It can also be prescribed for insomnia and sleep disorders.

Serotonin is a naturally occurring chemical in the brain that serves to moderate moods, attention, appetite, and energy levels. It changes the chemical makeup of the brain and can boost moods, which can make a candidate for abuse.

Trazodone is not typically considered to be habit-forming when used as directed, but recreational use of the medication can lead to drug dependence and potential addiction. Stopping trazodone suddenly, or “cold turkey,” after dependence is formed can lead to difficult withdrawal symptoms, which can make it hard to stop taking the drug without medical intervention and professional help.

Trazodone addiction is often managed with the aid of medications, therapies, and supportive treatment methods.

Why Do You Need to Taper Off Trazodone?
Trazodone is classed as a SARI antidepressant (serotonin antagonist reuptake inhibitor). Trazodone is solely approved to be prescribed for depression but is more frequently used off-label for a wide range of other uses. It is concerning that all antidepressants (including trazodone) carry a black box warning for heightened risk of suicide.

SARI drugs are thought to block serotonin from adhering to 5-HT2 receptors. However, trazodone at low doses acts as a serotonin agonist (mimics serotonin) and only becomes a serotonin antagonist (blocks serotonin) at high doses. Low doses of trazodone are typically prescribed for insomnia, and higher doses are typically used in the treatment of depression. After neurochemical expression, serotonin would normally be broken down and recycled. Blocking the reabsorption of neurochemicals causes these suspended molecules to eventually degrade and become useless waste products. As with all antidepressant agents that are serotonergic, a deficit in vital levels of serotonin will often result, leading to worsening depression over time. SARI drugs such as trazodone are also thought to alter or block dopamine, histamine, acetylcholine, norepinephrine, and other neurochemicals, and disrupt the normal distribution of these natural neurochemicals in the brain and along the nerve channels of the CNS.6
The Alternative to Meds Center specializes in providing the types of treatment that are designed to help a person transition to a drug-free and symptom-free daily life. Trazodone is frequently prescribed off-label to treat insomnia, OCD, anxiety disorders, pain, bulimia, and even to mitigate the side effects of other medications. That is a partial list of off-label uses for trazodone. Trazodone is only FDA-approved for the treatment of depression.
According to a 2017 study on the effects of antidepressants for treating insomnia, the results showed that while trazodone was more effective than some other antidepressants at improving sleep, it may lead to other problems such as oversedation, REM sleep behavior disorder, and others.
At lower doses, Trazodone acts as a hypnotic, and at higher doses, as an antidepressant by blocking the serotonin pathway. As noted on the FDA label, Trazodone has been given a black box suicide warning and can also induce the potentially lethal condition called serotonin syndrome, so these risks can be quite dangerous. As far as other drugs that may be recommended as “alternative choices,” they have just as high a risk of being ineffective and causing adverse or unwanted side effects. Some doctors who are not aware of better alternatives may even suggest electroconvulsive therapy. There are safer trazodone alternatives that do not carry such risks to address each person’s unique profile and the symptoms they wish to be rid of with a customized holistic trazodone tapering and alternatives program that can achieve maximum relief of symptoms, without side effects from the treatment.

Be prepared, and ready to seek medical help if the drug you were prescribed isn’t helping, or if your symptoms are worsening.
ATMC is committed to discovering the medical, psychological, and biophysical reasons why a person is struggling with depression, anxiety, or an inability to sleep. Our program includes lab tests, which inform how best to help normalize neurochemistry through natural substances, as well as shedding the lifetime accumulation of toxins to enable neurochemistry rehabilitation.
