Psychiatric Side Effects from Trazodone
Trazodone is often prescribed as a treatment for insomnia. It works well for many people who take it. Two uncommon but potentially serious side effects from trazodone are mania and psychosis.
It's important to know that trazodone has the potential to cause these types of side effects. Otherwise, patients might be incorrectly diagnosed with new illnesses and given additional medicines that they don't need.
It's also important to be aware of trazodone's potential for serious psychiatric side effects because such side effects might be more likely to emerge when it's given to people whose nervous systems might be more vulnerable because of neurological or psychiatric illness.
This lecture was given at the January 19, 2021 meeting of the SZconsult learning community.
SZconsult is a free consultation + education service offered by Northeast Ohio Medical University. It’s open to any clinician who wants to learn more about schizophrenia-spectrum illness, or who wants to tap into the collective wisdom of the learning community to find answers to clinical problems.

-------------------------------------------------------------------
Summary:
1) Swelling in the Ankles and Feet
Amlodipine can cause edema which is swelling in the ankles, feet, or hands. This side effect occurs because amlodipine relaxes and widens the blood vessels, which can cause fluid to accumulate in the lower extremities. This affects about 10 percent or more patients taking amlodipine.
2) Dizziness and Lightheadedness
One of the common side effects of taking amlodipine is dizziness and lightheadedness. These sensations can occur due to a drop in blood pressure caused by the medication. While dizziness and lightheadedness can be concerning, there are several strategies you can try to minimize their impact. Firstly, it's important to remember to get up slowly from a seated or lying position.
3) Headaches
Headaches are a common side effect of taking amlodipine, but they don't have to ruin your day. Headaches which usually goes away within a week of starting amlodipine. Getting enough rest and ensuring that you are well-hydrated may help with headaches or ask your doctor or pharmacist for a pain reliever recommendation.
4) Muscle Cramps
Muscle cramps can be an uncomfortable and painful side effect of taking amlodipine. These cramps, often felt in the legs, occur due to the medication's effect on the smooth muscle tissue in the blood vessels.
While muscle cramps can be bothersome, there are strategies you can try to manage and reduce their frequency.
5) Flushing
Flushing, or a warm sensation in the skin, is another common side effect of amlodipine. It is characterised by a temporal redness, warmth or darkening of the skin. It's usually in the face or neck.
Female are more like to experience these side effects than males

8 Weird and Unexpected Side Effects of Amlodipine (Skin, Gastrointestinal, Psychological).
Are you taking amlodipine? If so, it's important to be aware of some weird or unusual side effects that may occur. While it is generally well-tolerated by most individuals, some unusual or weird side effects can occur. In this video, we will explore 8 of these weird side effects of amlodipine, which can affect the skin, gastrointestinal system, and psychological well-being.
Before we discuss these weird side effects, let’s briefly discuss what amlodipine is and what it does.
Amlodipine, also known as Novask, is a medication commonly prescribed to treat high blood pressure and angina. It belongs to a class of drugs called calcium channel blockers, which work by inhibiting calcium entry into these cells, thereby reducing the contractile force of the arterial walls. This action leads to the dilation of arteries, which decreases peripheral resistance and ultimately lowers the pressure within the vascular system.

Amlodipine is a calcium channel blocker used to treat hypertension and anginal chest pain. It acts to inhibit or “block” the voltage-gated L-type calcium channels, reducing vasoconstriction and promoting vasodilation to lower blood pressure. However, due to this mechanism, amlodipine can cause a wide variety of side effects, which we discuss in this lesson.
