Trazodone remains among the top 25 prescribed drugs in this country. Approved by the FDA only as an antidepressant, it tends to cause intense drowsiness As a consequence it finds widespread acceptance as a treatment for insomnia rather than its authorized indication. However medical studies fail to confirm its benefits as a sleeping pill, and it lacks approval for this purpose anywhere in the world.

The American Academy of Sleep Medicine does not recommend trazodone and the widely respected Cochrane Collaboration suggests it fails to improve sleep efficiency when tested under laboratory conditions. Consumer Reports advises over-the-counter anti-histamines such as Benadryl instead of trazodone.

No established dose exists for sleep problems. While the dose for depression averages 150 mg in divided doses, doctors regularly prescribe 12.5 mg - 50 mg for insomnia with some boosting recommendations to 300 mg at night.

Developed in the 1960s, trazodone quickly developed a negative reputation due to a long list of side effects. Among the most prominent are cardiac arrhythmias, fainting, dangerous falls in blood pressure on arising and either weight gain or loss. Additionally it causes headache, blurred vision, confusion and may lead to cognitive and motor impairment.

A relatively unique and uncomfortable adverse reaction relates to prolonged painful erections or priapism lasting in excess of 6 hours. This tends to occur early in therapy, often within the first month, and at relatively low doses.

Dangerously low serum sodium concentrations may develop. Symptoms range from headache and difficulty concentrating to memory impairment, confusion and unsteadiness. Unless corrected hallucinations, seizures, respiratory arrest and death may supervene.

For those in need of a sleeping pill, prudence suggests an alternative to trazodone.

Trazodone review.
Generic name: trazodone.
Brand names: Desyrel, Desyrel Dividose, Oleptro.
Dosage form: oral tablet (100 mg; 150 mg; 300 mg; 50 mg).
Drug class: Phenylpiperazine antidepressants.

What is trazodone?

Trazodone is an antidepressant that belongs to a group of drugs called serotonin receptor antagonists and reuptake inhibitors (SARIs). While trazodone is not a true member of the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) class of antidepressants, it does still share many properties of the SSRIs.

Trazodone is used to treat major depressive disorder.

It may help to improve your mood, appetite, and energy level as well as decrease anxiety and insomnia related to depression.

Trazodone works by helping to restore the balance of a certain natural chemical (serotonin) in the brain.

How should I take trazodone?

Take trazodone exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Follow all directions on your prescription label and read all medication guides or instruction sheets. Your doctor may occasionally change your dose.

Take trazodone after a meal or a snack.

It may take up to 2 weeks before your symptoms improve. Keep using the medication as directed and tell your doctor if your symptoms do not improve.

You should not stop using this medicine suddenly, or you could have unpleasant symptoms (such as dizziness, vomiting, agitation, sweating, confusion, numbness, tingling, or electric shock feelings). Ask your doctor how to safely stop using this medicine.

Store at room temperature away from moisture, heat, and light.

Dosing information.

Usual Adult Dose for Depression:

Initial dose:
150 mg orally per day in divided doses; this may be increased by 50 mg orally per day every 3 to 4 days.

Maximum dose:
-Inpatients: 600 mg/day.
-Outpatients: 400 mg/day.

Comments:
-Patients should be screened for a personal/family history of bipolar disorder, mania, or hypomania prior to initiating treatment.
-Patients should be monitored for withdrawal symptoms when discontinuing therapy.
-After an adequate response has been reached, dosage may be gradually reduced depending on therapeutic response.
-If drowsiness develops, a major portion of the daily dose may be administered at bedtime or a reduction of dosage may be necessary.
-This drug should be taken shortly after a meal or light snack.

Use: Treatment of major depressive disorder (MDD)

What happens if I miss a dose?

Take the medicine as soon as you can, but skip the missed dose if it is almost time for your next dose. Do not take two doses at one time.

Trazodone side effects.

Get emergency medical help if you have signs of an allergic reaction to trazodone: hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.

Stop taking trazodone and call your doctor at once if you have a penis erection that is painful or lasts 6 hours or longer. This is a medical emergency and could lead to a serious condition that must be corrected with surgery.

Report any new or worsening symptoms to your doctor, such as: mood or behavior changes, anxiety, panic attacks, trouble sleeping, or if you feel impulsive, irritable, agitated, hostile, aggressive, restless, hyperactive (mentally or physically), more depressed, or have thoughts about suicide or hurting yourself.

Call your doctor at once if you have:

fast or pounding heartbeats, fluttering in your chest, shortness of breath, and sudden dizziness (like you might pass out);

slow heartbeats;

unusual thoughts or behavior;

easy bruising, unusual bleeding; or

low levels of sodium in the body - headache, confusion, slurred speech, severe weakness, vomiting, loss of coordination, feeling unsteady.

Seek medical attention right away if you have symptoms of serotonin syndrome, such as: agitation, hallucinations, fever, sweating, shivering, fast heart rate, muscle stiffness, twitching, loss of coordination, nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea.

Common trazodone side effects may include:

drowsiness, dizziness, tiredness;

swelling;

weight loss;

blurred vision;

diarrhea, constipation; or

stuffy nose.

This is not a complete list of side effects and others may occur. Call your doctor for medical advice about side effects.

8 Important Amlodipine Drug Interactions You Should Know About.

8 Important Amlodipine Drug Interactions You Should Know About.

Are you taking amlodipine for high blood pressure or chest pain?
Have you noticed strange swelling, fatigue, or unusual symptoms but never got a clear answer?
And most importantly — has your doctor ever warned you about the long-term risks of this commonly prescribed drug?
If not, you're not alone.
Amlodipine is a prescription medication commonly used to manage high blood pressure (hypertension) and chest pain (angina). It belongs to a class of drugs called calcium channel blockers, which work by relaxing blood vessels and improving blood flow. This helps reduce the workload on the heart and lowers blood pressure, making it an essential treatment for millions of people.
While Amlodipine is highly effective in managing these conditions, it’s important for patients to understand that the medication can interact with other substances, including certain foods, drinks, and medications. These interactions can either increase the risk of side effects or reduce the drug’s effectiveness, which may compromise the treatment of hypertension or angina.
For example, some substances can alter how Amlodipine is processed in the body, potentially leading to too much or too little of the drug in the bloodstream. This imbalance may cause side effects like dizziness, swelling, or an unsafe drop in blood pressure, or it may reduce the medication's ability to keep symptoms under control. Being informed about these interactions allows you to make safer choices and collaborate more effectively with their healthcare providers.
By understanding these potential risks, you can take steps to avoid complications and maintain your overall health while using Amlodipine.

7 Long-term side effects of Amlodipine (Skin, Gastrointestinal, Psychological).

Hi everyone, Welcome to our video on 7 Long-term side effects of amlodipine, Norvasc. We're going to long-term side effects of amlodipine, why they occur and how to reduce these side effects.

Amlodipine is a widely-used medication prescribed primarily to help manage high blood pressure and alleviate chest pain caused by heart-related issues. As part of the class of drugs known as calcium channel blockers, amlodipine functions by relaxing the blood vessels, allowing blood to flow more easily, and thereby reducing the strain on the heart. This makes it an effective tool in the treatment of various cardiovascular conditions, contributing to better heart health and overall well-being.
When taking amlodipine, patients often experience a noticeable improvement in symptoms associated with hypertension and angina, such as reduced chest pain and lower blood pressure readings. These positive outcomes can significantly enhance a patient’s quality of life and help prevent more serious complications like heart attacks or strokes.
However, like all medications, amlodipine is not without its downsides. Over extended periods, the body can react to the medication in ways that produce certain side effects. Understanding these potential long-term side effects and why they occur is crucial for individuals to manage their health proactively. Being aware of these effects helps in making informed decisions and facilitates better communication with your doctor or pharmacist.

⏱️03:34 ► Headaches
⏱️03:57 ► Muscle Cramps
⏱️04:43 ► Flushing
⏱️05:20 ► Conclusion

-------------------------------------------------------------------
Summary:

1) Swelling in the Ankles and Feet
Amlodipine can cause edema which is swelling in the ankles, feet, or hands. This side effect occurs because amlodipine relaxes and widens the blood vessels, which can cause fluid to accumulate in the lower extremities. This affects about 10 percent or more patients taking amlodipine.

2) Dizziness and Lightheadedness
One of the common side effects of taking amlodipine is dizziness and lightheadedness. These sensations can occur due to a drop in blood pressure caused by the medication. While dizziness and lightheadedness can be concerning, there are several strategies you can try to minimize their impact. Firstly, it's important to remember to get up slowly from a seated or lying position.

3) Headaches
Headaches are a common side effect of taking amlodipine, but they don't have to ruin your day. Headaches which usually goes away within a week of starting amlodipine. Getting enough rest and ensuring that you are well-hydrated may help with headaches or ask your doctor or pharmacist for a pain reliever recommendation.

4) Muscle Cramps
Muscle cramps can be an uncomfortable and painful side effect of taking amlodipine. These cramps, often felt in the legs, occur due to the medication's effect on the smooth muscle tissue in the blood vessels.
While muscle cramps can be bothersome, there are strategies you can try to manage and reduce their frequency.

5) Flushing
Flushing, or a warm sensation in the skin, is another common side effect of amlodipine. It is characterised by a temporal redness, warmth or darkening of the skin. It's usually in the face or neck.
Female are more like to experience these side effects than males

8 Weird and Unexpected Side Effects of Amlodipine (Skin, Gastrointestinal, Psychological).

Are you taking amlodipine? If so, it's important to be aware of some weird or unusual side effects that may occur. While it is generally well-tolerated by most individuals, some unusual or weird side effects can occur. In this video, we will explore 8 of these weird side effects of amlodipine, which can affect the skin, gastrointestinal system, and psychological well-being.

Before we discuss these weird side effects, let’s briefly discuss what amlodipine is and what it does.

Amlodipine, also known as Novask, is a medication commonly prescribed to treat high blood pressure and angina. It belongs to a class of drugs called calcium channel blockers, which work by inhibiting calcium entry into these cells, thereby reducing the contractile force of the arterial walls. This action leads to the dilation of arteries, which decreases peripheral resistance and ultimately lowers the pressure within the vascular system.

Amlodipine is a calcium channel blocker used to treat hypertension and anginal chest pain. It acts to inhibit or “block” the voltage-gated L-type calcium channels, reducing vasoconstriction and promoting vasodilation to lower blood pressure. However, due to this mechanism, amlodipine can cause a wide variety of side effects, which we discuss in this lesson.

Amlodipine Side Effects & How to Avoid || Amlodipine Adverse Effects / Norvasc side effects || Common side effects of Amlodipine

Amlodipine is a calcium channel blocker. That means it affects the movement of calcium into the cells of the heart and blood vessels. This way it widens the blood vessels and lowers blood pressure. Therefore it is used in hypertension i.e nothing but high blood pressure.

High blood pressure adds to the workload of the heart and arteries. If this continues for a long time, then the heart and arteries may not function properly. This can damage the blood vessels of the brain, heart, and kidneys, which might result in a stroke, heart failure, or kidney failure. So lowering blood pressure can reduce the risk of strokes and heart attacks. And thats when amlodipine comes into the picture for the treatment of hypertension, chest pain and other conditions caused by coronary artery disease.

common side effects of Amlodipine:

Swelling in your feet or ankles
Difficult in breathing
dizziness, lightheadedness
fast, irregular, pounding, or racing heartbeat or pulse
feeling of warmth
redness of the face , neck, arms, and occasionally, upper chest
Chest tightness

How to prevent Amlodipine side effects?

Avoid getting up too fast from a sitting or lying position, or you may feel dizzy. So get up slow and steady to prevent a fall. Otherwise, you can do one thing, First sit for a few moments before standing to prevent the dizziness.

Dizziness, lightheadedness, or fainting may also occur if you exercise or if the weather is hot. Heavy sweating can cause loss of too much water and result in low blood pressure. Take extra care during exercise or hot weather.

Do not suddenly stop using Amlodipine if you have been using this medicine regularly for several weeks. Stopping suddenly may cause chest pain or high blood pressure to come back or get worse. The best way is to check with your doctor and then reduce it gradually before stopping completely.

When you start taking Amlodipine you may get a headache, and that is normal. This headache lasts for a short time in the beginning. This should become less noticeable after you have taken this medicine for a while. If this effect continues, or if the headaches are severe, check with your doctor.

Sometimes you may find that your gum has swelling and the swelling is increasing day by day. In medical term it is called as gingival hyperplasia. If you have this problem then consult your doctor. They may switch you to an alternative medicine.

Some patients may have tenderness, swelling, or bleeding gums soon after starting Amlodipine. So Brush and floss your teeth carefully and regularly. Massaging your gums may help prevent this. See your dentist regularly to have your teeth cleaned.

Also, Do not take any other prescription or nonprescription (over-the-counter) medicines unless they have been discussed with your doctor. As some of this medicine might not be suitable for you or may cause any drug reaction with amlodipine.
