Levothyroxine Ingredients: These May Surprise You
Levothyroxine Ingredients: These May Surprise You Side Effects 2 Views • 5 months ago

Ever wonder what is actually in levothyroxine? This medication is one of the most prescribed medications in the United States and yet so many people have no idea what they are actually consuming every day.

Understanding what's in this medication is important because some of the ingredients may be causing you problems.

When it comes to thyroid medications there are two types of ingredients you should be aware of:

1. Active ingredients
And 2. Inactive ingredients

The active ingredients are usually not the problem for most thyroid patients because this component is dose dependent. You are either taking enough or you aren't.

But this isn't true for the inactive ingredients. These ingredients can cause hypersensitivity reactions regardless of the dose and may lead to a host of symptoms.

The active ingredients found in levothyroxine include: thyroxine.
The inactive ingredients include: magnesium stearate, microcrystalline cellulose, colloidal silicone dioxide, sodium starch glycolate, and color additives depending on the strength and dose you are taking.

If you are not doing well on your thyroid medication then take a look at these ingredients and see if they are causing issues. If they are, you may benefit from switching to a cleaner thyroid medication like Tirosint.

Drug Cards Daily | Episode #1: levothyroxine (Synthroid, Levoxyl) | Treating Hypothyroidism and Thyrotropin-Dependent Cancers

This episode of Drug Cards Daily is on the drug levothyroxine. Levothyroxine has many brand names such as Synthroid, and Tirosint (to name a few) and is used as first-line in hypothyroidism. It is also used in the treatment of thyrotropin-stimulating hormone (TSH) dependent thyroid cancers. The main dosage form is tablets and it comes in a wide variety of strengths commonly dosed in micrograms (mcg). Dosing is individualized with a general standard of either approximately 1-1.6 mcg/kg/day or 50 mcg/day. From there adjustments are made in 12-25 mcg increments every 3-6 weeks until serum TSH and T4 is at a normal range for greater than 5-6 weeks. It is recommended to be taken in the morning 30-60 minutes before food. If needed it can be crushed but levothyroxine should not be administered within 4 hours of calcium or iron containing products.

Synthroid: 5 Reasons it isn't working for you
Synthroid: 5 Reasons it isn't working for you Side Effects 2 Views • 5 months ago

5 big reasons why Synthroid isn't helping you feel better. Synthroid is a VERY common low thyroid medication prescribed to treat hypothyroidism but only works if used correctly.

Are you taking the thyroid medication known as Synthroid? By the way, the information we are about to talk about ALSO applies to levothyroxine!

If so, then you should be aware that there are a number of reasons why this medication may NOT be working for you in your body.

Levothyroxine and Synthroid are some of the most commonly prescribed medications in the United States with levothyroxine making the #1 spot in 2016.

This means that there are a TON of people using these medications.

The problem with that is that most people using them are not actually getting the benefit of the medication for a number of issues.

We are going to talk about 5 REASONS that many people using Synthroid are NOT feeling well (and what you can do about it).

#1. Your dose.

The first, and probably most common, issue is that most people are simply taking an insufficient or low dose. If your dose is too low then you simply won't feel any better. Thyroid medication is used to SUPPLEMENT low levels of thyroid hormone in your body. You MUST be using the right dose if you want to feel better and you are most likely underdosed if you basing your dosing off of your TSH.

#2. Absorption.

It doesn't matter if you are taking Synthroid or levothyroxine if it isn't being absorbed into your body! You can take as much medication as you want but it's ineffective unless it makes it through your intestinal lining. Many gut-related issues such as irritable bowel syndrome, the use of acid blockers, and gut inflammation can LIMIT this absorption.

If you have any of these issues be sure that you take care of them if you want your medication to be effective.

#3. Conversion issues.

Next is something called peripheral thyroid conversion. In order for your Synthroid to work, it MUST be converted into the ACTIVE thyroid hormone known as T3.

What people don't realize is that up to 20% of the population has problems with this conversion process.

#4. The wrong medication.

There are some people in which Synthroid and levothyroxine simply will NOT work. This is because they can't convert the medication or they need a medication with fewer fillers or dyes. Either way, you should understand that Synthroid may not be the answer you are looking for and there are MANY other thyroid medications available.

#5. You're taking it wrong.

Levothyroxine & Hair Loss - 3 CAUSES + HOW TO STOP IT
Levothyroxine & Hair Loss - 3 CAUSES + HOW TO STOP IT Side Effects 4 Views • 5 months ago

Suffering from levothyroxine hair loss? Levothyroxine is KNOWN to cause hair loss in several different ways. If you are taking levothyroxine and suffering from hair fall then this is the video for you.

Levothyroxine is the #1 most commonly prescribed thyroid medication for hypothyroidism and low thyroid. But what you may not realize is that it can have many different side effects including hair loss.

Figuring out what causes hair loss can be difficult as a thyroid patient because your thyroid can contribute as well as your thyroid medication.

Use this guide to help you find the root cause of your hair loss so you can finally regrow your hair.

3 ways levothyroxine causes hair loss:

#1. Your levothyroxine dose is too high.
What you may not realize is that hyperthyroidism can lead to hair loss and taking TOO much levothyroxine can cause hyperthyroidism. Check your TSH and free T3/Free t4 levels if you think this may be happening to you. If it is, you will see a drop in your TSH, and an elevation in your free T4 levels. You may also experience the symptoms of hyperthyroidism.

#2. Your levothyroxine dose is too low.
Next, your dose may simply be too low. If your dose is too low then you are still suffering from hypothyroidism and low thyroid can CAUSE hair loss as well. If this is happening to you then you will see a RISE in your TSH and a DROP in your free t3 and free T4 levels.

#3. Your hair loss is directly caused by levothyroxine.
Lastly, levothyroxine ITSELF can cause hair loss regardless of your dose. Don't worry, though, because there is a solution! All you need to do is switch to a different type of thyroid medication to see if that medication causes the same issue. As you swap through thyroid medications you will find one that works for you and does NOT cause hair loss.

Contraindications to Synthroid and Levothyroxine Often Leading To Misdiagnosis
Contraindications to Synthroid and Levothyroxine Often Leading To Misdiagnosis Side Effects 4 Views • 5 months ago

Dr. Stan Schulte, a Wellness Way practitioner and chiropractor in Lincoln, NE, explains the contraindications to synthroid and levothyroxine and how these can lead to misdiagnosis of thyroid issues.

Do I actually like Synthroid? (Advice after treating hundreds of thyroid patients)
Do I actually like Synthroid? (Advice after treating hundreds of thyroid patients) Side Effects 4 Views • 5 months ago

Do I actually like Synthroid? Yes, and no. There is a place for Synthroid but there are MUCH better alternatives out there for treating low thyroid and hypothyroidism.

So, the question: Do I like Synthroid?

The answer is yes! Synthroid (and levothyroxine) still have a lot of value even though many patients don't necessarily do well on them.

Before you call me a pharmaceutical shill, realize that we need to be even-handed in our discussion of thyroid medications. There ARE some people who do well on Synthroid (even if they are the minority).

Why don’t people like Synthroid?

#1. Their dose is probably not right (they are taking too little)
You can push up free T3 and total T3 by increasing your dose. But if you dose based on your TSH you will almost always be underdosed.

#2. It’s one of the most widely prescribed medications in the world
People have had bad experiences on it

#3. Doctors are often dismissive of concerns over Synthroid

Do you have to change thyroid medications to feel better?

Not necessarily. In fact, there are minor changes you can make to feel better very quickly.

Some patients do VERY well on T4 only (these patients include those who are super converters). Some people have no problem taking T4 and turning it directly into T3.

What should you do if you are on levo/Synthroid and not feeling better?

#1. Dose based upon your T4/T3 and reverse T3 level (NOT your TSH)
#2. Switch to a different brand of T4.
#3. If you are Synthroid try levothyroxine.
#4. If you are on levothyroxine try Synthroid.
#4. If you’ve tried both then switch to Tirosint or Tirosint-sol.
#5. Try the 50mcg tablet of Synthroid/levo and dose based on that
Clean up your gut and diet.

Take supplements to support thyroid function (see the list below).

Do T4 Medications Actually Work? Who Should Use Them & Who Shouldn't
Do T4 Medications Actually Work? Who Should Use Them & Who Shouldn't Side Effects 4 Views • 5 months ago

This is video#8 in my thyroid beginner series and it's all about T4 thyroid medication.

T4 thyroid medications like Synthroid, Levothyroxine and Tirosint are among the most commonly prescribed thyroid medications but they don't always work.

But why don't they work?

Doctors make the assumption that your body will be able to convert T4 into T3 (to activate the hormone) at 100% efficiency. The problem is that we know, through genetic studies, that up to 15% of people struggle with this process.

Some people have SNP's which alter the function of deiodinase enzymes and therefore reduce this conversion process.

So why do Doctors still use them?

Because T4 medications have a long half-life and are considered to be very safe (fewer side effects) when compared to other medications. In addition, many doctors aren't comfortable or familiar with other thyroid medications.

Is all hope lost?

No, because you can still use some strategies to improve thyroid function in your body even if you are taking thyroid medication.

Use these 3 tips:

#1. Switch to a different type or brand of T4 medication. Switch from Synthroid to levothyroxine or from levothyroxine to Synthroid and so forth.
#2. Use thyroid medication in doses of 50mcg increments. The 50mcg tablet has fewer dyes and fillers when compared to other dosages of these medicines.
#3. Consider taking your thyroid medication at night. Taking your thyroid medication at night may increase your free thyroid hormones and help you feel better!

Losing Weight on Levothyroxine: Why it's Not Working and How to Fix it
Losing Weight on Levothyroxine: Why it's Not Working and How to Fix it Side Effects 4 Views • 5 months ago

Losing weight on levothyroxine, is it possible? You bet. Here's why your levothyroxine is not helping with weight loss and how to fix it.

Levothyroxine is the most commonly prescribed medication for treating low thyroid or hypothyroidism.

One of the most common symptoms associated with low thyroid function is WEIGHT GAIN. You might think that treating your thyroid using thyroid medication would cause you to lose weight but that isn't always the case and this video explains why that is.

It makes sense that increasing your thyroid hormone should cause weight loss, especially if the opposite leads to weight gain.

So if levothyroxine isn't helping you with weight loss the question is why not? Here are a few reasons why this may be the case:

#1. Is it the right medication for you?
There are many different thyroid medications available on the market and they are not all created equal. Levothyroxine may simply not be the best medication for your body.

#2. Have you waited long enough?
Even if levothyroxine is the right medication for you, have you given it enough time to kick in and to work?
It takes roughly 4-6 weeks to see any change once you make changes to your thyroid medication dose!

#3. Are you taking enough?
While levothyroxine may be the right medication for you, you have to make sure that you are taking enough.
It won't provide any benefit to you if your dose is simply too low.

#4. Is it getting into your system?
And lastly, you have to make sure that the medication you are taking is getting into your system. Believe it or not, people take their thyroid medication incorrectly which leads to decreased absorption in the gut.

When it comes down to it, levothyroxine just isn't always the best option for weight loss. Other thyroid medications, especially those that contain T3 thyroid hormone are often much more effective of that purpose. These medications include things like Armour thyroid, other formulations of NDT, and even T3 only thyroid medications.

If you aren't sure what to do next I've created a list of people who tend to do the BEST on levothyroxine. People in this category include those who are:

- Treatment naive
- Sensitive to T3 and/or NDT medications
- Sensitive to medications and supplements in general
- Have few if any chronic illnesses
- Have seen some improvement on levothyroxine within a short period of time (usually between 4-8 weeks)

Are you using levothyroxine? Is it helping you with weight loss? Let me know below!

Np thyroid: Should you use this thyroid medication? (5 things to know)
Np thyroid: Should you use this thyroid medication? (5 things to know) Side Effects 4 Views • 5 months ago

NP thyroid is a thyroid medication often referred to as the generic of Armour thyroid (even though this isn't true). Find out if you should use NP thyroid and if it's actually going to help you.

Today we are going to talk about the thyroid medication known as NP thyroid.

What is NP thyroid?

NP thyroid is an NDT formulation (meaning it is like other formulations of natural desiccated thyroid) that is becoming more popular nowadays because it is becoming more difficult to get the other brands.

Should you use it? How is it different? Does it work? these are the questions we will be going over today.

Here are 5 things you should know about NP thyroid before using it:

#1. It is an NDT formulation.

The first thing that you should know is that NP thyroid is an NDT formulation. This means that it shares some similarities with other formulations of natural desiccated thyroid.

These similarities include the fact that all of these medications contain calcitonin, T4, T3, T2, and T1. Even though they all contain these BASIC ingredients they do differ in their inactive ingredients.

#2. NP thyroid vs Armour thyroid.

You should know that NP thyroid is NOT the same thing as Armour thyroid. Your pharmacist may try to convince you that these are the same medications but they are not. Sometimes Armour is referred to as the brand name and NP as the generic but again that isn't true either.

These medications differ in their ingredient profile and thus how they interact in your body.

Armour thyroid has 1 extra ingredient compared to NP thyroid which is technically slightly more "clean" compared to Armour thyroid.

If you are sensitive to inactive ingredients then you might fare better on NP over armour thyroid.

#3. NP thyroid vs levothyroxine and Synthroid.

These two classes of medications differ by quite a bit! While levothyroxine and Synthroid only contain T4 thyroid hormone you should know that NP thyroid contains T4, T3, T2, and T1. This means that NP thyroid has a more complete thyroid hormone profile.

#4. NP thyroid and weight loss.

You should also be aware that NP thyroid will be superior to levothyroxine and Synthroid in terms of its ability to help you lose weight. This is mostly attributed to the fact that NP thyroid contains T3 thyroid hormone.

#5. NP thyroid cost.

NP thyroid is actually very reasonably priced, especially when compared to Armour thyroid.

It is not, however, cheaper than levothyroxine/Synthroid, though, which is very cheap.

Armour thyroid - 10 things you should know BEFORE using it
Armour thyroid - 10 things you should know BEFORE using it Side Effects 4 Views • 5 months ago

Armour thyroid and 10 things you should know before you take this thyroid medication. Is armour thyroid the best medication for thyroid patients?

Whether you are thinking about using Armour thyroid or if you are already using it, you should be aware of these 10 things!

These 10 things will help you to understand more about armour thyroid as a thyroid medication and whether or not it is right for you.

10 things you should know about Armour thyroid include:

#1. Armour thyroid is not the only formulation of NDT.
You should be aware that while armour thyroid is a great thyroid medication it is not the only (or even the best) form of NDT.

#2. Armour thyroid is better for weight loss compared to Synthroid and levothyroxine.
Studies consistently show that armour thyroid helps with weight loss more than Synthroid/levo.

#3. Armour thyroid is the most expensive version of NDT.
1 month supply of Armour thyroid will cost you around $30 while 1 month supply of NP thyroid will run around $7.

#4. It contains animal products.
All formulations of NDT, including Armour thyroid, contain animal products.

#5. It contains both T4 and T3.
One of the reasons this medication is so effective is because it contains BOTH T4 and T3.

#6. It contains additional ingredients such as calcitonin, T1, and T2.
In addition to T4 and T3 Armour also contains other thyroid hormones such as T1 and T2.

#7. It is preferred over Synthroid/levothyroxine by thyroid patients.
Patients consistently show in medical research that they prefer Armour over Synthroid/levo.

#8. It is NOT the generic of NP thyroid.
Sometimes a pharmacist will try to switch out Armour for NP thyroid but they are NOT the same thing.

#9. Switching from T4 to Armour thyroid can be difficult.
If you decide to switch to Armour from Levo/synthroid then you should use a conversion chart to help.

#10. Armour thyroid impacts your lab tests different than levothyroxine and Synthroid.
Armour tends to impact your TSH, free t3, and free t4 differently from other thyroid medications.

Levothyroxine, a generic medication is also known as Synthroid, which is a brand name, or Tirosint or by other names depending on who the manufacturer is. It’s the top medication prescribed for thyroid problems in the United States. And 9 out of 10 times that’s the medication that most insurance companies prefer to cover. Today, I'm going to cover why levothyroxine sucks, why it is not suitable for everyone and how it could exacerbate your Hashimoto’s or hypothyroidism symptoms. Watch this video to learn more.

10 Important Tips for Taking Synthroid: Dosing, Side Effects, T3 Medications & More
10 Important Tips for Taking Synthroid: Dosing, Side Effects, T3 Medications & More Side Effects 3 Views • 5 months ago

10 important tips for taking Synthroid. This list includes how to dose Synthroid, the side effects of Synthroid, how Synthroid compares to T3 thyroid hormone, and more!

Today is all about Synthroid. If you take this medication then you'll want to learn more about these 10 tips and tricks that you can use to help feel better.

Synthroid is one of the most common thyroid medications used to treat hypothyroidism but it's not without problems.

These tips are designed to help you find your optimal dose, help you understand if you are absorbing Synthroid, help you figure out if you need a new medication and more.

10 Tips to know when taking Synthroid:

#1. Peripheral T4 to T3 conversion
First off, you need to understand that Synthroid contains the inactive thyroid hormone T4. This means that in order for thyroid hormone to be utilized in your body it must first be activated through peripheral thyroid conversion. Several factors including genetics, inflammation, nutrient deficiencies and so on can impact this process. There are situations in which you may be taking enough Synthroid but your body is not able to activate it.

#2. Absorption of Synthroid
In order for your body to use Synthroid, it must also be absorbed in your intestinal tract! Several medications, supplements, and even foods can impact how much you absorb. Do your best to take Synthroid away from supplements such as Calcium and Iron which can limit absorption.

#3. Are supplements helping or hurting you?
Some supplements can decrease absorption but there are others that can help. The use of Selenium and Zinc can help your body activate Synthroid after it is absorbed.

#4. The time of day that you take Synthroid
Synthroid can be safely taken in the morning but it can also be taken at night. Studies have shown that patients who take it in the evening actually have higher free T4 and free T3!

#5. Levothyroxine vs Synthroid: Are they the same?
Levothyroxine and Synthroid both contain the same active ingredient but they are not considered bio-equivalents.

#6. Tirosint

#7. Dosage

#8. Switching to NDT or T3 medication

#9. The full thyroid lab panel

These tests will give you an idea as to how your body is utilizing Synthroid.

#10. Synthroid side effects
Lastly, make sure that you watch our for the side effects of Synthroid which include:
- Weight gain
- Hair loss
- Heart palpitations
- Rashes
- Headaches
- Insomnia
- Hot flashes
- Changes in menstrual cycle

Any of these side effects may indicate you need to switch medications!

Common questions I receive about Symbicort and a demonstration of correct inhaler technique. If you twist the Symbicort more than needed, will this affect the amount of medication you inhale? Is it possible to overdose with medication this way?

How to prevent hoarse voice due to inhalers?
How to prevent hoarse voice due to inhalers? Side Effects 2 Views • 5 months ago

Tips to prevent voice hoarseness caused by inhaler use. Many patients complain of a hoarse voice when using inhalers, especially those which contain corticosteroids (such as Symbicort, Seretide, Foster etc.). These inhaler treatments are beneficial for controlling conditions such as asthma, however a hoarse voice can develop in some patients.

Often, there are 2 causes which are often overlooked:

1. Incorrect inhaler technique - many patients were never shown the correct inhaler technique for their prescribed device. There are many inhalers available and using them correctly can be confusing. Incorrect use causes the medication to deposit at the back of the throat, which in time causes irritation and a hoarse voice. I recommend to always ask your doctor or healthcare professional for a demonstration on how to use any newly prescribed inhaler and to regularly check your technique during consultations. Breathing in the medication correctly from the inhaler is specific to each device, however can be generally classified in two broad categories: A) slow and deep breath for MDI inhalers (which produce a puff on their own) and B) strong/powerful and deep breath in for DPI inhalers (which contain a dry powder, therefore require more force to effectively draw the medication deep into the lungs).

2. Not rinsing the back of the throat after taking the dose - This is often overlooked and a very simple way to prevent inhaler-induced voice hoarseness. Especially with corticosteroid inhalers, removing any residual medication from the back of the throat and mouth is very helpful. You can do this by simply taking some water in your mouth, swishing it around, gargling for a few seconds and spitting it out. I highly recommend doing this after using your inhaler. The medication only needs to be in the airways deep in the lungs.

With MDI inhalers, a spacer device can sometimes also help:

Symbicort 320/9mcg Turbuhaler | Uses, Side Effects, Dosage, Review

Symbicort 320/9mcg Turbuhaler is a combination medication that is used for the management of asthma and moderate to severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) in adults and children over 6 years. Its active ingredients, budesonide and formoterol, work synergistically to alleviate respiratory symptoms by reducing airway inflammation and relaxing bronchial muscles, respectively. Patients often experience difficulty breathing, wheezing, and coughing due to these conditions. Regular use helps prevent exacerbations and manage daily symptoms effectively. Common side effects may include muscle pain, difficulty sleeping, increased heart rate, and elevated blood sugar levels. It is essential to monitor for any worsening symptoms and consult a healthcare provider as needed. Before initiating therapy, a thorough assessment of respiratory function is recommended, and patients should disclose any existing medical conditions or medications to avoid potential interactions. Symbicort is not suitable for children under 6 years and should be used cautiously in individuals with heart or liver issues. This medication is not intended for acute asthma attacks. It is vital to follow your doctor’s instructions regarding dosage and administration for optimal results.

Symbicort dose counter not working?
Symbicort dose counter not working? Side Effects 3 Views • 5 months ago

Symbicort dose counter issue - is it not going down? Stuck? Not moving? You actually need to take around 20 doses until you will see some change, this is normal. The dose counter is there to just give you a rough estimate of how many doses are left. There is no reason to think that it is a broken Symbicort turbuhaler inhaler, just need to be patient and to continue taking it as prescribed by your doctor.

Miscommunication about asthma treatment side effects (inhaled corticosteroids)
Miscommunication about asthma treatment side effects (inhaled corticosteroids) Side Effects 4 Views • 5 months ago

Communication about asthma treatments can sometimes be misunderstood during a consultation. It is very important to always ask questions about your treatment when seeing a doctor about asthma, to make sure that you understand what each inhaler and treatment is for. Especially when there are side effects from medication, it is really important to clarify which drug is actually causing the side effect.
In this comment it was about inhaled corticosteroids being thought to be the cause of heart problems, which I think was not really the case, but likely a miscommunication either on the part of the physician or a misunderstanding on the part of the patient. Really important to clarify the situation with the doctor to not discount treatments that can actually be beneficial.

WHAT IS A TURBOHALER:
Turbohalers are commonly prescribed for patients with asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) as they are very effective at delivering the medication straight to the lungs where it is needed. Using your turbohaler correctly is an important part of asthma or COPD treatment. You should be shown how to use turbohaler properly by a healthcare professional when they are first prescribed.

HOW TO USE A TURBOHALER:
Why is technique important,
• It allows the correct dose of medication to reach your lungs.
• It gives you better control of your condition.

Please watch the video for the full explanation on how to use a turbohaler and how to prime a new device,
1- Breathe out gently and slowly away from the inhaler until your lungs feel empty and you feel ready to breathe in.
2- Hold the inhaler horizontally, but don’t tip it upside down as the powder may fall out.
3- Place the mouthpiece between teeth without biting and close lips to form a good seal. Remember, do not cover the air vents.
4- Then breathe in forcefully as strongly and deeply as you can until your lungs are full. This is key to make sure that a full dose can reach your lungs.
5- You may not be able to sense if the medicine has entered your lungs from inhaling the device, this lack of sensation does not mean that it hasn't reached the lungs, you should not repeat the dose even if you do not feel this sensation.
6- For those of you who can’t inhale strongly or deeply, maybe a turbohaler isn’t the correct inhaler for you. You can usually tell if you can't breathe in enough by tasting the powder from the inhaler, as it can’t reach your lungs or with some inhalers, not hearing a ‘click’ sound. Please speak to a healthcare professional if this happens.
7- After inhaling take the inhaler out of your mouth and hold your breath for up to 10 seconds, or for as long as you comfortably can.
8- Then breathe out gently away from the inhaler. If you’ve been prescribed a second puff, repeat these steps.

Common mistakes that are made with Turbohalers include:
• Not holding the Turbohaler upright when loading the dose.
• Not twisting the grip in both directions to load the dose correctly.
• Not inhaling strongly enough to draw the medication out of the Turbohaler and in to your
lungs.
• Moisture from breathing out getting inside the Turbohaler and leaving the cover off.

Useful tips
• Place the Turbohaler on a table to keep it upright when loading the dose.
• Replace the cover after use.
• If your Turbohaler contains a corticosteroid rinse your mouth out with water after your
dose.
• Speak to your healthcare professional if you experience problems using your Turbohaler.
• Always read the patient leaflet provided with your Turbohaler for any specific instructions

How to know Symbicort was inhaled correctly?
How to know Symbicort was inhaled correctly? Side Effects 2 Views • 5 months ago

Have you used Symbicort Turbuhaler correctly? It may be difficult to know sometimes as the medication powder contained in the device generally doesn't have a taste. Normally if the inhaler technique is correct, the medication should be delivered to the deeper parts of the lungs where it is needed. Symbicort Turbuhaler is a dry powder inhaler (DPI), meaning that we need to empty the lungs first before inhaling forcefully and deeply in order to generate the required air flow that will carry the medication deep within the airways. I hope this video clarifies some concerns that some of you may have relating to the use of these inhalers.

How to use the Turbuhaler inhalers (such as Symbicort). I demonstrate the correct inhaler technique, review the inhaler and give you tips on how to use it more efficiently and prevent common side effects.
Always discuss with your doctor about your inhaler treatment, to make sure you are using it appropriately for your own particular case. Never make changes to your medication without consulting your own doctor first.

Should you be worried about
Should you be worried about Side Effects 2 Views • 5 months ago

This is a comment about using inhalers with corticosteroid medication, which is normally required generally in the treatment of asthma. By using inhalers correctly and having good asthma control, we may actually reduce the need to use "steroid" tablets such as prednisolone, which contain a much higher dose than inhalers.
The dose of corticosteroids contained in inhalers is extremely low, but it is still effective because the medication goes directly into the airways where it needs to act. With tablets, it is more likely to have side effects as the corticosteroids act in other places around the body as well.

Questions and answers about Symbicort Turbuhaler
Questions and answers about Symbicort Turbuhaler Side Effects 1 Views • 5 months ago

I answer some very good questions received on my previous video on how to use Symbicort (https://youtu.be/6dAtTudyqII):
What happens if you make a mistake when priming the device and you hear two clicks? Would that give a double dose or an overdose? Should the powder have a taste - i cannot feel anything when taking it, is it broken? Can you still use the inhaler if the dose counter shows 0 and is in red but the powder inside still rattles? Good idea to clean the mouthpiece before putting the cover back. Is it normal for the mouthpiece to rotate/twist and does this block the inhaler? For how long do you need to take Symbicort? Is it normal for the dose counter to seem stuck after a few doses were taken? Can you stop taking Symbicort for a few days if you are feeling better?

What is Symbicort used for? Common respiratory issues treated, dosing , potential side effects
What is Symbicort used for? Common respiratory issues treated, dosing , potential side effects Side Effects 2 Views • 5 months ago

Symbicort contains two active ingredients:. budesonide and formoterol. Budesonide is an inhaled corticosteroid (ICS) that reduces inflammation in the airways. It works by suppressing the immune response that causes swelling and narrowing of the airways, thereby improving breathing. Formoterol, on the other hand, is a long-acting beta2-agonist (LABA) that relaxes the muscles in the airways, making it easier to breathe.
The combination of budesonide and formoterol in Symbicort provides a dual-action effect, targeting both the underlying inflammation and the bronchoconstriction associated with respiratory conditions. By addressing these two aspects, Symbicort effectively improves lung function and reduces symptoms in individuals with asthma and COPD.
It is important to note that Symbicort should be used regularly as prescribed by a healthcare professional, even when symptoms are not present. Consistent use is necessary to maintain control over respiratory conditions and prevent exacerbations.
Dosing guidelines for Symbicort.
The dosing of Symbicort may vary depending on the individual's age, severity of the respiratory condition, and the healthcare professional's recommendations. It is crucial to follow the prescribed dosage instructions for optimal results and to minimize the risk of side effects.
For adults and adolescents aged 12 years and older with asthma, the recommended starting dose is usually 2 inhalations of Symbicort 80/4.5 mcg or Symbicort 160/4.5 mcg twice daily. However, the dosage may be adjusted based on the individual's response to treatment and the healthcare professional's assessment. The maximum recommended dose is 2 inhalations of Symbicort 160/4.5 mcg twice daily.
For individuals with COPD, the recommended starting dose is typically 2 inhalations of Symbicort 160/4.5 mcg twice daily. Again, the dosage may be adjusted based on the individual's response to treatment and the healthcare professional's assessment. The maximum recommended dose is 2 inhalations of Symbicort 160/4.5 mcg twice daily.
It is important to use the inhaler correctly to ensure the proper delivery of the medication. Before using Symbicort for the first time, it is essential to prime the inhaler by releasing two test sprays into the air, away from the face. This ensures that the inhaler is ready for use. The inhaler should be shaken well before each use, and the mouthpiece should be placed between the lips, forming a tight seal. After inhaling deeply and slowly, the breath should be held for a few seconds before exhaling. It is important not to exhale into the inhaler.
Potential side effects of Symbicort.
As with any medication, Symbicort may cause potential side effects. It is crucial to be aware of these side effects and to consult a healthcare professional if they persist or worsen over time. The most common side effects of Symbicort include headache, throat irritation, cough, and fungal infections in the mouth and throat (oral candidiasis).
