Overview of the antidepressant Remeron (mirtazepine), which is not only free of sexual dysfunction, but actually quite effectively reverses anorgasmia caused by SSRIs, as well as blocking the nausea caused by those medications (and queasiness in general, from any cause). It is also an excellent, non-habit-forming antihistaminergic sleep aide and can be taken once a day, at bedtime, alone or in combination with other antidepressants, for depression, anxiety, insomnia, nausea, anorgasmia, and anorexia, given that it also greatly stimulates the appetite (usually considered an unwanted side effect). Because it increases both serotonin and norepinephrine by unique mechanisms of action, it combines well with reuptake inhibitors in a synergistic fashion that avoids redundancy in terms of mechanism of action. It is especially favored in the treatment of elderly patients.
