A stable, most potent, sedative first generation antihistamine, which is effective in the treatment of allergic disorders or the common cold such as sneezing, itching, watery eyes, and runny nose.

(Side effects)
• drowsiness: First generation antihistamines penetrate readily into the brain to cause sedation, drowsiness, fatigue and impaired concentration and memory. (Second generation antihistamines are less likely to produce sedation.)
• dizziness, blurred vision
• dry mouth, nose, and throat
• nausea, stomach pain
• constipation
• problems with memory or concentration, nervousness, restlessness or excitability (especially in children)

(Drug interactions)
• diuretics
• aspirin
• antimuscarinics, bladder or urinary medications, bronchodilators: glycopyrrolate, mepenzolate, atropine, belladonna, benztropine, dimenhydrinate, methscopolamine, scopolamine
• antidepressants, MAO inhibitors
• irritable bowel medications
