Your Medication Nifedipine

Nifedipine is also known as the brand names Procardia, Procardia XL, Nifedical XL, Adalat CC.

Nifedipine comes in 10 and 20 mg capsules. Nifedipine also comes in 30, 60, 90 mg extended release tablet.

Nifedipine is most commonly used for chest pain or pressure or high blood pressure. Nifedipine may be used for preterm labor or for Raynaud phenomenon. No matter what your doctor has you taking nifedipine for, nifedipine is usually taken by mouth and is safe to take with meals or on an empty stomach. Nifedipine should not be taken with grapefruit juice.

Standard dosing of nifedipine immediate release capsules ranges from 10 mg three times a day to 30 mg three to four times per day. Extended release nifedipine doses range from 30 to 60 mg once daily.

Some common side effects with nifedipine include flushing of the skin, swelling of the hands or feet, and dizziness/lightheadedness.
Some less common side effects with nifedipine include a heartbeat that does not feel normal, nervousness, tiredness, cough/wheezing, and muscle cramps.

While taking nifedipine, remember it is important to tell your doctor, pharmacist, or dentist if you have:
• You have signs of an allergic reaction such as rash, itching, swelling, or tightness of the chest.
• You pass out
• You have a heartbeat that does not feel normal
• You have muscle pain or movements that are not normal
• You have new or worsening chest pain

Niacinamide, also known as nicotinamide, is a form of vitamin B3 and is used to prevent and treat niacin deficiency, also known as pellagra. Niacin deficiency can cause symptoms such as diarrhea, confusion, redness and swelling of the tongue, and peeling red skin. Niacinamide is often used instead of niacin because it causes fewer side effects, such as flushing. However, it does not help correct blood fat levels and cannot be substituted for niacin if you are being treated for a blood fat problem, such as high cholesterol.

Niacin deficiency may occur due to a poor diet, certain medical conditions, or long-term use of certain medications, such as isoniazid. It is best to get your vitamins from healthy foods, but a multivitamin may be recommended by your doctor instead of niacinamide if your diet is poor and causing deficiencies in more than one vitamin.
