Ever wonder about medicines like Trulicity, Ozempic, or Victoza? These diabetes medications all work in a similar way in the management of Type 2 Diabetes and improving A1c. In this video, I discuss the natural role of GLP-1 in managing blood glucose, how these medications fit into that role, what the benefits are, and what the side effects are.

Sulfonylureas (SU) were discovered in the 1950's. In this class, glimepiride, glyburide and glipizide are the most commonly used in the United States today.

Sulfonylureas are only indicated for type 2 diabetes. They are not used in Type 1 Diabetes. To date, only insulin is approved for the treatment of type 1 Diabetes.

Metformin is used first line for the treatment of type 2 diabetes. Sulfonylureas are widely used after metformin. However, the ADA guidelines recommend this class of medications last. We are now using newer classes that work better in the management of type 2 diabetes.

SU's are generic and are inexpensive. They work by telling your pancreas to make more insulin. One of the defects in type 2 diabetes is that the pancreas is unable to produce adequate amount of insulin therefore causing higher than normal blood sugar levels.

Although these medications are inexpensive, they are not favored. They can cause hypoglycemia (low blood sugar levels) and can lead to weight gain amongst other possible side effects. Additionally, people who are started on SU's early on in the disease process are more likely to require insulin earlier on.


SU's can reduce hba1c by nearly 2% which is significant reduction.

Okay, so assuming you finally know your Diabetes status, supposing it turns out to be positive, how should you go about treating it? What is the best course of action open to you? What would treatment involve and what would you need to do or refrain from doing to ensure that treatment is successful? All these questions and more will be answered in this article. Generally since diabetes is referenced by an above normal presence of blood sugar (200 mg/dl or more-random plasma Glucose test or 126 mg/dl or more- fasting plasma glucose test), it is the aim of diabetes treatment to ensure that whether through medication, exercise, surgery, dietary adjustments, etc. Glimepiride Side Effects Weight Gain


Accordingly, the monitoring of blood sugar is also an essential aspect of diabetes treatment. The first thing to note therefore, assuming you are diagnosed with diabetes is that diabetes treatment equates to diabetes management.
