Study this Macrolides NCLEX Pharmacology mnemonic and other mnemonics with Pixorize.
Macrolides are drugs recognizable by their common ending of “-thromycin”, including erythromycin, azithromycin, and clarithromycin. Macrolides are antibiotics and can be used clinically to treat a wide spectrum of bacterial infections. Macrolides have the potential to cause QT prolongation, which could lead to the potentially fatal torsades de pointes, so keep an eye on the patient’s cardiac rhythm. Another side effect of taking macrolides is GI distress. Macrolides are hepatotoxic, meaning they can cause liver damage. Closely monitor the patient’s liver enzymes while they are taking the drug.

Anapen, EpiPen and EpiPen auto-injectors both contain the active ingredient adrenaline, which is a hormone produced naturally by the body.
AnaPen is an emergency treatment of life-threatening allergic reactions (anaphylactic reactions) for example to food, drugs, insect bites or stings or other allergens.
EpiPen auto-injectors are prescribed to people who have a history or recognised risk of going into anaphylactic shock due to a severe allergy. The EpiPen is intended for self-administration, or administration by a family member or carer, in an emergency. Two EpiPens should be carried with you at all times.
The EpiPen is designed as emergency treatment only. You must always seek medical help immediately after using it in case further treatment is needed.

In the first human trials, a new epinephrine nasal powder spray has been shown to be as effective as an EpiPen and may have a longer shelf life.
https://www.healthday.com/heal....thday-tv/allergies/n
Epinephrine pens are lifesavers for millions of Americans at risk for anaphylaxis from food allergies or bee stings.
But the needle can be a hurdle for some patients and caregivers in charge of administering it.
A new option may soon be available – an epinephrine nasal powder spray.
Results of the first human trials were released at the annual meeting of the American Academy of Asthma, Allergy and Immunology.
“We did a study in healthy volunteers to study the absorption of the nasal powders. And we did find that we got absorption comparable to EpiPen. And also, we got, pharmacodynamic effects that you would expect on blood pressure and heart rate. So, it seems to be feasible to use this for treatment of anaphylaxis.”
Lead author Martin Jönsson says a longer shelf life may be another benefit of the nasal powder spray developed by OrexoAB.
“We compared it to EpiPen, and we used an accelerated condition….104°F. So quite warm. And we stored it for 12 months. And we did see almost no degradation of our powders, but over 30% degradation of EpiPen.”
Jönsson says most participants experienced mild nasal discomfort, as well as side effects similar to the EpiPen, such as increases in heart rate and blood pressure.
The next step will be to verify these results in people with ongoing allergic symptoms, which can impact nasal mucosa.

EpiPens are used for the emergency treatment of severe allergic reactions, also called anaphylaxis. It’s available as a pre-filled, single-dose autoinjector.

It is injected into the muscle or under the skin of the outer thigh (upper leg).
If you have been prescribed EpiPen, the brand name for epinephrine, you should have received training from your healthcare professional on how and when to give yourself the injection safely.
You should also become familiar with the Instructions for Use that came with your prescription.
In this video, we will review step-by–step how to give yourself or someone else an EpiPen injection.
Step One: Check your pen to make sure the blue safety top is not raised. Grip the pen with one hand with the orange end pointing down. Then, pull the blue safety top straight off.
Step two: Place the orange end firmly against the outer thigh and push down until you hear a click, continue to hold it in place for 3 seconds to make sure that all the medicine is given. You can do this over clothing, if needed.
Step three: Get emergency medical help right away. You might need to use a second EpiPen if your symptoms continue or come back while you wait for emergency help.
Talk to your healthcare provider about how to dispose of your used EpiPens. They might have you bring them to your next appointment, or instruct you to throw them away into a sharps container.
If you have any questions about how to inject EpiPen, contact your healthcare provider or the manufacturer, Mylan.

Knowing when to use epinephrine is vital, but sometimes fear can get in the way of planning. This webinar will review the symptoms of allergic reaction to food, the indications for using epinephrine, and how epinephrine works in the body. Participants will explore worries that can interfere with the use of epinephrine and learn how fear of epinephrine is not supported by the evidence.
