Has your pet just been diagnosed and your wondering what the treatment of arthritis in dogs and cats is? In this video I discuss the different drug treatments available, what the side effects are and how we can monitor our dogs and cats with arthritis to ensure they are as pain free as possible while at the same time minimizing side effects.

In this 3rd video in my arthritis series you will find out what drug is the best arthritis treatment for dogs and cats. Combined with the home care strategies discussed in my second video and you will be well on the way to ensuring your pet is as comfortable as possible.

There are many options out there and there can be no one-size-fits-all solution. Different drug treatments for arthritis will work differently in every individual. We also need to take into account any other illnesses the arthritis patient has. After all most arthritis dogs and cats are more elderly and the chance of a concurrent disease is reasonably high. Our arthritis treatment plan might be very different for an otherwise healthy senior compared to one also suffering from chronic renal disease or a liver condition. the best drugs to treat arthritis really will vary between individual.

NSAIDs are the most common choice and do an excellent job in most cases. Other options might include tramadol, gabapentin and even paracetamol (but never in cats).

Monitoring a dog or cats response to any home treatment changes or medications is also very important. Arthritis is a progressive disease and so what works now may not be enough in the future. Monitoring will ensure we make changes to our plan in good time rather than leaving our pets to suffer.

There is no cat or dog arthritis cure but we are able to treat this disease better than at any point in the past. You owe your pet as good a quality of life as possible.

Adamantanes such as amantadine and memantine are known to have antiviral properties. The tricyclo-bridged hydrocarbon structure interferes with viroporin protein channel responsible for release of RNA-viruses. In a human model cell line, expression of the CTSL gene coding for the cathepsin L, a lysosomal protease involved in SARS-CoV-2 entry to cells, is significantly downregulated by amantadine. Antiviral effects shown for amantadine and memantine in models for bovine coronavirus, mouse hepatitis virus, human coronavirus OC43, and SARS‐CoV led to the suggestion that adamantanes could be used for COVID-19

Antiparkinson drugs are medications used to treat the symptoms of Parkinson's disease.
Most of these agents act by either increasing dopamine activity or reducing acetylcholine activity in the central nervous system. Colchicine is a medicine for treating inflammation and pain. It works by reducing the inflammation caused by the crystals of uric acid that build up in your joints when you have gout. This also helps to reduce pain.

It can be used to:

- Treat gout
- Prevent gout from coming back when you first start on long-term medicines like allopurinol
- Prevent symptoms of familial Mediterranean fever (FMF), an inherited inflammatory condition.

Gout is a type of arthritis that causes sudden, severe joint pain. See a GP for treatment to help during an attack and to stop further attacks.

Colchicine is available on prescription. It comes as tablets.

Key facts

1. Colchicine starts to work after around 30 minutes to 2 hours, but it may take a day or two for your pain to start to get better.
2. It's important to stick to your prescribed dose. Taking even a little bit more can be very serious.
3. Avoid grapefruit and grapefruit juice while taking colchicine. It can increase the amount of colchicine in your body.
4. Taking colchicine with or after food may be easier on your stomach.
5. Drinking too much alcohol can increase the level of uric acid in your blood. This could make your gout worse.

Today I’m going to share the best remedies for gout. The current medical gout treatment has side effects. But, these natural remedies for gout have little to no side effects.

Gout is a situation where there is a buildup of uric acid. The crystals primarily build up in the big toe, but they can build up in other places as well.

She is a practising rheumatologist and wears many hats as a mother, teacher, mentor, and speaker. Previously, she was a basic science researcher and clinical faculty at the University of Washington.

She is currently the Managing Partner of Overlake Arthritis and Osteoporosis Center, in Bellevue WA, which now has a state-of-the-art rheumatology facility and infusion clinic to meet the needs of the growing population of patients with autoimmune diseases in the greater Seattle area.
