Generic name: Propranolol.
Brand names: Propranolol.
Available as a tablet, delayed release capsule and as a drink.
How to use it?
- Tablet: Just swallow it with half a glass of water.
- Capsule: make sure to swallow it whole with water. Don’t chew on the capsule and don’t break it, as this could decrease its effectivity.
- Drink: measure the precise amount you need to take with measuring cup. Take this amount. Afterwards rinse the cup with some water and drink this water as well.
When to use it?
Propranolol is part of a group of drugs called beta blockers. These reduce the workload on your heart and widen your blood vessels, causing your heart to beat slower and with less force. Therefore Propranolol can be used to treat; a high blood pressure; several types of heart problems (like arrhytmias and angina pectoris), thyroid problems, migraine, tremor and anxiety.
What is the correct dosage?
The precise dose will depend on your specific indication of use, the side effect you might experience and the severity of your symptoms. Therefore always use the precise amount and frequency your doctor prescribed you.
- However, when treating a high blood pressure in adults, most doctors will start with an initial dose of 40mg 2-3x/day (when taking tablets) or 80mg 1x per/day (when taking capsules). Which if necessary can be slowly increased up to a max. dose of 320 mg/day.
What are the side-effects?
- Common (1-10%): slow heart rate, shortness of breath, nightmares, cold hands/feet and fatigue.
- Uncommon (0.1-1%): diarrhoea, nausea and vomiting.
- Rare (0.01-0.1%): changes in your blood values, worsening of heart failure, low blood pressure, hallucinations, fainting, psychoses, mood swings, confusion, amnesia, dizziness, visual disturbances, dry eyes and skin rash.
- Very rare (0.01%): aggravation of myasthenia gravis, myasthenia gravis-like syndrome, alteration in fat metabolism and low blood sugar.
Safety:
- The first days of using propranolol it can lead to dizziness or fatigue. Please do not drive while experiencing this.
- Furthermore, alcohol widens the blood vessels. It can therefore increase the side effect of dizziness at the beginning of treatment. Try drinking alcohol in moderation first so you can estimate its effects.
- In addition smoking speeds up the breakdown of this drug. If you stop smoking, the amount of this drug in the blood may increase. This can make it stronger or cause side effects.
- Propranolol can also have interactions with other drugs your are taking. Always discuss this with your prescribing doctor.
- Lastly, propranolol could be dangerous for pregnant women and women who are breastfeeding. Therefore always discuss this with your personal doctor.
- Disclaimer: this video and the comments are meant purely informational! This is not medical advice! If you are looking for medical advice always contact your own doctor. -

Additionally, propranolol has membrane-stabilizing properties that contribute to its anti-arrhythmic effects. It inhibits the movement of ions across cell membranes, which helps regulate abnormal electrical activity in the heart. It also decreases the heart rate and force of contraction.
What are the most Common Side Effects of Propranolol?
• Fatigue and Drowsiness
• Gastrointestinal Issues
• Cold Hands and Feet
• Sexual Dysfunction
Serious Side Effects of Propranolol:

Acetaminophen, more commonly known by brand names such as Tylenol, is not a true NSAID, as it does not have anti-inflammatory properties. However, it is commonly discussed alongside NSAIDs as it has similar antipyretic and analgesic properties. Although its mechanism of action is not well-understood, there is still plenty to discuss in terms of its properties and applications, so let's get a closer look at this famous drug.

Although Acetaminophen has certain side effects, the majority of individuals do not experience them. In rare instances, individuals have had allergic responses.
Contact your physician if you develop any of these allergic symptoms with Acetaminophen:
Breathing difficulties
Facial, lip, throat, or tongue swelling
Skin peeling
Severe itching
Severe liver damage
Acetaminophen poisoning may occur if an excessive amount is consumed. Additionally, excessive dosages may damage your liver. However, if you take Acetaminophen as prescribed, the medication is unlikely to cause liver damage.

In this video Doctor O'Donovan explains key facts about Co-codamol - a combination painkiller made up of paracetamol and codeine. It's used to treat various types of pain including headaches, muscle pain, migraines, and toothache and it is especially helpful when common painkillers like ibuprofen or aspirin aren't effective.
What is Co-Codamol?
Co-codamol is a combination of two medicines - paracetamol and codeine phosphate. It is known by its brand names Kapake, Solpadol and Tylex.
What are the strengths and doses of co-codamol?
Co-codamol tablets and capsules come in 3 different strengths, containing 8mg, 15mg or 30mg of codeine. All 3 strengths contain 500mg of paracetamol – the same as in a standard paracetamol tablet or capsule.
The strength of co-codamol appears as 2 numbers on the packet. For example, 8/500 means each tablet or capsule contains 8mg of codeine and 500mg of paracetamol.
You can buy the lowest strength of co-codamol (8/500) without a prescription but only from a pharmacy. The higher strengths (15/500 and 30/500) are only available on prescription from a doctor.
What are the doses of co-codamol?
Adults can take 1 or 2 tablets (of any strength) up to 4 times in 24 hours. It's important to leave a gap of at least 4 to 6 hours between doses of co-codamol. The maximum dose is 8 co-codamol tablets in 24 hours.
Taking too much co-codamol can be very dangerous. That's because the paracetamol in it can cause liver damage. Do not increase the dose of co-codamol or take more than 2 tablets at once, even if your pain is very bad.
Can I drink alcohol if I take co-codamol?
According to NHS UK "It's best to stop drinking alcohol during the first few days of treatment until you see how co-codamol affects you. Drinking alcohol while you're taking co-codamol can make you feel more sleepy. It can also increase the risk of serious side effects."
Can I become addicted to co-codamol?
If you take co-codamol regularly for a long time, you can become addicted to the codeine in it. That is because codeine (one of the ingredients) is addictive. It is really important that you are aware of this. If you have bought co-codamol at a pharmacy, follow the instructions that come with the medicine and only take it for up to 3 days at a time.
