Fatal Side Effects
Learn about metoprolol side effects from a pharmacist. Metoprolol, which is available in the immediate-release form as Lopressor® (metoprolol tartrate) or the extended-release form as Toprol-XL® (metoprolol succinate), has a number of side effects ranging from something as simple as diarrhea to things as life-threatening as hypotension, bradycardia, and difficulty breathing. Here, the pharmacist explains how many of the most common side effects can be linked directly to metoprolol's mechanism of action as a beta receptor blocking agent. The pharmacist also warns about the risk of heart attack and ventricular arrhythmias associated with abruptly stopping metoprolol, and the risks associated with using high doses of metoprolol in patients with asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

***Correction:
Recently, it came to my attention that I made an error in pronouncing the name of the medication, metoprolol. For those who might not be familiar, metoprolol is a beta-blocker commonly prescribed for managing high blood pressure and heart conditions. The correct pronunciation is "meh-TOE-pro-lol." I want to extend a big thank you to our community for highlighting this, and I'm grateful for the opportunity to correct it.

Summary:
Metoprolol belongs to a drug class called beta blockers. In simple terms, a beta-blocker works by blocking specific chemical signals in your body that regulate or slow down your heart rate. Not only that, but it also makes your blood vessels wider so blood can flow more easily and reduces pressure on your heart. Metoprolol is used to treat different conditions, including high blood pressure and heart problems such as heart failure, irregular heartbeats, and angina or chest pain. However, it's crucial to be aware of the side effects of metoprolol, from a slow heart rate to fatigue, dizziness, depression or mood changes, weird dreams, low blood pressure, cold hands and feet, skin rashes, and shortness of breath. In this informative video, we discuss the side effects of metoprolol, ensuring your safety and effectiveness of the medication, and how to reduce the side effects.
Metoprolol is available in metoprolol tartrate and metoprolol succinate, and the dosages are metoprolol 25mg, 50mg, 100mg, and 200mg.

About IBS Treatment Center
===========================
Dr. Stephen Wangen, co-founder and Medical Director of the IBS Treatment Center, and his staff have successfully helped over 10,000 people resolve irritable bowel syndrome and chronic digestive problems since 2005.
Some patients have had IBS symptoms so severe that they spent a considerable amount of time in the hospital. Others are suffering alone at home and are no less frustrated with the impact that it is having on their lives. The thread that tied them all together was that they had never seen an IBS expert (much different than a gastroenterologist), a doctor whose only mission is to help people solve IBS.

Metoprolol is known for its brand Lopressor, Betaloc and Toprol XL is used to treat high blood pressure, also called hypertension, irregular heart rhythm, also called arrhythmia, heart failure, to prevent chest pains caused by angina, and improve the survival after a heart attack. It is also use to prevent migraine headaches.
Metoprolol belongs to a group of medicines called beta-blockers. It works by reducing the work
load of the heart, thus the strain of the heart. it lowers the heart rate and also widens the blood
vessels to reduce blood pressure.
When you must not take metoprolol
Do not take metroprolol if
you are allergic to it or any beta blockers that you might have in the past
or any other ingredients listed at the end of this leaflet. If it’s your first time taking it, you will
only know it after you take it. Symptoms of an allergic reaction may include shortness of
breath, wheezing or difficulty breathing; swelling of the face, lips, tongue or other parts of the
body; rash, itching or hives on the skin, if this happens, send yourself to the hospital
immediately.
more in video
I want to particularly talk about Asthma, taking a beta blocker may trigger your asthma symptoms or make them worse. However Not everybody with asthma is sensitive to these medicines and this is rare with metoprolol. Your doctor may decide to prescribe you a different medicine or increase the dose of your asthma preventer medication.
Medication interaction
Anti-inflammatories such as diclofenac (e.g.
Voltaren Rapid), ibuprofen (e.g. Nurofen), mefenamic acid
(e.g. Ponstan), naproxen (e.g. Naprogesic) which you can
buy without a script from a pharmacy.more in video
How to take it? How much to take it?
Dependent on your condition and what other medication you are taking, the doctor will
prescribe you the appropriate dose.
Doses usually ranges from 12.5mg-200mg. It comes in slow release tablets which is taken
once a day or immediate release which is taken anywhere from 2 to 4 times
Swallow the tablets whole with a full glass of water.
It does not matter if you take metoprolol before or after food.
more in video....
Things to be aware of:
Do not drive a car or operate machinery until you know how this medication
affects you.
• and no alcohol while you are on this medication as it can make you extra drowsy.
• Remember to spend time reading the medication leaflet when you first receive the
medication from your pharmacist. it’s not gonna take you a lot of time, may
10 minutes. If your pharmacist forgets to give it to you, remind them. I will also put
one through a link down in the description box for you.
Diabetes
If you have diabetes you need to take extra care to measure
your blood glucose levels regularly because Beta-blockers
can cause an increase in blood glucose levels, especially when you
first start taking them. This effect usually settles with
time.metoprolol can reduce the warning signs of a low blood
sugar level such as feeling of fast, irregular or strong heartbeats
(palpitations) or tremor.
Side Effects:
• Tiredness, weak and dizziness - if this happen, stop
what you are doing - rest, sit down or lie down until the
dizziness goes away. do not drink alcohol. do not drive,
operate machinates and do anything else that could be
dangerous.
• you might get light headedness as well especially you stand up too quickly, we call
that orthostatic hypotension. so be careful when getting up from a lying
down of sitting position to prevent any falls. get up slowly, if possible hold onto
something as you get up.
• Headache - Headache should only last for 1 week. if it
goes longer than that, or its severe, see your doctor.
things you could do within this week is have lots of rest,
drink plenty of water, avoid drinking alcohol and ask your
pharmacist to recommend a painkiller for you.

Metoprolol (& Beta Blockers) Weird Side Effects (Skin, Gastrointestinal, Psychological)
Metoprolol is a beta blocker used to treat hypertension, anginal chest pain, congestive heart failure and myocardial infarction. It, like other beta blockers, acts to inhibit or “block” the binding of catecholamines (like epinephrine and norepinephrine) to the beta 1 receptor in the heart, reducing heart rate and reducing renin release to ultimately reduce blood pressure. However, due to this mechanism, beta blockers can cause a wide variety of side effects, which we discuss in this lesson.

We're delving into the world of #NSAIDs and how they impact our lovable fuzzballs. 🐕 Get the lowdown on potential risks, the need for liver and kidney check-ups, and learn about natural pain relief alternatives. Make a move towards safer pet care. #PetHealth 💊👩⚕️🌿 Let's keep our pets happy and healthy! 🐾🚀
After Rimadyl became popular, one of my technician's dogs died 2 weeks after using it. In the emergency service, we had dogs coming in with kidney failure, liver failure, gastric ulcers, etc. after using Rimadyl. Alarm bells!
Labrador Retrievers are specifically mentioned as sensitive to Rimadyl/Carprofen.
Galliprant is supposed to have the least amount of side effects, but it is labeled for use in arthritis only.
Metacam can only be given by injection once for cats. Oral Metacam is specifically labeled as NOT for use in cats.* It can cause renal failure. Metacam has been labeled for cats outside the US, but still has a narrow safety margin in cats and signs of overdose may be seen at small overdose levels.
Onsior is only labeled for postop pain for orthopedic surgery or spay/neuter.
The Previcox insert has a list of adverse reactions too long to even put in this caption.
Potential Adverse Reactions for ALL NSAIDs
- Kidney Failure
- Liver Failure
- Seizures
- Gastrointestinal bleeding and perforation. If your animal is on an NSAID, make sure you check their stool! Dark, tarry stools, diarrhea, anorexia, and other GI symptoms can be signs of a serious issue.
✳️ I ALWAYS do lab work before starting an NSAID to make sure liver and kidney function are fine. Then, I do lab work every 3 months while the pet is on the medication.
✳️ Always ASK for the drug inserts from your veterinarian!
✳️ I absolutely minimize the use of NSAIDs with my pets by using alternative therapies and safer OTC options where possible.
❌ Do NOT mix NSAIDs with steroids.
❌ NSAIDs should NOT be given with any other NSAID!! This can kill your pet. You have to have a minimum 7 day wash out period (wait 7 days) before switching.
❌ Do NOT give antacids (like Famotidine) with NSAIDs (there is a potential reaction where the tissue of the stomach swells)

Pain killers are so important but are they safe? More specifically is metacam safe and just how can we go about reducing pain killer side effects in cats?
We used to think cats weren't too affected by pain. Well of course they are and now that our cats are living longer, many are suffering from the effects of chronic pain due to arthritis as well as following surgery or suffering injuries.
Meloxicam is the active ingredient, with Metacam being the most common trade name product used. It is a member of the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug group (NSAIDs).
Metacam's use in cats is highly controversial in some parts of the world, notably the US, while being completely accepted by the majority of vets in other parts, notably Europe and Australasia. This has led to different licensing of the product. In other words the same drug has different dosing regimes depending on where it is being used.
No-one will deny that there are risks with giving any non-steroidal pain killer and cats do appear to be more sensitive to these drugs. It's been shown clearly that giving the highest licensed dose for just 3 days can cause mild changes in the intestines and kidney with 9 days of this treatment dose causing intestinal ulceration and peritonitis.
The fact of the matter is though that for long term treatment, the licenced dose is 6 times less than this single treatment dose. The additional benefit of meloxicam being available as a liquid is that it gives us the ability to gradually reduce the dose give to the lowest effective dose. But how do we know that this is safe?
there have been several studies looking at this with a couple of studies in Australia that looked at safety in both otherwise healthy older cats as well as older cats with existing kidney disease which concluded that rather than be dangerous, long term meloxicam may actually delay the worsening of disease in cats with otherwise stable chronic kidney failure.
NSAIDs offer our cats one of the best chances of a pain free life. Be that during the recovery from surgery, getting over a ligament or muscular injury or living with arthritis long term. Yes, there are alternative pain killers but none of them are proven to work as well in cats, especially long term and in most instances they themselves are actually not licensed for this use. Pain has many detrimental effects, it has a massive impact on a cats quality of life and should not be ignored.
Of course we don't want to use any drug irresponsibly and there are a number of actions we can take to minimize the risk of any side-effects.
- Blood testing
- stop if vomiting or diarrhoea
- Stop if your cat appears depressed, becomes unwell or stops eating or drinking
- Do not give a higher dose than your vet has prescribed
- Do not give at the same time as steroids or any other NSAID
- Don't use human pain killers unless specifically advised to by your vet (and never ever give your cat paracetamol).
- Do contact your vet promptly if you have any concerns
- If your cat is fat then give a dose approriate to their ideal weight rather than their actual weight.
- Use other management and treatment strategies for arthritis and other chronic pain conditions to reduce the dose of NSAIDs needed to keep your pet pain free. This includes the use of different types of additional pain killers.
- Do follow post-operative instructions fully to minimise pain and inflammation to allow a shorter course or a lower dose of medication to be used.

Mechanism of Action:
The mechanism of action of meloxicam, like that of other NSAIDs, may be related to prostaglandin synthetase (cyclo-oxygenase) inhibition which is involved in the
initial steps of the arachidonic acid cascade, resulting in the reduced formation of prostaglandins, thromboxanes, and prostacyclins. It is not completely understood how
reduced synthesis of these compounds results in therapeutic efficacy.
Do not take Meloxicam if
You are allergic to meloxicam or any of the other ingredients of this medicine. An allergic reaction may include rash, itching, swelling of face, lips, or
hands/feet, or breathing difficulties.
You are in the last three months (third trimester) of your pregnancy or breast-feeding.
You have previously had an allergic reaction, to other NSAIDs or to acetylsalicylic
acid (a medicine used in pain, inflammation, and fever).
You have suffered from asthma-like wheezing, swelling of the skin, or hives (urticaria)
after taking NSAIDs in the past.
You have a blocked nose or difficulty in breathing through your nose after taking
NSAIDs or aspirin in the past. These may be due to a fleshy growth in the nose called
nasal polyps.
You have an ulcer of the stomach or intestine (commonly called peptic ulcer), or have
had them repeatedly in the past.
You have bleeding in your stomach or intestine (gastrointestinal bleeding), any other
bleeding disorder or had bleeding inside the brain (cerebrovascular bleeding).
You have had gastrointestinal bleeding or perforation with the use of NSAID therapy
at any time in the past
You have severe problems with your liver
You have severe problems with your kidney(s) and are not on dialysis
You suffer from severe heart failure (heart failure is a condition where your heart fails
to pump blood strongly enough to supply all the blood needed throughout the body).
Children and adolescents under the age of 16 years must not take Meloxicam tablets.

In this video I review meloxicam. A prescription anti-inflammatory medication used to treat arthritis and arthritis pain. I answer 12 of the most common questions I get including dosing, side effects, warnings and more.
30 Days to Better Health (Free Course): https://curtis-alexander.com/
Meloxicam is a prescription non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) used for different types of arthritis pain, including osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. Typically, you take it by mouth once daily. It comes as a capsule, tablet, or liquid. It's also available as an injection that's given by a healthcare provider in a hospital setting. Like all NSAIDs, meloxicam can raise the risk for stomach bleeds.

Here are the benefits of magnesium glycinate for anxiety:
1) Relaxes Muscles
2) Increases GABA
3) Decreases Cortisol
4) Reduces Inflammation
5) Supports Healthy Sleep
Potential side effect of magnesium glycinate:
1) Magnesium glycinate is very relaxing and can make you sleepy, so it might not be the best option for you if you experience a lot of anxiety in the morning or afternoon.
If you do experience anxiety in the morning, I would recommend using magnesium malate instead, or a supplement that contains both magnesium malate and magnesium glycinate.

Let’s talk about the unique benefits of magnesium glycinate. Magnesium is involved in over 300 different enzymes and comes in a lot of different forms.
Magnesium glycinate is a combination of magnesium and the amino acid glycine. This combination increases absorption in the intestine. Magnesium oxide, sulfate, carbonate, and hydroxide are all poorly absorbed.
Magnesium glycinate is also very gentle on your stomach and is less likely to cause diarrhea, like other forms of magnesium can.
Top benefits of magnesium glycinate:
• It promotes overall relaxation and muscle relaxation
• It supports sleep and may help with insomnia
• It improves energy during the day
• It supports healthy blood pressure
• It regulates calcium
• It reduces the risk of kidney stones
• It increases insulin sensitivity and promotes healthy blood sugar
• It may help with migraines
• It may help with depression and anxiety
• It may help reduce stress
To increase the absorption even more, find a magnesium glycinate supplement that also contains vitamin D3 and vitamin B6.
You can take magnesium glycinate with or without food. The best time to take this form of magnesium is right before bed. However, taking it at other times of the day won’t make you feel tired, just relaxed. Consider taking between 100 mg to 400 mg daily, depending on the severity of the issue.
Taking high amounts of magnesium glycinate over time may lead to slightly lower blood pressure or contribute to diarrhea. Also, keep in mind that magnesium glycinate may interfere with certain medications.
To get more magnesium in your diet, start consuming more leafy green vegetables.
