💊 Bismuth subsalicylate acts as an antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and antisecretory agent. It binds enterotoxins and inhibits their action, reducing intestinal secretions and inflammation.
💊 Bismuth subsalicylate (e.g., Pepto-Bismol) is primarily used for acute diarrhea, including traveler’s diarrhea, and as part of H. pylori eradication regimens.
💊 Bismuth can react with sulfur in saliva and GI tract, producing black-colored tongue and stools — a harmless and reversible effect.
💊 Chronic use or overdose can lead to salicylate toxicity, with symptoms like tinnitus, confusion, and metabolic acidosis.
💊 Like other salicylates, bismuth subsalicylate is contraindicated during pregnancy (especially third trimester) and in children due to Reye’s syndrome risk.
💊 Bismuth subsalicylate contains salicylate, which can increase bleeding risk when combined with anticoagulants like warfarin.

Many thousands of men around the world are missing out on a life-extending prostate cancer drug that's available free in some countries.
Although not a cure, Abiraterone can help stop prostate cancer spreading to other parts of the body.
Recently one drug trial showed that Abiraterone could benefit a larger group of men with earlier stage tumours that hadn't yet started to spread.
The medicine works by lowering testosterone production in the body which can fuel some cancer cell growth. The study showed it could halve the risk of the cancer spreading and significantly reduce the chance of death six years on from diagnosis in that group.
However differences in national health care systems mean that while in some countries men are being given the treatment, many others are missing out.
The UK illustrates this health inequality. In England and Northern Ireland, the state national health service will only provide it for men with very advanced disease, when other treatments have failed. However in the neighbouring UK nations of Scotland and Wales the drug is more widely available.
Fiona Bruce presents BBC News at Six reporting by health editor Hugh Pym.

PCRI’s Executive Director, Mark Scholz, MD, discusses the use of hormone therapy for men with Azure (High-Risk) prostate cancer. He covers why it is necessary for men with high-risk disease and talks about the three categories of hormone therapy.
0:28 Men with Azure are generally given hormone therapy because there is a higher risk of spread outside the prostate. Hormone therapy is a systemic treatment that acts on the entire body, not just the prostate. It is effective, and its side effects are reversible. Compared to chemotherapy, another systemic treatment, it is more effective and has far fewer side effects.
1:23 The three categories of hormone therapy. Hormone therapy, also known as testosterone inactivating pharmaceuticals (TIP) comes in three different strengths. The first and least potent category of hormone therapy is the “anti-androgens.” Common examples of these drugs are Casodex and Nilutamide. The second category and the most commonly used type of hormone therapy are the “LHRH Agonists” drugs such as Lupron, Eligard, and Trelstar. The last category is the second generation hormonal agents that operate differently than the previous categories. Examples of these are Erleada, Xtandi, and Zytiga. You don’t want more hormone therapy than what is necessary because of added side effects.
2:43 Hormone therapy for the different subtypes of Azure. Each subtype of azure requires different amounts of hormone therapy. High-risk prostate cancer should be treated with a combination of radiation, seed implants, and hormone therapy, but the amount of hormone therapy can differ depending on the subtype. Low-Azure only requires 4-6 months of Lupron and Casodex. Basic-Azure needs between 18-24 months for optimal cure rates. And High azure needs 18-24 months possibly with the addition of a second generation TIP such as Erleada, Xtandi, or Zytiga.
4:12 Summary. The amount of hormone therapy depends on the subtype of prostate cancer. Many studies have shown that Low-Azure only requires a short course of hormone therapy and High-Azure can benefit from adding second generation hormone therapy.

Palivizumab Uses, Side effects, Review, RSV, Synagis Injection
Palivizumab, sold under the brand name Synagis, is a monoclonal antibody produced by recombinant DNA technology used to prevent severe disease caused by respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infections.
What is palivizumab used for?
Descriptions. Palivizumab injection is used to prevent serious lung infection in children and babies caused by respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). It belongs to a group of medicines known as immunizing agents. This medicine works by giving your body antibodies to protect it against RSV infection.
What is palivizumab injection?
Palivizumab injection is used to help prevent respiratory syncytial virus (RSV; common virus that can cause serious lung infections) in children less than 24 months old who are at high risk for getting RSV. Children at high risk for RSV include those who were born prematurely or have certain heart or lung diseases.
Is palivizumab an antiviral?
Palivizumab, an antiviral monoclonal antibody against respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) F protein, has significantly reduced RSV hospitalizations in premature infants and infants with chronic lung disease or congenital heart disease.

Is palivizumab an antibody?
Palivizumab, a highly potent RSV-neutralizing monoclonal antibody (Mab), has been licensed in 1998 for prophylactic use to prevent RSV associated hospitalizations in high-risk infants.
How much does palivizumab cost?
Results: The mean cost of palivizumab per dose ranged from $1661 for infants younger than 6 months of age to $2584 for children in their second year of life.
Is palivizumab effective?
Palivizumab is an RSV-specific monoclonal antibody licensed for the prevention of serious lower respiratory tract infection (LRTI) caused by RSV in high-risk children. Several prospective clinical trials have demonstrated an efficacy of 45%–82% against RSV-related hospitalizations in high-risk infants.
What age is palivizumab given?
How does SYNAGIS help? SYNAGIS gives babies who are born prematurely (at or before 35 weeks, and who are 6 months of age or less at the beginning of RSV season) the infection-fighting antibodies they lack, helping protect their vulnerable lungs from RSV.
Can honey help with RSV?
For children over the age of 6, you can give cough medicines, but they have not been proven to be helpful. Honey has been shown to help coughs but should not be given to children under 1 year because of the risk of botulism. Keep your child away from smoke.
What is palivizumab prophylaxis?
Palivizumab prophylaxis reduces hospitalization due to respiratory syncytial virus in young children with hemodynamically significant congenital heart disease.
Is Synagis a biologic?
Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is the main reason US children under five end up in the hospital. For children born too early or those with weak immune systems, the virus can cause severe lung inflammation and pneumonia.
How long is Synagis good for?
Your child's healthcare provider will give you detailed instructions on when SYNAGIS will be given. SYNAGIS is needed every 28-30 days during the RSV season. Each injection of SYNAGIS helps protect your child from severe RSV disease for about 1 month.
How do you pronounce palivizumab?
Phonetic spelling of palivizumab
palivizum-ab.
PAL-i-VIZ-ue-mab.
PAL-i-VIZ-oo-mab.
pal-i-VIZ-u-mab.
pal-ih-VIZ-yoo-mab.
What are the side effects of Synagis?
SIDE EFFECTS: Fever, cough, earache, runny nose, or pain/redness/swelling at the injection site may occur. If any of these effects persist or worsen, contact the doctor or pharmacist promptly.
Is palivizumab a live vaccine?
It is not a true vaccine (active immunisation), as it does not stimulate your baby's body to produce its own antibodies when they come into contact with that virus in the future. How is it given? Synagis is given as an intramuscular injection into the muscle of the thigh.
Why don t all kids get Synagis?
Since RSV infections are so common and the symptoms can be so severe, why doesn't everyone get Synagis? One of the reasons is that it is the youngest infants, especially if they were born premature, are most at risk of the serious complications of RSV infections. 5 The other reason is the cost.

A new vaccine is out for the Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) for those age 60 and over, called "Arexvy". Many patients have been asking me about whether they should get it, so I dug into the evidence and produced this video for folks to have some further background understanding of what RSV is and how the vaccine works. Stick around to the end for my thoughts on whether or not someone should get the vaccine!

Did you know while hospitalization is uncommon, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is the leading cause of hospitalization for babies under 1? RSV season is typically fall – spring but can vary by local areas and today I'm sharing about a preventative antibody which can help protect against severe RSV lung infections. I'm joined by Shawn Johnson East and Dr. Natalie Barnett, Vice President of Clinical Research at Nanit, to discuss the importance of RSV protection for babies. They share personal experiences, including Shawn's family's journey with RSV, and offer expert insights on how parents can help protect their little ones during RSV season.
They join me to discuss:
• How RSV is common and can be a serious virus for infants.
• Beyfortus (nirsevimab-alip) 50mg and 100mg Injection, a preventative antibody that helps give babies an extra layer of protection against severe RSV lung infection for babies under age 1 born during or entering their first RSV season and certain kids up to 24 months. Your child should not take Beyfortus if your child has a history of serious allergic reactions to nirsevimab-alip or any of the ingredients in Beyfortus. Beyfortus may not protect all children.
• That parenting can be scary but navigating the journey with monitors like Nanit, and knowledge of prevention measures for RSV can be empowering.
