Sildenafil, also known as Viagra, is a phosphodiesterase-5 inhibitor used in the treatment of erectile dysfunction.
It is also used to treat pulmonary arterial hypertension.
In this video, I will discuss the common adverse effects of sildenafil.
Sildenafil is well-tolerated by most individuals.
Mild side effects may include the following.
Gastrointestinal problems such as dyspepsia.
Headache.
Flushing.
Nasal congestion, and nasopharyngitis.
One of the more serious adverse effects is prolonged, painful erection, lasting more than six hours.
Patients are advised to seek immediate medical attention in such instances.
If left untreated, it can lead to permanent penile tissue damage.
Another rare, but one of the serious side effects is visual disturbances, which can lead to sudden loss of vision.
Patients should discontinue the drug and seek immediate medical attention in such situations to prevent permanent visual loss.
Sudden hearing loss is another serious adverse effect that should be addressed immediately.

In this episode, I discuss a medication known as lorazepam (Ativan). This benzodiazepine prescription medication is most commonly known for its use in treating anxiety but in this video, I go over some other uses such as epilepsy, insomnia, and alcohol withdrawal. It's important to start on a lower dose and increase over time under the instruction of your physician. The most common side effect of lorazepam is the sedating effect which can happen in up to 16% of patients. I discuss some other side effects in the video.
My book is now available! It discusses my experience with Bipolar Disorder.

Gregory Steinberg, professor of medicine at McMaster University, talks about a McMaster-led study that found that metformin induces the expression and secretion of a protein called growth differentiating factor 15, or GDF15. This discovery opens a number of avenues of research as scientists have been working to understand how a drug taken for diabetes may have beneficial effects on aging and other diseases. The study results were published in Nature Metabolism.
