Botox - it’s a popular lunchtime tweakment we’ve all become very familiar with.
Many celebrities have long been fans and devotees of the anti-ageing injections, including Simon Cowell, Kim Kardashian, Katie Price, Molly-Mae Hague and Geordie Shore’s Chloe Ferry.
But just how safe really is it? Here, we spoke to mum-of-three Janine Brockway, as she explained that she reluctantly quit Botox when she realised the jabs were causing heart palpitations and panic attacks.
Not only this, but Dr Saniyya Mahmood, Medical Director of Aesthetica Medical Clinic, also revealed the serious side effects of the cosmetic injections that many aren't aware of, including infection, cysts, brow and eyelid droop, muscle weakness and asymmetry.
While Botox can offer remarkable results in the quest for a youthful appearance, it's crucial to remember that informed decisions are the safest ones.
So, before you take that step, ensure you've done your homework and consulted with a qualified professional to make the most informed choice for your beauty journey.

I'm John Barbieri, MD, a board-certified dermatologist and acne expert at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School. In this video we will discuss how to prevent flaring and purging, a common Accutane (isotretinoin) side effect. Although often thought of as a difficult treatment, it doesn’t have to be this way! However, isotretinoin is not the right treatment for everyone, so make sure to discuss with a healthcare professional before considering whether to take isotretinoin.

NSAIDs stands for non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. They are medications that treat inflammation in the body but are not steroids. These are drugs like ibuprofen or Motrin, naproxen or Aleve and celecoxib or Celebrex.
There’s been a growing body research showing that people who are depressed have higher levels of inflammatory chemicals in the body. Also people with infection and autoimmune disorders have an increased risk of developing depression.
Autoimmune means your body forms antibodies to your own tissues in your body. Examples of autoimmune disorders are rheumatoid arthritis, Lupus and multiple sclerosis. Even psoriasis, which is a skin disorder, is autoimmune. So groups of people with these disorders have been studied and we’ve seen a higher incidence of depression in these groups of people.
There was a 2019 study that analyzed several randomized control trials using anti-inflammatory medications to treat depression both as an add on agent and as the only medication used – we call this monotherapy. The results showed improvement in depression with the use of NSAIDs, with celecoxib rising to the top as the one used the most. The dose used was 200mg bid.
Here’s how the drug works. NSAIDs block the enzyme, cox-2 that makes prostaglandins. Prostaglandins are chemicals that contribute to arthritis pain, fever, and pain caused by inflammation. With lower concentrations of prostaglandins, you have less inflammation, less pain and less depression. Celebrex blocks the enzyme that makes prostaglandins, so you get lower concentrations of prostaglandins.
We don’t have a complete understanding of how inflammation causes depression or vice versa. It’s not clear which comes first. So understanding this is a work in progress. And this is one reason using anti-inflammatory medications isn’t a mainstream recommendation.
Side effects
NSAIDs increase the risk of gastrointestinal bleeding. And this is something that can happen anytime during the use of the medication and not just with chronic use. Even if you don’t get bleeding, you can get pretty serious stomach upset.
Also, many of the later NSAIDs like Celebrex and Vioxx cause an increase in strokes and heart attacks. In fact Vioxx was taken off the market in 2004 because of this problem. Celebrex has remained on the market but it and other NSAIDs have a black box warning about the risk of stroke and heart attack.
A black box warning is issued by the FDA and required to go on the package information. It’s a way to emphasize serious drug side effects to insure that you are informed of the risks.

Yaz Tablet | Uses, Side Effects, Dosage, Review
Yaz is a hormonal contraceptive agent that combines drospirenone and ethinyl estradiol. It is primarily used to prevent pregnancy but also has other benefits such as managing acne in females over 14 years and alleviating symptoms of premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD). The medication works by suppressing ovulation, altering the uterine environment, and thickening cervical mucus, making it difficult for sperm to fertilize an egg. Despite its effectiveness, Yaz can lead to side effects such as unusual spotting, nausea, breast tenderness, and headaches. More serious side effects may include mood changes, severe headaches, and symptoms indicative of blood clots or liver issues. It's essential to consult a healthcare provider before starting Yaz, especially for individuals with a history of breast cancer, liver, kidney, or heart problems, or those who smoke and are over 35 years of age. Regular health monitoring is recommended to mitigate potential risks. While Yaz can effectively manage hormonal acne and PMDD, it is crucial to adhere to prescribed dosages and report any adverse reactions promptly.
