- This is lesson n# 63 in "A DRUG IN BRIEF" Series. In this video I'm gonna discuss almost all you need to know about Carvedilol ( Coreg ): What is Carvedilol Used For, Dosage, Side Effects, Precautions and mechanism of action

- In less than 5 minutes you'll learn:

- What is Carvedilol ( Coreg )?

- Carvedilol is a nonselective beta blocker, with concurrent alpha 1 blocking actions
- Carvedilol reversibly binds to beta adrenergic receptors on cardiac myocytes. Inhibition of these receptors prevents a response to the sympathetic nervous system, leading to decreased heart rate and contractility. This action is beneficial in heart failure patients where the sympathetic nervous system is activated as a compensatory mechanism.

- Carvedilol blockade of alpha-1 receptors causes vasodilation of blood vessels. This inhibition leads to decreased peripheral vascular resistance and an antihypertensive effect. There is no reflex tachycardia response due to carvedilol blockade of beta-1 receptors on the heart

- It is available as 3.125, 6.25, 12.5, and 25 mg tablets, and also available as 10, 20, 40 and 80 mg extended release capsules.

- Carvedilol is used to treat Hypertension and heart failure. It is also used after a heart attack to improve the chance of survival if your heart is not pumping well. Lowering high blood pressure helps prevent strokes, heart attacks, and kidney problems.

The Ultimate Guide to Cefdinir: What You Need to Know About This Antibiotic
The Ultimate Guide to Cefdinir: What You Need to Know About This Antibiotic Side Effects 2 Views • 5 months ago

Antibiotics are a vital component in the arsenal of modern medicine. They are used to treat bacterial infections and have saved countless lives over the years. Cefdinir is one such antibiotic that has gained popularity in recent times. However, not many people are familiar with this medication, its uses, and potential side effects. That's where this ultimate guide to Cefdinir comes in. In this comprehensive guide, we will take you through everything you need to know about Cefdinir, including its mechanism of action, indications, dosages, and potential side effects. We will also explore the differences between Cefdinir and other antibiotics, such as amoxicillin and azithromycin. So, whether you are a healthcare professional or a patient looking for information on Cefdinir, this guide is your one-stop resource for all things Cefdinir. So, let's dive in and explore the world of Cefdinir together!.
How does cefdinir work?.
Cefdinir belongs to a class of antibiotics known as cephalosporins. It works by disrupting the bacterial cell wall, which leads to the death of the bacteria. Cefdinir is effective against a wide range of bacterial infections, including strep throat, sinus infections, and pneumonia. One of the advantages of Cefdinir is that it has a broad spectrum of activity, meaning that it can target a wide range of bacterial species.
Cefdinir has a longer half-life than other cephalosporins, which means that it can be taken once or twice a day. This makes it a convenient option for patients who have difficulty adhering to a strict medication regimen. However, it's important to note that Cefdinir should only be used to treat bacterial infections and not viral infections, such as the common cold or the flu.
Cefdinir is available in both capsule and liquid form. The liquid form is often prescribed to children who have difficulty swallowing pills. The dosage and duration of treatment will depend on the type and severity of the infection, as well as the patient's age and overall health.
When is cefdinir prescribed?.
Cefdinir is prescribed to treat a variety of bacterial infections, including:
• Strep throat: Strep throat is a bacterial infection that affects the throat and tonsils. It is most common in children but can also occur in adults. Symptoms include sore throat, fever, and swollen lymph nodes.
• Sinus infections: Sinus infections occur when the sinuses become inflamed due to a bacterial infection. Symptoms include headache, facial pain, and congestion.
• Pneumonia: Pneumonia is an infection of the lungs that can be caused by bacteria, viruses, or fungi. Symptoms include cough, fever, and difficulty breathing.
• Skin infections: Cefdinir can also be used to treat skin infections, such as cellulitis and impetigo.
It's important to note that Cefdinir should only be used to treat bacterial infections and not viral infections, such as the common cold or the flu.
Dosage and administration of cefdinir.
The dosage of Cefdinir will depend on the type and severity of the infection, as well as the patient's age and overall health. The recommended dosage for adults is 300mg taken once or twice a day. For children, the dosage will depend on their weight and age.
Cefdinir can be taken with or without food. However, taking it with food can help reduce the risk of stomach upset. It's important to take the medication as prescribed and to complete the full course of treatment, even if you start to feel better before the medication is finished.
If you miss a dose of Cefdinir, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it's almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.
Possible side effects of cefdinir.
Like all medications, Cefdinir can cause side effects. The most common side effects include:
• Diarrhea.
• Nausea.
• Vomiting.
• Stomach upset.
• Headache.
• Dizziness.
These side effects are usually mild and will go away on their own. However, if they persist or become more severe, contact your healthcare provider.

Ceftriaxone (Rocephin) – Side Effects, Uses, Mechanism of Action, Dosage, Interactions, Warnings | What is ceftriaxone used for?
Ceftriaxone, a broad-spectrum antibiotic belonging to the cephalosporin class, is commonly administered via injection and is known by brand names like Ceftrisol Plus and Rocephin. It's utilized to treat various bacterial infections, including respiratory tract infections, sexually transmitted infections like gonorrhea, intra-abdominal infections, meningitis, surgical prophylaxis, Lyme disease, pediatric infections, Salmonella and typhoid fever, and as empirical therapy. Its mechanism of action involves interfering with bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins, leading to cell death. However, it's crucial to be aware of its side effects, ranging from gastrointestinal disturbances and injection site reactions to serious allergic reactions and blood disorders. Dosage varies depending on factors like infection type and patient characteristics, with warnings regarding allergic reactions, renal impairment, biliary effects, and potential interactions with other medications.

Meningitis (infection of the membranes that surround the brain and spinal cord), gonorrhoea (a sexually transmitted disease), pelvic inflammatory disease (infection of the female reproductive organs that may cause infertility), and infections of the lungs, ears, skin, urinary tract, blood, bones, joints, and abdomen are among the infections caused by bacteria that are treated with ceftriaxone injection. In order to avoid infections that can arise following a certain type of surgery, ceftriaxone injection is occasionally administered beforehand. Ceftriaxone injection belongs to the group of drugs known as cephalosporin antibiotics. It eliminates bacteria to operate.

Ceftriaxone Explained in 50 Seconds! 💉 Uses, Side Effects & Nursing Role Must-Know Antibiotic!

📢 Welcome to another powerful 1 minute nursing breakdown! In this video, we dive deep into Ceftriaxone, one of the most commonly used and life-saving broad-spectrum antibiotics in hospital settings. Whether you're a nursing student, pharmacist, doctor, or healthcare professional, this short but high-impact video will give you the essential knowledge you need to understand Ceftriaxone (Rocephin).
💊 What is Ceftriaxone?
Ceftriaxone is a third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic used to treat a wide range of gram-positive and gram-negative bacterial infections, including:
• Pneumonia
• Meningitis
• Sepsis
• Gonorrhea
• Urinary tract infections (UTIs)
• Skin and bone infections
💉 How is Ceftriaxone Administered?
It is usually given intravenously (IV) or intramuscularly (IM) and is typically dosed once daily due to its long half-life. It's NOT taken orally.
⚠️ Common Side Effects Include:
• Pain at the injection site
• Diarrhea
• Nausea or vomiting
• Rash or allergic reactions
• Superinfections like C. difficile colitis
• Elevated liver enzymes
🧠 Nursing Responsibilities:
• Always check for penicillin or cephalosporin allergies before administration.
• Monitor for signs of anaphylaxis or hypersensitivity.
• Check renal and liver function tests, especially in long-term use.
• Do not mix with calcium-containing IV solutions in neonates (risk of fatal lung and kidney damage).
• Educate the patient about completing the full course of antibiotics—even if they feel better.

Ceftriaxone is part of a group of antibiotics called cephalosporin. It is a third-generation broad-spectrum antibiotic, which can be used to treat infectious with several types of bacteria. For example:
- Infections of the respiratory tract, like a pneumonia or an exacerbation of COPD.
- Infections of the skin, like a wound infection
- Infections of the urogenital tract, like urinary tract infections or syphilis.
- Gastrointestinal infections, like a bile duct infection.
- And it can be used preemptively before or after surgery.

What is the correct dosage?
The precise dose will depend on your specific indication of use, the side effect you might experience and the severity of your symptoms. Therefore always use the precise amount and frequency your doctor prescribed you.
- So in general your doctor might prescribe a dose of 0,5 - 4 grams of ceftriaxone 1x per day, ranging from a treatment duration of 1 day up to 14 days.

What are the side-effects?
- Common (1-10%): diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, inflammation of your stomach, skin rash, allergic reaction and changes in your blood values.
- Uncommon (0.1-1%): headache, dizziness and vertigo.
- Rare (0.01-0.1%): fever, chills, anaphylactic reactions, elevation of liver enzymes and genital yeast infection.
- Very rare (0.01%): gastrointestinal haemorrhage, inflammation of the pancreas and blood clotting abnormalities.

Safety:
First of all there are no limitations for this drug regarding the usage of alcohol or driving a car.
However, ceftriaxone can have interactions with other drugs your are taking. Therefore always discuss this with your prescribing doctor.
Lastly, ceftriaxone can usually be used safely when pregnant or when breastfeeding, but again discuss this with your personal doctor.

Cefuroxime Axetil: The Antibiotic You Need to Know About
Cefuroxime Axetil: The Antibiotic You Need to Know About Side Effects 2 Views • 5 months ago

In a world where bacteria and viruses are constantly evolving, finding the right antibiotic can be a challenging task. However, when it comes to treating a variety of bacterial infections, Cefuroxime Axetil is the antibiotic you need to know about. This powerful medication is highly effective against a wide range of bacterial infections, including respiratory tract infections, skin infections, and urinary tract infections. Cefuroxime Axetil works by inhibiting the growth and spread of bacteria, helping your body fight off the infection and get back to full health. As a skilled assistant who specializes in digital marketing, I understand the importance of reliable information when it comes to healthcare. In this video, we'll dive into the benefits of Cefuroxime Axetil, its mechanism of action, and how it can help you recover from bacterial infections quickly and effectively.
How does Cefuroxime Axetil work?.
Cefuroxime Axetil is an antibiotic that belongs to the cephalosporin class of antibiotics. It works by inhibiting the growth and spread of bacteria by interfering with the cell wall synthesis. The cell wall is an essential component of bacteria that provides structural support and protects the bacterial cell from the environment. Cefuroxime Axetil binds to specific proteins on the cell wall, preventing the bacteria from building a strong cell wall. This results in the bacteria becoming weaker, making it easier for the body's immune system to fight off the infection.
Cefuroxime Axetil is a prodrug, which means that it is inactive until it is metabolized by the body. After oral administration, the medication is rapidly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract and converted to its active form, cefuroxime. Cefuroxime is then distributed throughout the body, including the site of infection, where it helps fight off the bacteria.
What conditions can Cefuroxime Axetil treat?.
Cefuroxime Axetil is a broad-spectrum antibiotic that is effective against a variety of bacterial infections. It is commonly used to treat respiratory tract infections, including pneumonia, bronchitis, and sinusitis. Cefuroxime Axetil is also effective against skin infections, such as cellulitis and impetigo, and urinary tract infections.
Additionally, Cefuroxime Axetil is used to prevent infections in people undergoing certain surgical procedures, such as abdominal, gynecologic, and orthopedic surgeries. It is also used to prevent infections in people who are at risk of developing bacterial infections due to weakened immune systems.
Dosage and administration of Cefuroxime Axetil.
Cefuroxime Axetil is available in tablet form and is typically taken two times a day with food. The dosage and duration of treatment depend on the type and severity of the infection. Your doctor will determine the appropriate dosage and duration of treatment based on your medical history, age, weight, and other factors.
It is important to take Cefuroxime Axetil exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Do not stop taking the medication or change the dosage without first consulting your doctor. If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule.
Cefuroxime Axetil side effects.
Like all medications, Cefuroxime Axetil can cause side effects. The most common side effects of Cefuroxime Axetil include diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, and headache. These side effects are usually mild and go away on their own within a few days.
Less common side effects of Cefuroxime Axetil include allergic reactions, such as hives, itching, and swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat. If you experience any of these symptoms, seek medical attention immediately. Other rare side effects of Cefuroxime Axetil include liver problems, anemia, and low platelet counts.

Precautions when using Cefuroxime Axetil.
Before taking Cefuroxime Axetil, tell your doctor if you are allergic to cephalosporin antibiotics or have a history of liver disease. Cefuroxime Axetil should be used with caution in people with a history of kidney disease, as it can cause kidney problems in some people.

Pharmacology of Cefuroxime ; Pharmacokinetics, Mechanism of action, Uses, Effects, Antibiotics
Pharmacology of Cefuroxime ; Pharmacokinetics, Mechanism of action, Uses, Effects, Antibiotics Side Effects 2 Views • 5 months ago

Cefuroxime is a second-generation cephalosporin antibiotic used to treat a variety of bacterial infections. Here are some key points about its pharmacology:

Mechanism of Action
Cefuroxime works by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis. It binds to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) on the bacterial cell wall, inhibiting the final transpeptidation step of peptidoglycan synthesis2. This leads to bacterial cell lysis due to ongoing activity of cell wall autolytic enzymes.

Spectrum of Activity
Cefuroxime is effective against a range of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, including Streptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae, Escherichia coli, Proteus mirabilis, Neisseria gonorrhoeae, and Moraxella catarrhalis.

Pharmacokinetics
Absorption: Rapidly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract.

Distribution: Widely distributed in body tissues and fluids, including bronchial secretions, synovial and pericardial fluid, kidneys, heart, liver, bone, and bile.

Metabolism: Cefuroxime axetil (oral form) is hydrolyzed in the intestinal mucosa and blood to cefuroxime.

Elimination: The elimination half-life is approximately 1 to 2 hours in adults, but can be prolonged in cases of renal impairment.

Excretion: Approximately 66% to 100% of the dose is excreted unchanged in the urine.

Dosage and Administration
Adults: Typically, the dose is 250-500 mg orally every 12 hours or 750 mg intravenously/ intramuscularly every 8 hours.

Children: Dosage is adjusted based on body weight and the specific infection being treated.

Side Effects
Common side effects include gastrointestinal disturbances (nausea, vomiting, diarrhea), headache, and dizziness. Rarely, it can cause allergic reactions, including rash and anaphylaxis2.

Drug Interactions
Cefuroxime can interact with other nephrotoxic drugs, increasing the risk of kidney damage. It should be used cautiously with these medications1.

Indications
Cefuroxime is indicated for the treatment of infections such as acute bacterial exacerbation of chronic bronchitis, acute bacterial otitis media, sinusitis, skin infections, urinary tract infections, gonorrhea, and early Lyme disease

Celecoxib 200 mg Capsule: Benefits, Side Effects, and Usage Tips
Celecoxib 200 mg Capsule: Benefits, Side Effects, and Usage Tips Side Effects 2 Views • 5 months ago

What is Celecoxib 200 mg capsule?.
Celecoxib 200 mg capsule is a medication commonly used to treat pain and inflammation. It belongs to the class of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and works by inhibiting the COX2 enzyme, which plays a crucial role in the production of prostaglandins – substances that contribute to pain and inflammation.
Celecoxib is available in the form of capsules, with each capsule containing 200 mg of the active ingredient. It is typically prescribed for conditions such as osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and acute pain. Celecoxib can provide relief by reducing pain, inflammation, and swelling, allowing individuals to lead a more comfortable and active lifestyle.
It is important to note that Celecoxib 200 mg capsules should only be taken under the guidance of a healthcare professional. They will determine the appropriate dosage and duration of treatment based on your individual needs and medical history. Now that we have an understanding of what Celecoxib 200 mg capsules are, let's explore their benefits.
Benefits of Celecoxib 200 mg capsule.
Celecoxib 200 mg capsules offer a range of benefits for those suffering from pain and inflammation. Here are some of the key advantages of this medication:.
Effective pain management:. Celecoxib is known for its ability to provide effective pain relief. By inhibiting the COX2 enzyme, it reduces the production of prostaglandins responsible for pain and inflammation. This can result in improved mobility and quality of life for individuals dealing with conditions like arthritis or acute pain.
Reduced inflammation and swelling:. In addition to pain relief, Celecoxib also helps reduce inflammation and swelling. This can be particularly beneficial for individuals with conditions like rheumatoid arthritis, where joint inflammation is a primary symptom. By addressing inflammation, Celecoxib promotes healing and reduces discomfort.
Preservation of gastrointestinal health:. Unlike traditional NSAIDs, Celecoxib has a lower risk of causing gastrointestinal complications such as ulcers and bleeding. This makes it a preferred choice for individuals who may be at a higher risk of developing such complications or those who have a history of gastrointestinal issues.
Convenience and ease of use:. Celecoxib 200 mg capsules are available in a convenient capsule form, making them easy to swallow and administer.
These benefits make Celecoxib 200 mg capsules a popular choice for individuals seeking effective pain and inflammation management. However, it is essential to be aware of the potential side effects associated with this medication.
Common side effects of Celecoxib 200 mg capsule.
While Celecoxib 200 mg capsules offer numerous benefits, it is crucial to be aware of the potential side effects that may occur. Although not everyone experiences side effects, it is essential to monitor your body's response to the medication and consult your healthcare professional if any adverse effects occur. Common side effects of Celecoxib 200 mg capsules may include:.
Gastrointestinal issues:. Although Celecoxib has a lower risk of gastrointestinal complications compared to traditional NSAIDs, it can still cause stomach pain, indigestion, and diarrhea in some individuals. It is recommended to take the medication with food or milk to minimize the risk of these side effects. If symptoms persist or worsen, it is important to consult your healthcare professional.
Cardiovascular risks:. Celecoxib, like other NSAIDs, may increase the risk of cardiovascular events such as heart attack or stroke, especially when used for prolonged periods or at high doses. It is crucial to discuss your medical history, including any cardiovascular conditions or risk factors, with your healthcare professional before starting Celecoxib treatment.
Allergic reactions:. In rare cases, Celecoxib can cause allergic reactions such as hives, rash, itching, or swelling. If you experience any of these symptoms, seek immediate medical attention.
Liver and kidney problems:. Celecoxib may rarely cause liver or kidney problems, including abnormal liver function tests or kidney damage. It is important to monitor liver and kidney function regularly while taking this medication and report any unusual symptoms to your healthcare professional.
