Citalopram, sold under the brand name Celexa among others, is an antidepressant of the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) class.[5][6] It is used to treat major depressive disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder, panic disorder, and social phobia.[5] The antidepressant effects may take one to four weeks to occur.[5] It is taken by mouth.[5][6]

Common side effects include nausea, trouble sleeping, sexual problems, shakiness, feeling tired, and sweating.[5] Serious side effects include an increased risk of suicide in those under the age of 25, serotonin syndrome, glaucoma, and QT prolongation.[5] It should not be used in persons who take or have recently taken a MAO inhibitor.[5] Antidepressant discontinuation syndrome may occur when stopped.[5] There are concerns that use during pregnancy may harm the fetus.[3]

Citalopram was approved for medical use in the United States in 1998.[5] It is on the World Health Organization's List of Essential Medicines.[7] It is available as a generic medication.[8] In 2019, it was the 30th most commonly prescribed medication in the United States, with more than 21 million prescriptions.[9][10] Depression

In the United States, citalopram is approved to treat major depressive disorder.[11] Citalopram appears to have comparable efficacy and superior tolerability relative to other antidepressants.[12][13] In the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence ranking of ten antidepressants for efficacy and cost-effectiveness, citalopram is fifth in effectiveness (after mirtazapine, escitalopram, venlafaxine, and sertraline) and fourth in cost-effectiveness.[14] The ranking results were based on a 2009 meta-analysis by Andrea Cipriani; an update of the analysis in 2018 produced broadly similar results.[15][12]

Evidence for effectiveness of citalopram for treating depression in children is uncertain.[16][17]
Panic disorder

Citalopram is licensed in the UK[18] and other European countries[19] for panic disorder, with or without agoraphobia.
Other

Citalopram may be used off-label to treat anxiety, and dysthymia,[20] premenstrual dysphoric disorder, body dysmorphic disorder, and obsessive–compulsive disorder.[21]

It appears to be as effective as fluvoxamine and paroxetine in obsessive–compulsive disorder.[22] Some data suggest the effectiveness of intravenous infusion of citalopram in resistant OCD.[23] Citalopram is well tolerated and as effective as moclobemide in social anxiety disorder.[24] There are studies suggesting that citalopram can be useful in reducing aggressive and impulsive behavior.[25][26] It appears to be superior to placebo for behavioural disturbances associated with dementia.[27] It has also been used successfully for hypersexuality in early Alzheimer's disease.[28]

A meta-analysis, including studies with fluoxetine, paroxetine, sertraline, escitalopram, and citalopram versus placebo, showed SSRIs to be effective in reducing symptoms of premenstrual syndrome, whether taken continuously or just in the luteal phase.[29] For alcoholism, citalopram has produced a modest reduction in alcoholic drink intake and increase in drink-free days in studies of alcoholics, possibly by decreasing desire or reducing the reward.[30]

While on its own citalopram is less effective than amitriptyline in the prevention of migraines, in refractory cases, combination therapy may be more effective.[31]

Citalopram and other SSRIs can be used to treat hot flashes.[32]: 107

A 2009 multisite randomized controlled study found no benefit and some adverse effects in autistic children from citalopram, raising doubts whether SSRIs are effective for treating repetitive behavior in children with autism.[33]

Some research suggests citalopram interacts with cannabinoid protein-couplings in the rat brain, and this is put forward as a potential cause of some of the drug's antidepressant effect.[34]
Administration

Citalopram is typically taken in one dose, either in the morning or evening. It can be taken with or without food. Its absorption does not increase when taken with food,[35][6] but doing so can help prevent nausea. Nausea is often caused when the 5HT3 receptors actively absorb free serotonin, as this receptor is present within the digestive tract.[36] The 5HT3 receptors stimulate vomiting. This side effect, if present, should subside as the body adjusts to the medication.

Citalopram is considered safe and well tolerated in the therapeutic dose range. Distinct from some other agents in its class, it exhibits linear pharmacokinetics and minimal drug interaction potential, making it a better choice for the elderly or comorbid patients.[37]

Chlorthalidone Uses and Potential Side Effects #chlorthalidone25mg #sideeffectsofchlorthalidone25mg

In this video it is described that
Chlorthalidone is a medication primarily used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) and edema (fluid retention). It belongs to a class of drugs known as thiazide diuretics. Chlorthalidone works by increasing the excretion of sodium and water from the body, which helps to lower blood pressure and reduce fluid buildup.
Uses:
1. Hypertension: Chlorthalidone is commonly prescribed to lower blood pressure. By reducing the amount of fluid in the bloodstream and relaxing blood vessels, it helps to decrease the overall pressure against the artery walls.
2. Edema: Chlorthalidone can also be used to treat edema, which is the accumulation of excess fluid in the body's tissues. It helps the body eliminate excess salt and water through urine, which reduces swelling.
Side Effects: Like all medications, chlorthalidone can have potential side effects. Not everyone will experience these side effects, and some may experience them to a greater degree than others. Common side effects of chlorthalidone may include:
1. Dehydration: Since chlorthalidone increases urine output, it can lead to dehydration if you don't consume enough fluids.
2. Electrolyte Imbalance: This medication can lead to imbalances in electrolytes like potassium, sodium, and magnesium. This might result in symptoms such as muscle cramps, weakness, or irregular heartbeats.
3. Dizziness or Lightheadedness: Chlorthalidone can cause a drop in blood pressure, which may lead to dizziness or lightheadedness, especially when standing up quickly.
4. Increased Urination: Due to its diuretic effect, chlorthalidone can increase the frequency of urination.
5. Sensitivity to Sunlight: Some people may become more sensitive to sunlight while taking chlorthalidone, leading to an increased risk of sunburn.
6. Gout Attacks: Thiazide diuretics like chlorthalidone can sometimes trigger gout attacks in individuals who are prone to this condition.
7. Elevated Blood Sugar Levels: Chlorthalidone may lead to a slight increase in blood sugar levels, which could be problematic for individuals with diabetes.
8. Sexual Dysfunction: In some cases, thiazide diuretics like chlorthalidone may contribute to sexual dysfunction.
It's important to note that this is not an exhaustive list of side effects, and some individuals may experience rare or severe reactions. If you're prescribed chlorthalidone and experience any concerning or unusual symptoms, it's important to contact your healthcare provider for guidance.

What to avoid when taking Chlorthalidone? #chlorthalidone #hypertension #heartfailure

In this video it is described that
Warnings
You should not use chlorthalidone if you are unable to urinate, or if you are allergic to sulfa drugs.
Before taking this medicine
You should not use chlorthalidone if you are allergic to it, or if:
• you are unable to urinate; or
• you are allergic to sulfa drugs.
Tell your doctor if you have ever had:
• kidney disease;
• heart failure;
• gout;
• high cholesterol or triglycerides;
• diabetes; or
• if you are on a low-salt diet.
Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant.
Taking chlorthalidone during pregnancy may cause side effects in the newborn baby, such as jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes), bruising or bleeding, low blood sugar, or an electrolyte imbalance.
Do not start or stop taking chlorthalidone during pregnancy without your doctor's advice.
Although chlorthalidone may cause side effects in a newborn, having high blood pressure during pregnancy can cause complications such as diabetes or eclampsia (dangerously high blood pressure that can lead to medical problems in both mother and baby). The benefit of treating hypertension may outweigh any risks to the baby.
You should not breastfeed while using chlorthalidone.
Follow all directions on your prescription label and read all medication guides or instruction sheets. Your doctor may occasionally change your dose. Use the medicine exactly as directed.
Call your doctor if you are sick with vomiting or diarrhea, or if you are sweating more than usual. You can easily become dehydrated while taking chlorthalidone. This can lead to very low blood pressure, a serious electrolyte imbalance, or kidney failure.
Your blood pressure will need to be checked often. Your blood and urine may both be tested if you have been vomiting or are dehydrated.
Chlorthalidone can affect the results of certain medical tests. Tell any doctor who treats you that you are using chlorthalidone.
Major Drug Interactions of Chlorthalidone
Allopurinol
Using allopurinol together with chlorthalidone can increase your risk of serious skin reactions.
Call your doctor immediately if you experience symptoms such as a rash, itching, fever, or chills.
If your doctor does prescribe these medications together, you may need a dose adjustment and closer monitoring to safely use both medications.
Amiodarone
Talk to your doctor before using amiodarone together with chlorthalidone. Combining these medications can increase the risk of an irregular heart rhythm that may be serious.
If your doctor prescribes these medications together, you may need regular monitoring of your electrolyte (magnesium, potassium) levels as well as other tests to safely use both medications.
You should seek immediate medical attention if you develop sudden dizziness, lightheadedness, fainting, or fast or pounding heartbeats during treatment with amiodarone.
In addition, you should let your doctor know if you experience signs of electrolyte disturbance such as weakness, tiredness, drowsiness, confusion, muscle pain, cramps, dizziness, nausea, or vomiting.
Cisapride
Using cisapride together with chlorthalidone is not recommended. Combining these medications can increase the risk of an irregular heart rhythm that may be serious.
You should seek immediate medical attention if you develop sudden dizziness, lightheadedness, fainting, or fast or pounding heartbeats during treatment with cisapride.
Lithium
Ask your doctor before using chlorthalidone and lithium. Using chlorthalidone together with lithium can increase the effects of lithium. This may cause diarrhea, vomiting, drowsiness, tremor, thirst, increased urination, lack of coordination, or muscle weakness.
You may need a dose adjustment or special test to safely use both medications.
Sodium Nitrite
When use of sodium nitrite is required, the doctor should be told if you have been receiving treatment with chlorthalidone. Sodium nitrite can cause hypotension (low blood pressure), and the risk may be greater when combined with other medications that decrease blood pressure such as chlorthalidone.
Excessively low blood pressure can lead to shock, collapse, coma, or even death. Your doctor will need to monitor you closely and possibly take extra precautions for you to safely use these medications together.
Tizanidine
TiZANidine and chlorthalidone may have additive effects in lowering your blood pressure. You may experience headache, dizziness, lightheadedness, fainting, and/or changes in pulse or heart rate.
These side effects are most likely to be seen at the beginning of treatment, following a dose increase, or when treatment is restarted after an interruption.
Let your doctor know if you develop these symptoms and they do not go away after a few days or they become troublesome.

Ninja Nerds!
In this pharmacology lecture, Professor Zach Murphy provides a high-yield breakdown of Thiazide Diuretics, focusing on their mechanism of action, clinical uses, and side effect profile in the management of cardiovascular and renal conditions.

We begin by reviewing how thiazides—such as hydrochlorothiazide, chlorthalidone, and metolazone—inhibit the Na⁺/Cl⁻ symporter in the distal convoluted tubule, promoting sodium and water excretion while enhancing calcium reabsorption. This results in a sustained reduction in blood volume and peripheral resistance, making thiazides a first-line treatment for hypertension.

The lecture explores additional indications including heart failure (mild fluid overload), nephrolithiasis (calcium stones), and nephrogenic diabetes insipidus, while also highlighting their use in combination with other antihypertensives.

We then cover important side effects: hypokalemia, hyponatremia, hyperuricemia, hyperglycemia, hyperlipidemia, and metabolic alkalosis—as well as how thiazides are less effective in patients with advanced renal failure.

- In less than 4 minutes you'll learn:

- What is Tadalafil ( Cialis )?

- Tadalafil, or widely known as Cialis, is a drug used in the treatment of erectile dysfunction (impotence) and symptoms of benign prostatic hypertrophy (enlarged prostate). It enhances erectile function by increasing the amount of cGMP through the inhibition of phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5). As Cyclic GMP causes smooth muscle relaxation and increased blood flow into the corpus cavernosum and ensuing penile erection upon sexual stimulation.

- Tadalafil is available as 5, 10 and 20 mg tablets.

- To treat erectile dysfunction-ED, there are 2 ways that tadalafil may be prescribed. Your doctor will determine which is the best way for you to take tadalafil.

- The first way is to take it as needed, usually at least 30 minutes before sexual activity. Tadalafil's effect on sexual ability may last up to 36 hours.

- The second way to treat ED is to take tadalafil regularly, once a day every day. If you take it this way, you may attempt sexual activity at any time between your doses.

- If you are taking tadalafil to treat both ED and BPH, take it as directed by your doctor, usually once a day. You may attempt sexual activity at any time between your doses. Take it regularly to get the most benefit from it. To help you remember, take it at the same time each day.
