Ninja Nerds!
In this cardiovascular pharmacology lecture, Professor Zach Murphy breaks down the pharmacology of Heparin, one of the most commonly used parenteral anticoagulants in acute care settings. This lecture covers its mechanism of action, clinical indications, and monitoring strategies with high clarity and clinical relevance.

We begin by discussing the mechanism of action of unfractionated heparin (UFH), which binds to antithrombin III and accelerates its inhibition of thrombin (factor IIa) and factor Xa, ultimately preventing fibrin clot formation. We compare this to low molecular weight heparins (LMWH)—such as enoxaparin—which have a more selective action against factor Xa.

You’ll learn the key differences between UFH and LMWH regarding administration routes, half-life, monitoring requirements (aPTT vs anti-Xa), and protamine sulfate reversal strategies. The lecture also discusses the serious complication of heparin-induced thrombocytopenia (HIT), including its pathophysiology, clinical presentation, and alternative anticoagulant options like argatroban.

Clinical indications for heparin include venous thromboembolism (VTE) treatment and prophylaxis, acute coronary syndromes, atrial fibrillation, and perioperative anticoagulation.

Long-Term Paxil Side Effects
Unfortunately, when the efficacy and risks of drugs are studied, the length of the majority of these studies is only short term. However, many Americans who have been prescribed SSRIs have been taking them for 10 years or more. This is troubling, as there have been some severe risks associated with long term use of antidepressants, such as a 14% increased risk of cardiovascular events, including heart attack and stroke. Worse, long-term Paxil use is associated with a 33% increased risk of death.
Serotonin plays vital roles in immune function, digestion, and growth. Continuous disruption of these levels may have wide-ranging negative effects, especially for certain populations. The side effects of Paxil in elderly patients can include negative effects on cognitive function, as there is strong evidence that the long-term usage of Paxil may lead to an increased risk of dementia. Also, between 1-8% of patients taking Paxil in various clinical trials developed hypomania and mania symptoms. Paxil has been used to treat hot flashes associated with menopause.
While Paxil may decrease incidents of hot flashes, the side effects of Paxil for hot flashes are most commonly fatigue and dizziness. Few studies have been carried out on use of SSRIs during pregnancy, but the ones that are published show increased risk to the infant including premature term, smaller head growth, and the potential for numerous other birth defects, for which the drug maker has been fined over $1 billion in damages to 800 cases reported up to 2010. No data for later lawsuits concerning birth defects has been published on extensive search.

Serious side effects of long-term Paxil use include:
Tremors
Loss of coordination
Restlessness
Muscle weakness
Tingling
Numbness
Black stool
Hallucinations
Eye pain, redness or swelling

While most SSRIs aren’t a primary concern for recreational use, dependency is a possibility with any drug. According to the FDA, Paxil withdrawal symptoms can be severe and “treatable only by restarting the drug.” Withdrawal symptoms occur when the drug is stopped after drug dependency has developed.

Symptoms of Paxil withdrawal include:
Agitation
Aggression
Diarrhea
Forgetfulness
Headaches
High blood pressure
Insomnia
Sexual dysfunction
Sweating
Weight gain

What is Albuterol? (Medical Definition)
What is Albuterol? (Medical Definition) Side Effects 3 Views • 5 months ago

What is Albuterol? This video covers the medical definition and provides a brief overview of this topic.
💥Beta-2 Adrenergic Bronchodilators [Full Guide] ➜ ➜ ➜
https://bit.ly/35DHTti

➡️ Albuterol Definition
Albuterol is a short-acting adrenergic bronchodilator agent that is used to treat or prevent bronchospasm. It's considered to be a "rescue drug" because it works quickly to provide relief for reversible airflow obstructions as seen in patients with asthma. You may have also heard it referred to as SABA, or short-acting beta-2 agonist. It causes stimulation of the B2-receptors which relaxes bronchial smooth muscle tissue to helps the airways open back up. Albuterol also stimulates α-receptors and B1-receptors as well which causes vasoconstriction and an increased heart rate. This is why tachycardia and hypertension are two side effects of this medication. Some others include shakiness, tremors, and nervousness in some cases.

➡️ Albuterol Uses
Albuterol comes as a solution (liquid) that can be inhaled into the lungs after being broken up into an aerosol mist by a nebulizer. It can also be administered with a metered-dose inhaler (MDI) or dry-powder inhaler (DPI) as well.

➡️ Some of the common brand names of albuterol include:
- Proventil
- Ventolin
- ProAir
- AccuNeb

Again, for this video, we just wanted to provide you with a brief overview of this topic. We'll be breaking it down into more detail in a separate video.
