Ventolin is a well-known reliever treatment for asthma. It gets to work quickly to relieve symptoms like shortness of breath and wheezing when they appear. Here Dr Daniel Atkinson, the Clinical Lead at Treated, talks us through it.

Reliever inhalers like Ventolin are the most common type of treatment for asthma. They’re typically taken ‘on-demand’ when symptoms appear, and they get to work quickly to re-open your airways when they become constricted. The active ingredient in Ventolin is salbutamol, which is what’s known as a corticosteroid. You can also take it before exercise to help prevent symptoms from appearing.

Ventolin is available as either an Evohaler or an Accuhaler, the Evohaler is a bit more like a traditional asthma inhaler, where you deliver the dose with the button and take a sharp breath in at the same time. Whereas the Accuhaler is a bit easier to use, because it delivers the dose when you breathe in, so you don’t have to time it with pressing a button.

Benicar, Benicar HCT, Azor and Tribenzor are prescription medications that treat high blood pressure. These medicines all contain, Olmesartan a medication that has been linked to 22 cases of sprue-like enteropathy.

According to the FDA, this rare gastro-intestinal disorder can cause symptoms that include severe and chronic diarrhea along with substantial weight loss. The conditions can take anywhere from a few months to years to develop and may require hospitalization. Researchers from The Mayo Clinic found that these 22 patients displayed symptoms suggestive of Celiac Disease. Acyclovir, marketed under brand names like Zovirax and Sitavig, is a widely prescribed antiviral medication recognized for its efficacy against various herpes simplex virus (HSV) infections, including genital herpes, cold sores, and shingles. Its mechanism of action involves a two-step phosphorylation process leading to the formation of acyclovir triphosphate, which selectively inhibits viral DNA polymerase, thereby impeding DNA synthesis and replication. This targeted approach minimizes damage to healthy cells, making acyclovir a potent antiviral agent specifically tailored to combat herpesvirus infections.

The uses of acyclovir extend beyond treating active infections to include preventive measures in immunocompromised individuals and management of conditions like neonatal herpes infections and herpes simplex encephalitis.
