How To Take NAC
How To Take NAC Side Effects 1 Views • 5 months ago

My go-to for NAC Supplementation:
https://www.glutenfreesociety.....org/shop/health-focu

NAC (N-acetylcysteine) is a versatile and supportive supplement with a low side effect profile. It is commonly taken orally, with the recommended dosage ranging from 500 to 2,500 milligrams per day. Most people tolerate doses of 1,000 to 1,500 milligrams well. Taking NAC on an empty stomach is ideal for better absorption, but it can cause stomach upset and nausea for some individuals.

The safety profile of NAC is generally great, with no major known toxicity levels in humans. However, caution should be exercised when taking higher doses for extended periods, and monitoring is recommended.

Narcan Side Effects: Safeguarding Lives in Opioid Overdose Emergencies
Narcan Side Effects: Safeguarding Lives in Opioid Overdose Emergencies Side Effects 1 Views • 5 months ago

Narcan and its role in opioid overdose emergencies.
Narcan, or Naloxone, is a medication that works by binding to the same receptors in the brain that opioids attach to, effectively blocking their effects. When administered promptly during an opioid overdose, Narcan can reverse the symptoms, including slowed breathing and loss of consciousness, potentially saving a person's life.
One of the key reasons Narcan has become such a crucial tool is its ease of use. It can be administered through various routes, including intranasal sprays, auto-injectors, and intramuscular injections. This accessibility empowers not only healthcare professionals but also bystanders and family members to intervene in an overdose emergency.
It is important to note that Narcan is not a substitute for professional medical care. While it can reverse an overdose temporarily, individuals who receive Narcan should still seek immediate medical attention to address the underlying causes of the overdose and prevent future incidents.
Common side effects of Narcan.
Like any medication, Narcan does carry the risk of side effects. However, it is important to remember that the potential benefits of using Narcan in an opioid overdose emergency far outweigh the risks of not intervening.
The most common side effects of Narcan include nausea, vomiting, and increased heart rate. These reactions are generally mild and short-lived, subsiding within a few minutes after administration. It is crucial to reassure the individual who has received Narcan about these side effects and ensure they understand that they are temporary and necessary for their well-being.
In some cases, individuals may experience withdrawal symptoms after Narcan administration. This occurs because Narcan rapidly reverses the effects of opioids, essentially sending the body into immediate withdrawal. Withdrawal symptoms can range from mild discomfort, such as restlessness and muscle aches, to more severe manifestations like agitation and tremors. While withdrawal symptoms can be distressing, they are not life-threatening and should resolve within a short period.
Rare but serious side effects of Narcan.
While rare, there are some serious side effects associated with Narcan administration. These side effects require immediate medical attention to ensure the individual's safety and well-being.
One potentially severe side effect is pulmonary edema, which is the accumulation of fluid in the lungs. This can lead to difficulty breathing and chest pain. If an individual experiences these symptoms after receiving Narcan, it is crucial to seek medical help immediately.
Another rare but serious side effect is cardiovascular complications. Narcan can cause a sudden increase in blood pressure and heart rate, which may be problematic for individuals with pre-existing cardiovascular conditions. It is important for healthcare professionals and first responders to be aware of this possibility and monitor the individual closely after administering Narcan.
Managing and mitigating side effects of Narcan.
While the side effects of Narcan can be distressing, they are generally temporary and resolve on their own. However, there are steps that can be taken to manage and mitigate these side effects, ensuring the individual's comfort and well-being.
To alleviate nausea and vomiting, individuals can be placed in a side-lying position to prevent choking and aspiration. Providing a calm and supportive environment can also help reduce feelings of distress.
For individuals experiencing withdrawal symptoms, reassurance and understanding are essential. Educating them about the temporary nature of these symptoms and providing support can help alleviate anxiety and discomfort. In some cases, healthcare professionals may administer additional medications to manage severe withdrawal symptoms.
Tips for administering Narcan safely and effectively.
Administering Narcan correctly and promptly is crucial for its effectiveness in reversing an opioid overdose. Here are some tips to ensure Narcan is administered safely and effectively:.
Familiarize yourself with the specific administration method of Narcan you have available, whether it is an intranasal spray, auto-injector, or intramuscular injection. Read the instructions carefully and practice the technique if possible.

What are BETA BLOCKERS? How do they work? | Bisoprolol, Atenolol, Carvedilol, Metoprolol Side Effects 1 Views • 5 months ago

How do beta blockers work and what do they do to your body? Well, this video is for you! Here's the explainer with the what, how, why, side effects, history and pharmacology (two advanced sections in the 2nd half).

There are lots of beta-blockers out there and they're really good for heart conditions and high blood pressure. They can also be used for glaucoma.

Common ones include bisoprolol, atenolol, labetalol, carvedilol, metoprolol, propranolol, sotalol. You might also know them by their brand names: Tenormin, Cardicor, Emcor, Betaloc, Lopressor, Nebilet, Angilol and Inderal.

As always we go through things in simple terms and then for the hardcore nerds we're into the complex stuff.

You'll learn about how these drugs act on the beta adrenoreceptors in your body - that's where adrenaline, noradrenaline (or epinephrine and norepinephrine) bind.

Patient Caitlyn was on different types of birth control. She found it was a struggle to remain consistent taking them, and also experienced negative side effects. She ended up talking with Austin area Family Medicine Specialist Dr. Paul John about her problem, and he prescribed her a new birth control device called Nexplanon. Nexplanon is a very small elastic tube device that only needs to be replaced every three years. It slowly releases a hormone over the course of those three years, allowing the patient to free themselves from the burden of taking a pill every day.

Specifically, nitrofurantoin is effective against a wide range of bacteria commonly found in UTIs, such as Escherichia coli, Enterococcus, Klebsiella, and Staphylococcus aureus. It acts by interfering with the bacterial cell wall synthesis, which ultimately leads to the destruction of the bacteria.

Apart from treating UTIs, nitrofurantoin may also be prescribed for the prevention of recurrent urinary tract infections. In some cases, it might be used to treat other types of infections caused by susceptible bacteria, but this is less common.

It is important to note that nitrofurantoin is not effective against infections caused by viruses, such as the common cold or flu. It is specifically designed to target bacterial infections in the urinary tract.

The dosage and duration of nitrofurantoin treatment can vary depending on the severity and type of infection, as well as individual patient factors. It is typically prescribed as a short-term treatment course, usually ranging from 5 to 7 days.

As with any medication, there may be potential side effects associated with nitrofurantoin use. Common side effects include gastrointestinal disturbances, such as nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. In rare cases, it may cause more serious side effects, such as pulmonary toxicity or liver problems. It is important to follow the prescribed dosage and consult a healthcare professional if any adverse reactions occur.

In conclusion, nitrofurantoin is primarily used to treat urinary tract infections caused by susceptible bacteria. It is an effective antibiotic that targets the bacteria in the urinary system, helping to alleviate symptoms and eradicate the infection. As always, it is important to consult with a healthcare professional before starting any medication to ensure its appropriateness for your specific situation."

Generic name: Nitroglycerin.
Brand names: Nitro and Nitrolingual.
Available as spray, injection and patch.

How to use it?
- Spray: first take a rest. If your chest pain does NOT subsides use the spray. Do so by sitting down, press your tongue against the roof of your mouth and hold your breath. Then spray under the tongue and close your mouth. DO NOT inhale the spray. The drug should starts to work almost immediately. However if necessary, you can spray another puff after five minutes.
Contact a doctor immediately if the pain has not disappeared after three uses and after 15 minutes. This could indicate a heart attack.
- Patch: peel off the protective film and try not to touch the adhesive with your fingers. Apply the patch to a clean, dry, undamaged and not too hairy area on your chest or on the inside of the upper arm.

When to use it?
Nitroglycerin are part of a group of drugs called nitrates. These can cause vasodilation (which is the widening of your blood vessels), lowering the central venous pressure and decreases the supply of blood to the heart. That is why nitroglycerin can be used in the treatment of:
- Acute attacks of angina pectoris, which is a medical term for chest pain or heart cramp.
- And offlabel it is used in the treatment of acute heart failure and Acute coronary syndrome.

What is the correct dosage?
The precise dose will depend on your specific indication of use, the side effect you might experience and the severity of your symptoms. Therefore always use the precise amount and frequency your doctor prescribed you.
- However, when treating angina pectoris in adults with a spray your doctor might prescribe a dose of 1–2 sprays under the tongue. Which can be repeated after 5 minutes if necessary.
- When your doctor prescribed you nitroglycerin as a patch, the usual dose for an adult would be a patch of 5 mg per day. If necessary this can be increased up to a patch of 10 or 15mg per day.

What are the side-effects?
- Very common (10%): headache, nausea, vomiting.
- Common (1-10%): dizziness, low blood pressure, sleepiness, a fast heart rate.
- Uncommon (0.1-1%): Worsened symptoms of angina pectoris, collapse, allergic skin reactions.
- Rare (0.01-0.1%): transient redness of the face and neck.
- Very rare (0.01%): heartburn and exfoliative dermatitis.

Safety:
First of all nitroglycerin can cause dizziness. Which can make it dangerous to drive.
Furthermore if you combine it with alcohol, this might further increase some of the side effects you might experience.
In addition nitroglycerin can have interactions with other drugs your are taking. Always discuss this with your prescribing doctor.
Lastly, nitroglycerin can be dangerous for pregnant women and women who are breast feeding. Therefore always discuss this with your personal doctor.

What Is NORETHISTERONE? And Why Should You Care? Choose Better - With Dr Daniel Atkinson
What Is NORETHISTERONE? And Why Should You Care? Choose Better - With Dr Daniel Atkinson Side Effects 1 Views • 5 months ago

Norethisterone is a tablet that’s used for a few different things, one of which is to delay your period. Here Dr Daniel Atkinson, Clinical Lead at Treated, talks us through what it is and how it works.

Delaying your period can be really useful for you if you’ve got something coming up - like a holiday or a big event - that you don’t want your period getting in the way of. You might find it particularly useful if you tend to get some pretty inconvenient or uncomfortable symptoms during your period.

The normal dose is 3 tablets a day, and you can take it for however long you want to delay your period for (up to a maximum of 10 days). Norethisterone is a generic tablet, this means that it works in the same way as some other treatments for period delay (like Utovlan and Primolut N) but because it’s unbranded it’s usually a bit cheaper.

The team at Treated can help you get the period delay medication you need. Subscribe, pause or stop whenever it suits you. Choose better.

What are the side effects of the mini pill?
What are the side effects of the mini pill? Side Effects 1 Views • 5 months ago

You wanted to know what side effects are associated with the mini pill, or one that has progestin only. When someone thinks of birth control pills, they may generally think of birth control pills that you take when you’re not breastfeeding, and these have 2 different hormones in them. But the mini pill only has 1, and it’s progestin, and this works in harmony with the hormones that a woman’s body produces while nursing to prevent ovulation from happening. The mini pill doesn’t cause headaches and it also doesn’t contribute to weight-gain, which is a really good thing after having a baby, because you’re trying to lose the weight.

Users of the mini pill are slightly more likely to have ovarian cysts, acne breakouts are more common while using it, and the most common side effect is unscheduled vaginal bleeding and spotting. This, by far, is the most common side effect and the reason why most women end up discontinuing its use. Some women actually experience shorter cycles or shorter periods in between times when they’re having periods and the periods may be longer, and it’s normal also to have breakthrough bleeding or bleeding between periods, and so if you’re experiencing this, talk with your doctor and they can help you determine if the birth control is the likely underlying cause, and if so, if another type of birth control would be better for your circumstances. If you have any more questions in the future for me, feel free to ask them on our Intermountain Moms Facebook and Instagram pages, and recommend us to your friends and family too.

Octreotide Injection: Uses, Dosage, Mechanism of Action, Side Effects, and Important Advice
Octreotide Injection: Uses, Dosage, Mechanism of Action, Side Effects, and Important Advice Side Effects 1 Views • 5 months ago

Welcome to MediInsights, where we unlock the wonders of wellness! In today's video, we delve into the essential details of Octreotide Injection, a crucial medication in the management of specific hormonal disorders and tumors.

Use of Octreotide Injection:
Octreotide injection is a powerful medication used primarily for treating symptoms related to metastatic carcinoid tumors and VIPomas, such as severe diarrhea and flushing. It's also a key treatment for acromegaly, a condition caused by excess growth hormone, and is utilized to prevent complications following pancreatic surgery.

Dosage of Octreotide Injection:
The dosage of octreotide varies depending on the condition and patient response. For acromegaly, the starting dose is typically 50 micrograms injected subcutaneously two or three times daily, with adjustments based on the patient’s needs. For treating carcinoid tumors and VIPomas, the initial dose can range from 100 to 600 micrograms per day, divided into multiple doses. Long-acting formulations like Sandostatin LAR are administered intramuscularly every four weeks, with dosages between 20 to 30 mg.

Mechanism of Action of Octreotide Injection:
Octreotide is a synthetic analog of somatostatin, a natural hormone that inhibits various other hormones. It binds to somatostatin receptors, reducing the secretion of growth hormone, serotonin, and other peptides like insulin and glucagon. This action helps manage symptoms by controlling excessive hormone production and secretion.

Side Effects of Octreotide Injection:
While octreotide is effective, it can cause some side effects. Common issues include gastrointestinal disturbances such as nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and diarrhea. Patients might also experience injection site reactions and gallstones due to reduced bile flow. Other potential side effects include blood sugar imbalances (hyperglycemia or hypoglycemia), bradycardia, hypothyroidism, and, with long-term use, vitamin B12 deficiency.

Important Advice for Using Octreotide Injection:
It's crucial to follow your healthcare provider's instructions carefully. Regular monitoring of blood glucose and thyroid function is recommended due to the endocrine effects of octreotide. Rotate injection sites to avoid tissue damage and report any severe side effects, such as intense abdominal pain or symptoms of gallstones, to your healthcare provider immediately. Regular check-ups are essential to adjust the dosage and ensure the treatment's effectiveness.

"The Science Behind Octreotide and Its Effects on Weight" for Beginners

Octreotide is a artificial peptide that copies the activity of somatostatin, a hormonal agent made through the hypothalamus. Somatostatin hinders the release of growth hormonal agent coming from the pituitary glandular and manages the secretion of other hormonal agents, including the hormone insulin and glucagon. Octreotide is used to deal with a range of problems, including acromegaly, carcinoid syndrome, and gastroenteropancreatic neuroendocrine growths.

One possible edge impact of octreotide therapy is body weight reduction. In some patients, this can easily be a desirable end result, specifically if they are overweight or obese. However, in others it may be challenging and require assistance.

The mechanism through which octreotide causes weight loss is not entirely clear. One probability is that it lowers hunger through decreasing ghrelin secretion. Ghrelin is a hormone produced in the stomach that boosts hunger and food items consumption. Studies have presented that octreotide can minimize ghrelin degrees in healthy and balanced volunteers and in patients along with acromegaly or style 2 diabetic issues mellitus.

One more potential device for octreotide-induced weight loss is change of blood sugar metabolism. Octreotide has been presented to enhance blood insulin sensitivity in clients with kind 2 diabetes mellitus by decreasing hepatic glucose development and enhancing outer blood sugar uptake. This impact might additionally contribute to weight reduction by minimizing spreading sugar amounts and advertising fat oxidation.

In addition to these metabolic impacts, octreotide may possess direct effects on adipose tissue physiology. In vitro studies have presented that somatostatin receptors are present on adipocytes (fatty tissue cells) and that somatostatin can prevent lipolysis (the break down of saved fat). It is possible that octreotide has actually comparable results on adipose cells metabolic rate in vivo.

Professional studies have illustrated the effectiveness of octreotide for weight loss in various patient populaces. For example, a randomized controlled trial published in JAMA in 2008 matched up the effects of octreotide and inactive medicine on body weight loss in overweight grownups along with type 2 diabetes mellitus mellitus. After 16 weeks of therapy, the octreotide group shed an standard of 4.4 kilograms (9.7 lbs) matched up to a nasty weight increase of 0.5 kg (1.1 lbs) in the inactive medicine team.

An additional research study released in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism in 2013 analyzed the results of octreotide on physical body body weight and make-up in clients along with acromegaly. After six months of procedure, individuals experienced substantial decreases in body weight, body mass index, and waistline circumference.

While octreotide can easily be helpful for weight reduction, it is not without risks and edge effects. Usual edge effects feature intestinal disturbances such as nausea or vomiting, diarrhea, and stomach pain. Unusual but serious side effects feature gallstones, pancreatitis, and heart arrhythmias.

In conclusion, octreotide is a man-made peptide that imitates the activity of somatostatin and has actually a range of therapeutic usage. One prospective side impact is body weight loss, which may be mediated by alterations in appetite guideline, glucose metabolic process, and adipose tissue anatomy. While successful for some clients, it is important to meticulously consider the risks and advantages just before initiating treatment along with octreotide for body weight loss functions.
