The Benefits and Harms of Hyperkalemia Management – BC PWR (December 2020)
The Benefits and Harms of Hyperkalemia Management – BC PWR (December 2020) Side Effects 1 Views • 5 months ago

Province Wide Rounds is a collaboration between the UBC Division of Nephrology and BC Renal.

Dr. Navdeep Tangri, a physician and associate professor with the Department of Nephrology at the University of Manitoba, discusses the current practices, as well as benefits and harms, of managing hyperkalemia in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD).

0:03:14 – Overview of Hyperkalemia
Dr. Tangri starts by defining hyperkalemia and how it disproportionately occurs in patients with kidney disease. He goes on to describe the how heart failure and renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS) inhibitors are associated with the condition..
0:09:45 – Study on Hyperkalemia and RAAS Inhibitors
Dr. Tangri discusses his own research, looking at the impact of discontinuing the use of RAAS inhibitors after hyperkalemia. His team conducted a retrospective cohort study using administrative data from Manitoba. Over a three-year period following hyperkalemia events, there was a high rate of mortality among patients (largely cardiovascular-related deaths); discontinuation of RAAS inhibitors was associated with significantly higher chance of death. He also presents data on suboptimal and maximum doses. There is some benefit for dose reduction over discontinuation.
0:24:49 – Summary of Findings
He summarizes the key findings from the study and discusses limitations.
0:25:09 – Existing Treatment Options for Hyperkalemia
Dr. Tangri goes on to discuss current practices of treating hyperkalemia, highlighting the advantages and disadvantages of sodium polystyrene sulfonate (SPS) and loop diuretics.
0:30:06 – New Treatment Options for Hyperkalemia
He talks about new potassium binders, including SZC and Patiromer. Patiromer is a novel, non-absorbed potassium binder that has been found to safely and effectively lower potassium levels.
0:39:59 – Questions From the Audience

LOPERAMIDE, loperamide hydrochloride, loperamide hcl
LOPERAMIDE, loperamide hydrochloride, loperamide hcl Side Effects 1 Views • 5 months ago

LOPERAMIDE, loperamide hydrochloride, loperamide hcl.
Brand names of loperamide generic: Diamode, Imodium (various products), Maalox Anti-Diarrheal, Pepto Diarrhea Control, and others.
Loperamide tablets: loperamide 1 mg, loperamide 2 mg, loperamide 4 mg.

Loperamide review: what is loperamide?, what is loperamide used for?, loperamide side effects, lopeamide uses, loperamide dosage.

Loperamide.

Why is this medication prescribed?

Nonprescription (over-the-counter) loperamide is used to control acute diarrhea (loose stools that come on suddenly and usually lasts less than 2 weeks), including travelers' diarrhea. Prescription loperamide is also used to control acute diarrhea and also ongoing diarrhea associated with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD; condition in which the lining of all or part of the intestine is swollen, irritated, or has sores). Prescription loperamide is also used to reduce the amount of fluid in people with ileostomies (surgery to create an opening for waste to leave the body through the abdomen). Loperamide is in a class of medications called antidiarrheal agents. It works by decreasing the flow of fluids and electrolytes into the bowel and by slowing down the movement of the bowel to decrease the number of bowel movements.

How should this medicine be used?

Loperamide comes as a tablet, capsule, and as a suspension or solution (liquid) to take by mouth. Nonprescription (over-the-counter) loperamide usually is taken immediately after each loose bowel movement but not more than the 24-hour maximum amount described on the label. Prescription loperamide is sometimes taken on a schedule (one or more times a day). Follow the directions on the package or on your prescription label carefully, and ask your doctor or pharmacist to explain any part you do not understand. Take loperamide exactly as directed.

If you are giving loperamide to your child, read the package label carefully to make sure that it is the right product for the age of the child. Loperamide should not be given to a child younger than 2 years of age.
Check the package label to find out how much medication the child needs. If you know how much your child weighs, give the dose that matches that weight on the chart. If you don't know your child's weight, give the dose that matches your child's age. Ask your child's doctor if you don't know how much medication to give your child.

If you are taking loperamide liquid, do not use a household spoon to measure your dose. Use the measuring cup that came with the medication or use a spoon made especially for measuring liquid medication.

If you are taking loperamide for acute diarrhea and your symptoms get worse or if your diarrhea lasts longer than 48 hours, stop taking this medication and call your doctor.

Other uses for this medicine.

This medication may be prescribed for other uses; ask your doctor or pharmacist for more information.

What side effects can this medication cause?

Loperamide may cause side effects. Tell your doctor if any of these symptoms are severe or do not go away:

constipation.
fatigue.

If you or someone taking loperamide experience any of the following symptoms, call your/their doctor immediately or get emergency medical treatment:

rash.
red, peeling or blistering skin.
hives.
itching.
wheezing.
difficulty breathing.
fever.
stomach pain or swelling.
bloody stools.

What is Loratadine Used For A Comprehensive Guide to Its Uses and Benefits
What is Loratadine Used For A Comprehensive Guide to Its Uses and Benefits Side Effects 1 Views • 5 months ago

"Loratadine is an antihistamine drug commonly used to treat a variety of allergies and conditions. It works by blocking the release of histamine, a chemical released in response to allergens. By reducing the amount of histamine in the body, loratadine can help relieve symptoms like sneezing, itching, and runny nose. This medication is available both over the counter and by prescription, and it can be taken in tablet, liquid, or nasal spray form. It can be a very effective treatment for allergies, but it’s important to understand the potential side effects and how to properly use it. In this guide, we’ll explain what loratadine is used for, the potential benefits and risks, and how to take it safely.
What is Loratadine?
Loratadine (also known as Claritin) is one of the most common antihistamines used today. It’s a first-generation antihistamine, meaning it’s one of the oldest and most commonly prescribed types of antihistamines. Both over-the-counter and prescription versions of loratadine are available, and it’s often prescribed as part of allergy treatment plans. Loratadine is used to treat symptoms caused by allergies, such as sneezing, itching, watery eyes, and runny nose. It can also be used to treat hives and insect bites. Doctors may also recommend this drug to treat chronic urticaria (a skin condition that causes swelling and itching), insomnia, and migraine headaches.
Uses of Loratadine
Some of the most common uses of loratadine include: - Allergies: For allergies and other related conditions, loratadine is prescribed to relieve symptoms like sneezing and runny nose. - Hives: Hives are caused by an allergic reaction, and loratadine is often prescribed to treat them. - Insomnia: Some people find loratadine helps them sleep better, and it’s a common recommendation for people with insomnia. - Chronic urticaria: Chronic urticaria causes itchy, swollen skin, and a doctor may recommend loratadine to treat it.
Benefits of Loratadine
Some of the potential benefits of loratadine include: - Relieving allergy symptoms: Loratadine can be a very effective treatment for allergies, especially when taken in conjunction with other allergy medications. - Suppressing the immune system: Some research suggests loratadine may reduce the number and severity of allergic reactions in the long term, even when the drug is out of your system. - Treating hives: Many people find loratadine helps relieve the itching and swelling caused by hives. - Treating chronic urticaria: Chronic urticaria can be very uncomfortable, and loratadine can help reduce the symptoms.
Side Effects of Loratadine
Some of the potential side effects of loratadine include: - Drowsiness: Some people report feeling tired after taking loratadine. This is especially common in children. - Dry mouth: Loratadine can cause a dry mouth, most likely due to the antihistamine drying up the tissues of the mouth. - Headache: In rare cases, loratadine may cause headaches. - Nausea: Like dry mouth, nausea is another rare side effect of loratadine. - Somnolence: Loratadine can cause drowsiness, which can lead to somnolence (excessive sleepiness). - Weakness: Some people experience weakness after taking loratadine. This is most likely a result of the drowsiness.
How to Take Loratadine Safely
Like most prescription drugs, loratadine is not entirely risk-free. To minimize the risk of side effects, you should take it only as prescribed and follow the directions listed on your prescription label. Some tips for taking loratadine safely include: - Sticking to your prescribed dosage: The dosage of loratadine may vary from person to person, so it’s important not to try to “increase” your dosage. - Avoiding other drugs: Many drugs interact with loratadine. Before taking loratadine with other medications, make sure your doctor knows about all of the drugs you’re taking. - Eating and drinking normally: While you may feel like eating or drinking while taking loratadine isn’t worth the effort, remember that these activities do not increase or decrease the side effects associated with the drug.
What to Avoid When Taking Loratadine
Like many other prescription drugs, loratadine should not be combined with certain other drugs.

80% of urine infections are caused by one thing
80% of urine infections are caused by one thing Side Effects 1 Views • 5 months ago

Urine infections are incredibly common.
So common that more than one of my patients asked me to do a video on this topic!

Anyone can get urine infections but they're most common in women with most women experiencing one in their lifetime.

The symptoms of a urinary infection (or UTI) are usually pretty obvious - peeing more than usual and with "urgency", burning and stinging when you pee and sometimes tummy pain or blood in the urine.

There are a few things that increase the risk of UTIs, like pregnancy, menopause and diabetes but either way, they're usually straightforward to spot and can be managed remotely most of the time.

Some UTIs improve with time and no treatment other than water and rest but most need antibiotics as bacteria is the usual culprit. Other over the counter treatments and home remedies are not evidence based (ie there is not enough evidence to definitely recommend them) but most are safe to try if you want to give it a go.

UTIs improve quickly but if you notice that it doesnt, or you have new symptoms or feel unwell with the urinary symptoms, you need to see your doctor.

An In-depth Analysis of Nitrofurantoin: A Key Antibiotic for UTIs cas: 67-20-9
An In-depth Analysis of Nitrofurantoin: A Key Antibiotic for UTIs cas: 67-20-9 Side Effects 1 Views • 5 months ago

Nitrofurantoin is an antibiotic medication used to treat and prevent urinary tract infections (UTIs) caused by certain types of bacteria. It is not effective against kidney infections.

Mechanism of Action:
Nitrofurantoin works by damaging bacterial DNA, which inhibits the growth and multiplication of bacteria. It is bactericidal at therapeutic doses.

Medical Uses:

Primary Use: Treatment of uncomplicated UTIs caused by susceptible strains of Escherichia coli or Staphylococcus saprophyticus.
Prophylaxis: Prevention of UTIs in those who have frequent infections or those who are undergoing certain medical procedures.
Not Recommended: For the treatment of pyelonephritis (kidney infections) or prostatitis because it achieves insufficient concentrations in the kidney and prostate, respectively.
Side Effects:
While Nitrofurantoin is generally well-tolerated, some individuals may experience side effects. Common side effects include:

Nausea
Headache
Loss of appetite
Diarrhea
In rare cases, it can cause more severe side effects like lung problems, liver problems, and peripheral neuropathy.

Contraindications:
Nitrofurantoin should not be used in individuals with:

A known hypersensitivity to nitrofurantoin
Significant kidney dysfunction
History of chronic pulmonary reactions to nitrofurantoin
At term of pregnancy (38–42 weeks gestation), during labor and delivery, or when the onset of labor is imminent
Pharmacology:
Nitrofurantoin is rapidly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract and is distributed into the tissues and fluids. It is excreted in the urine, concentrating in the urine at therapeutic levels.

History:
Nitrofurantoin was discovered in 1952 and was approved for medical use in the United States in 1953. It is on the World Health Organization's List of Essential Medicines, indicating that it is one of the most effective and safe medicines needed in a health system.

Formulations:
It is available in various formulations, including capsules, tablets, and a liquid suspension.

Resistance:
Bacterial resistance to nitrofurantoin has remained relatively low and is linked to the drug's unique mechanism of action.
