What to avoid when taking Chlorthalidone? #chlorthalidone #hypertension #heartfailure

In this video it is described that
Warnings
You should not use chlorthalidone if you are unable to urinate, or if you are allergic to sulfa drugs.
Before taking this medicine
You should not use chlorthalidone if you are allergic to it, or if:
• you are unable to urinate; or
• you are allergic to sulfa drugs.
Tell your doctor if you have ever had:
• kidney disease;
• heart failure;
• gout;
• high cholesterol or triglycerides;
• diabetes; or
• if you are on a low-salt diet.
Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant.
Taking chlorthalidone during pregnancy may cause side effects in the newborn baby, such as jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes), bruising or bleeding, low blood sugar, or an electrolyte imbalance.
Do not start or stop taking chlorthalidone during pregnancy without your doctor's advice.
Although chlorthalidone may cause side effects in a newborn, having high blood pressure during pregnancy can cause complications such as diabetes or eclampsia (dangerously high blood pressure that can lead to medical problems in both mother and baby). The benefit of treating hypertension may outweigh any risks to the baby.
You should not breastfeed while using chlorthalidone.
Follow all directions on your prescription label and read all medication guides or instruction sheets. Your doctor may occasionally change your dose. Use the medicine exactly as directed.
Call your doctor if you are sick with vomiting or diarrhea, or if you are sweating more than usual. You can easily become dehydrated while taking chlorthalidone. This can lead to very low blood pressure, a serious electrolyte imbalance, or kidney failure.
Your blood pressure will need to be checked often. Your blood and urine may both be tested if you have been vomiting or are dehydrated.
Chlorthalidone can affect the results of certain medical tests. Tell any doctor who treats you that you are using chlorthalidone.
Major Drug Interactions of Chlorthalidone
Allopurinol
Using allopurinol together with chlorthalidone can increase your risk of serious skin reactions.
Call your doctor immediately if you experience symptoms such as a rash, itching, fever, or chills.
If your doctor does prescribe these medications together, you may need a dose adjustment and closer monitoring to safely use both medications.
Amiodarone
Talk to your doctor before using amiodarone together with chlorthalidone. Combining these medications can increase the risk of an irregular heart rhythm that may be serious.
If your doctor prescribes these medications together, you may need regular monitoring of your electrolyte (magnesium, potassium) levels as well as other tests to safely use both medications.
You should seek immediate medical attention if you develop sudden dizziness, lightheadedness, fainting, or fast or pounding heartbeats during treatment with amiodarone.
In addition, you should let your doctor know if you experience signs of electrolyte disturbance such as weakness, tiredness, drowsiness, confusion, muscle pain, cramps, dizziness, nausea, or vomiting.
Cisapride
Using cisapride together with chlorthalidone is not recommended. Combining these medications can increase the risk of an irregular heart rhythm that may be serious.
You should seek immediate medical attention if you develop sudden dizziness, lightheadedness, fainting, or fast or pounding heartbeats during treatment with cisapride.
Lithium
Ask your doctor before using chlorthalidone and lithium. Using chlorthalidone together with lithium can increase the effects of lithium. This may cause diarrhea, vomiting, drowsiness, tremor, thirst, increased urination, lack of coordination, or muscle weakness.
You may need a dose adjustment or special test to safely use both medications.
Sodium Nitrite
When use of sodium nitrite is required, the doctor should be told if you have been receiving treatment with chlorthalidone. Sodium nitrite can cause hypotension (low blood pressure), and the risk may be greater when combined with other medications that decrease blood pressure such as chlorthalidone.
Excessively low blood pressure can lead to shock, collapse, coma, or even death. Your doctor will need to monitor you closely and possibly take extra precautions for you to safely use these medications together.
Tizanidine
TiZANidine and chlorthalidone may have additive effects in lowering your blood pressure. You may experience headache, dizziness, lightheadedness, fainting, and/or changes in pulse or heart rate.
These side effects are most likely to be seen at the beginning of treatment, following a dose increase, or when treatment is restarted after an interruption.
Let your doctor know if you develop these symptoms and they do not go away after a few days or they become troublesome.

Chlorthalidone Uses and Potential Side Effects #chlorthalidone25mg #sideeffectsofchlorthalidone25mg

In this video it is described that
Chlorthalidone is a medication primarily used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) and edema (fluid retention). It belongs to a class of drugs known as thiazide diuretics. Chlorthalidone works by increasing the excretion of sodium and water from the body, which helps to lower blood pressure and reduce fluid buildup.
Uses:
1. Hypertension: Chlorthalidone is commonly prescribed to lower blood pressure. By reducing the amount of fluid in the bloodstream and relaxing blood vessels, it helps to decrease the overall pressure against the artery walls.
2. Edema: Chlorthalidone can also be used to treat edema, which is the accumulation of excess fluid in the body's tissues. It helps the body eliminate excess salt and water through urine, which reduces swelling.
Side Effects: Like all medications, chlorthalidone can have potential side effects. Not everyone will experience these side effects, and some may experience them to a greater degree than others. Common side effects of chlorthalidone may include:
1. Dehydration: Since chlorthalidone increases urine output, it can lead to dehydration if you don't consume enough fluids.
2. Electrolyte Imbalance: This medication can lead to imbalances in electrolytes like potassium, sodium, and magnesium. This might result in symptoms such as muscle cramps, weakness, or irregular heartbeats.
3. Dizziness or Lightheadedness: Chlorthalidone can cause a drop in blood pressure, which may lead to dizziness or lightheadedness, especially when standing up quickly.
4. Increased Urination: Due to its diuretic effect, chlorthalidone can increase the frequency of urination.
5. Sensitivity to Sunlight: Some people may become more sensitive to sunlight while taking chlorthalidone, leading to an increased risk of sunburn.
6. Gout Attacks: Thiazide diuretics like chlorthalidone can sometimes trigger gout attacks in individuals who are prone to this condition.
7. Elevated Blood Sugar Levels: Chlorthalidone may lead to a slight increase in blood sugar levels, which could be problematic for individuals with diabetes.
8. Sexual Dysfunction: In some cases, thiazide diuretics like chlorthalidone may contribute to sexual dysfunction.
It's important to note that this is not an exhaustive list of side effects, and some individuals may experience rare or severe reactions. If you're prescribed chlorthalidone and experience any concerning or unusual symptoms, it's important to contact your healthcare provider for guidance.

Chlorthalidone (Hygroton) side effects of this commonly used blood pressure medication.
Chlorthalidone (Hygroton) side effects of this commonly used blood pressure medication. Side Effects 4 Views • 5 months ago

Welcome to our educational video by Dr. Lukasz Kiljanek, a Board Certified Nephrologist, Hypertension Specialist, and Internal Medicine physician.

Chlorthalidone (also sold under the registered brand names Hygroton and Thalitone) is one of the most commonly prescribed medications, water pills or diuretics used for treating hypertension (high blood pressures) and edema (swelling) associated with heart failure, kidney disease. Here are some common side effects and important information to keep in mind:

Frequent Urination: Chlorthalidone works by causing your kidneys to remove excess fluid from your body, which leads to increased urination. While this can be inconvenient, it is often a desired effect to help get rid of excess fluid in conditions like heart failure or edema.

Dizziness: Dizziness can happen, especially if you stand up too quickly. This is because Chlorthalidone can lower your blood pressure, especially if the dose is too strong, or if you have other problems making you dehydrated, like diarrhea or vomiting. Dehydration can add to its effect and make the dizziness worse.

Electrolyte Imbalance: Chlorthalidone can cause your electrolyte levels (such as potassium and sodium) to drop. Your healthcare provider will likely monitor your electrolyte levels through blood work, usually a few weeks after starting or increasing the dose, to ensure they remain within safe ranges.

Dehydration: Because Chlorthalidone increases urination, it can lead to dehydration. Symptoms of dehydration include dry mouth, excessive thirst, dizziness, and reduced urine output.

Hearing Issues: Although rare, some people might experience ringing in the ears (tinnitus) or hearing loss. If you notice any hearing issues, notify your healthcare provider immediately.

Monitoring Blood Work: It is important to monitor your creatinine, potassium, and sodium levels through blood work, which can range from days to weeks after the initiation of Chlorthalidone or after an increased dose. The timing of these checks will depend on the dose and your personal sensitivity to the medication.

Always notify your healthcare provider if you develop any side effects or have any concerns or questions about your medication. They can provide the best advice and support for your specific situation.

Hi Everyone, I am Azam saifi Founder of this channel, . I come from a rural background and I always had issues with grammar/language and different terminologies used in different medicine books. So, I decided start this Channel to ease the load on students like me and make Biology videos in really simple day to day language. During my course of education, I came across a very quick fact that every Tutor in our country has his/her very unique style of delivering the content to their students; which is very good when the words and the stories are running around your IQ level. But, then starts the glimpse of a bad dream when words and explanation come up to you as "bouchers in a cricket game." I myself being a mediocre student always faced this issue and I just wanted to clear them. Thank you Support us by subscribe our channel. Thank you

No, cetirizine and chlorpheniramine are not the same. They are both antihistamines but belong to different classes and have different properties.
Cetirizine is a second-generation antihistamine that is commonly used to relieve allergy symptoms such as sneezing, itching, watery eyes, and runny nose. It works by blocking the effects of histamine, a substance released by the body during an allergic reaction. Cetirizine is available over-the-counter and in prescription strength. It is known for its non-drowsy formula and long-lasting effects.
On the other hand, chlorpheniramine is a first-generation antihistamine that is also used to treat allergy symptoms. It works by blocking histamine receptors in the body, reducing the symptoms associated with allergies. Chlorpheniramine is available over-the-counter and in prescription strength as well. However, it is known to cause drowsiness and may not be suitable for individuals who need to stay alert or operate machinery.
While both cetirizine and chlorpheniramine can be effective in alleviating allergy symptoms, they have different characteristics and may be more suitable for different individuals based on their specific needs and preferences. It is always recommended to consult with a healthcare professional to determine the most suitable antihistamine for your specific condition.

Chlorpheniramine is an antihistamine used to relieve symptoms of allergy, hay fever, and the common cold. These symptoms include rash, watery eyes, itchy eyes/nose/throat/skin, cough, runny nose, and sneezing. This medication works by blocking a certain natural substance (histamine) that your body makes during an allergic reaction. By blocking another natural substance made by your body (acetylcholine), it helps dry up some body fluids to relieve symptoms such as watery eyes and runny nose.Cough-and-cold products have not been shown to be safe or effective in children younger than 6 years. Do not use this product to treat cold symptoms in children younger than 6 years unless specifically directed by the doctor. Some products (such as long-acting tablets/capsules) are not recommended for use in children younger than 12 years. Ask your doctor or pharmacist for more details about using your product safely. These products do not cure or shorten the length of the common cold and may cause serious side effects. To decrease the risk for serious side effects, carefully follow all dosage directions. Do not use this product to make a child sleepy. Do not give other cough-and-cold medication that might contain the same or similar ingredients (see also Drug Interactions section). Ask the doctor or pharmacist about other ways to relieve cough and cold symptoms (such as drinking enough fluids, using a humidifier or saline nose drops/spray)

Efficacy and Safety of Paracetamol, Phenylephrine and Chlorpheniramine maleate FDC in Common Cold
Efficacy and Safety of Paracetamol, Phenylephrine and Chlorpheniramine maleate FDC in Common Cold Side Effects 5 Views • 5 months ago

#sinarest #commoncold #fever
The fixed-dose combination of Paracetamol, Phenylephrine, and Chlorpheniramine Maleate, was shown to be effective and safe in treating common cold symptoms in Indian adults, a recent study highlighted.
These findings have been published in the November 2024 issue of the Journal of the Association of Physicians of India (JAPI).

The study was conducted across seven ENT speciality hospitals and clinics in India. 318 patients, aged 18–65 years with common cold symptoms completed the study.

Participants received the FDC containing paracetamol 500 mg, phenylephrine 10 mg, and chlorpheniramine maleate 2 mg per tablet, administered three times daily for five days. Total Symptom Score (TSS) was assessed on Days 1, 3, and 5, alongside safety evaluations.

Some of the key highlights of the study are:
1) The mean TSS decreased from 9.01 to 5.011 by Day 3 and eventually to 0.495 on Day 5.
2) The mean TSS improved significantly, with a 44.42% reduction by Day 3 and 94.51% by Day 5 compared to baseline.
3) Symptom severity decreased progressively: by Day 3, only 19 patients had severe symptoms, and by Day 5, 268 patients were completely symptom-free.
4) No serious adverse events were reported; 13 patients experienced mild side effects like drowsiness or hyperacidity, which resolved on their own without any medical intervention
Paracetamol's analgesic properties, phenylephrine's nasal decongestant effect, and chlorpheniramine's antihistaminic action contributed to rapid symptom relief.

With a high percentage of patients achieving complete relief, the study supports the efficacy and safety for FDC of paracetamol, phenylephrine, and chlorpheniramine maleate as a reliable option for treating symptoms of fever, nasal congestion, rhinorrhea, and related common cold symptoms.

Chlorpheniramine (Piriton) - Everything You Need To Know
Chlorpheniramine (Piriton) - Everything You Need To Know Side Effects 3 Views • 5 months ago

Video transcript :-
Chlorpheniramine is a first-generation antihistamine belonging to the alkylamine class.
It is widely used to treat symptoms of allergies and the common cold.
Its effects are due to its ability to antagonize histamine H1 receptors.
Major Indications Chlorpheniramine include the following.
Allergic rhinitis, also known as hay fever.
Urticaria, or hives.
Allergic conjunctivitis.
Mild allergic skin conditions such as pruritus.
And for the relief of symptoms in the common cold, including sneezing, runny nose, and itching of the throat or nose.
Chlorpheniramine works by blocking histamine H1 receptors.
Histamine is a chemical released by mast cells during allergic reactions, causing symptoms like swelling, redness, and itching.
By inhibiting these receptors, chlorpheniramine reduces the physiological effects of histamine, alleviating allergy symptoms.
Chlorpheniramine can be administered through several rotes, with the oral route being the most common one.
Tablets, syrups, or extended-release formulations are available.
Intramuscular or intravenous administration are typically used in acute allergic reactions.
Topical chlorpheniramine is sometimes included in combination formulations for skin allergies.
Chlorpheniramine is primarily metabolized in the liver by the cytochrome P450 enzymes, particularly CYP2D6.
The drug and its metabolites are excreted mainly via the kidneys in urine.
A small proportion may be excreted unchanged.
Major Adverse Effects of Chlorpheniramine include the following.
Central Nervous System effects such as Drowsiness, dizziness, fatigue, impaired coordination, and sedation due to its ability to cross the blood-brain barrier.
Anticholinergic Effects such as Dry mouth, blurred vision, constipation, and urinary retention.
Gastrointestinal Effects such as Nausea, vomiting, and abdominal discomfort.
And rarely, cardiac Effects such as Palpitations, tachycardia, or QT prolongation.
Contraindications for the use of Chlorpheniramine include the following.
Hypersensitivity, or known allergy to chlorpheniramine or other antihistamines.
Narrow-angle glaucoma, due to its anticholinergic effects, which can increase intraocular pressure.
Severe hypertension or coronary artery disease.
In newborns and premature infants due to increased sensitivity to antihistamines.
Concurrent use with monoamine oxidase inhibitors due to the risk of severe interactions, such as hypertensive crisis.
