Statins Weird Side Effects (Skin, Hormonal, Psychiatric) & Why They Occur

Statins (such as Atorvastatin, Lovastatin, Simvastatin, Rosuvastatin) are medications used to reduce or lower cholesterol levels by inhibiting the enzyme HMG-CoA reductase, which is involved in endogenous synthesis of cholesterol. However, statins can cause a wide variety of side effects, including myopathy, hepatitis, headache and many other more “weird” or “atypical” side effects, including dermatological, endocrinological, and psychiatric adverse effects, which we discuss in this lesson.

Atorvastatin Side Effects - What Are The Major Adverse Effects Of Atorvastatin
Atorvastatin Side Effects - What Are The Major Adverse Effects Of Atorvastatin Side Effects 3 Views • 5 months ago

Statins, also known as HMG Co A reductase inhibitors, are a group of medications used to prevent cardiovascular events in patients with cardiac risk factors, and abnormal lipid profiles.
They are most effective in reducing bad LDL cholesterol levels in blood.
Out of all synthetic statins, atorvastatin is the most widely used statin, and it is relatively more potent than the other types of synthetic statins.
In general, statins are well tolerated by most individuals.
They should not be taken by individuals with underlying liver disease, because these medications are metabolized by the liver.
So, in liver disease, metabolism of statins gets impaired, leading to toxicity.
Statins are contraindicated during pregnancy since they can cause birth defects in the baby.
Common side effects of statins include, muscle pain, Headache and dizziness, Sleeping problems such as insomnia, And gastro-intestinal problems such as constipation, diarrhea, and indigestion.
Some rare side effects of statins include, hepatotoxicity, Pancreatitis, Loss of hair, Reduced sex drive, and erectile dysfunction, angioedema, and rhabdomyolysis, or breakdown of muscle tissue.
Asherman syndrome is a rare condition characterized by formation of adhesions in the uterine cavity, which can lead to absent menstruation, or amenorrhea, and subfertility.

- Do not give LINZESS to children who are less than 2 years of age. It may harm them. LINZESS can cause severe diarrhea and your child could get severe dehydration (loss of a large amount of body water and salt).
- Do not take LINZESS if a doctor has told you that you have a bowel blockage (intestinal obstruction).

Before you take LINZESS, tell your doctor about your medical conditions, including if you are:
- Pregnant or plan to become pregnant. It is not known if LINZESS will harm your unborn baby.
- Breastfeeding or plan to breastfeed. You and your doctor should decide if you will take LINZESS and breastfeed.

Tell your doctor about all the medicines you take, including prescription and over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements.

Side Effects

LINZESS can cause serious side effects, including diarrhea, which is the most common side effect and can sometimes be severe. Diarrhea often begins within the first 2 weeks of LINZESS treatment. Stop taking LINZESS and call your doctor right away if you get severe diarrhea during treatment with LINZESS.

Other common side effects of LINZESS in people with IBS-C and CIC include gas, stomach-area (abdomen) pain, and swelling, or a feeling of fullness or pressure in your abdomen (distention).

Call your doctor or go to the nearest hospital emergency room right away if you develop unusual or severe stomach-area (abdomen) pain, especially if you also have bright red, bloody stools or black stools that look like tar.

These are not all the possible side effects of LINZESS. For more information, ask your doctor or pharmacist.

You are encouraged to report negative side effects of prescription drugs to the FDA. Visit https://www.fda.gov/medwatch or call 1-800-FDA-1088.

Linezolid Mechanism and Side Effects
Linezolid Mechanism and Side Effects Side Effects 3 Views • 5 months ago

Linezolid is an antibiotic medication used to treat various bacterial infections caused by susceptible strains of bacteria. It belongs to a class of antibiotics known as oxazolidinones and is commonly sold under the brand name Zyvox. Linezolid works by inhibiting protein synthesis in bacteria, preventing them from growing and multiplying.

This medication is often used to treat infections caused by methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus (VRE), which are notorious for being resistant to many other antibiotics. It can also be used for other types of bacterial infections, such as pneumonia, skin infections, and certain types of food poisoning.

Linezolid is available in both oral and intravenous (IV) forms, making it suitable for both inpatient and outpatient treatment. It is usually prescribed for a specific duration by a healthcare professional, and it's important to complete the entire course as directed, even if symptoms improve before the medication is finished.

While generally considered safe and effective, linezolid can have side effects, including nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, headache, and changes in taste. Long-term use or misuse can lead to the development of bacterial resistance or other potential complications. Therefore, it's important to use this medication only under the guidance of a qualified medical professional.

Additionally, linezolid has potential drug interactions with other medications, particularly those that affect serotonin levels in the brain, such as certain antidepressants. Therefore, it's important to inform your doctor about all medications you are currently taking before starting linezolid treatment.

As with any medication, it's important to consult a healthcare provider before using linezolid to ensure it's appropriate for your specific condition and medical history.

Lidocaine Topical System 1.8% vs Lidocaine Patch 5% - Video abstract [ID 237934]
Lidocaine Topical System 1.8% vs Lidocaine Patch 5% - Video abstract [ID 237934] Side Effects 3 Views • 5 months ago

Video abstract of an original research "A Randomized, Open-Label, Bioequivalence Study of Lidocaine Topical System 1.8% and Lidocaine Patch 5% in Healthy Subjects" https://www.dovepress.com/a-ra....ndomized-open-label- published in the open access Journal of Pain Research by Jeffrey Gudin, Charles Argoff, Jeffrey Fudin et al.

Purpose: This study was designed to characterize drug delivery with lidocaine topical
system 1.8% vs lidocaine patch 5% through 2 PK studies.

Patients and Methods: Two Phase 1, single-center, open-label, randomized PK studies
were performed in healthy adults. In Study 1, 56 subjects received a single intravenous bolus
of 0.7 mg/kg of lidocaine as a lead-in to allow for the accurate determination of apparent
dose of both products. After a 7-day washout period, subjects were randomized to receive
either lidocaine topical system 1.8% or lidocaine patch 5% for 12 hours followed by another
7-day washout period, after which subjects crossed over to receive the other treatment for 12 hours.

In Study 2, 54 subjects were randomized to receive either lidocaine topical system
1.8% or lidocaine patch 5% for 12 hours. After a 7-day washout period, subjects crossed over
to receive the other treatment. Adhesion and skin irritation assessments were performed after application of the products in Study 2. In both studies, serial blood samples were collected to measure the plasma concentration of lidocaine after product application. Safety assessments and adverse events were monitored in both studies.

Results: The comparative PK analysis demonstrated that the two products, despite their
difference in drug load and strength, are bioequivalent. Both products were well tolerated. In
Study 2, dermal response scores (skin tolerability after removal) were similar between
lidocaine topical system 1.8% and lidocaine patch 5%, with a mean irritation score per
patch <1 (barely perceptible erythema), which is not considered to be clinically significant.

Conclusion: Bioequivalence was demonstrated between lidocaine topical system 1.8% and
lidocaine patch 5%. A comparison of the single-time adhesion scores at 12 hours in Study 2
favored lidocaine topical system 1.8% over lidocaine patch 5%. Both products were well
tolerated as a single application in healthy adult human subjects.

ClinicalTrials.gov: NCT04144192, NCT04149938.

Signs You Can Stop Taking Thyroid Medication
Signs You Can Stop Taking Thyroid Medication Side Effects 3 Views • 5 months ago

Early research suggests that up to 30% of thyroid patients currently taking thyroid medication may not need it. That's great and all but what does that mean for you? How can you tell if you are in that lucky 30%? Well, if you've ever wondered about that I've got some good news for you:

We have some signs that, if present, indicate that you have a higher likelihood of getting off of your thyroid medication. In addition to these positive signs, we also have some negative ones as well and today I'm going to go over both.

Before we jump in, you should be aware that this data is still emerging so it's subject to change as we get more information. If it does change then you can bet I will provide you with that updated information but, for now, this is what we have.

These positive signs indicate you have a higher likelihood of getting off and staying off of thyroid medication:

- If you've been using thyroid medication for less than 4 years.
- If you had a normal free T4 on diagnosis.
- If your current TSH is less than 1.8.
- If you are taking a low dose of thyroid medication (usually less than 50 mcg).
- If you are a woman (women are 2x more likely to get off their thyroid medication).

These are unfavorable signs:

- If you have a heterogenous thyroid on ultrasound.
- If you have positive thyroid peroxidase antibodies with diffuse echogenicity on thyroid ultrasound.
- If your TSH was greater than 8 at the time of diagnosis.
- If your treated TSH is greater than 9.
- If you were diagnosed at a young age.
- If you had a positive thyroglobulin antibody level at the time of diagnosis.

The presence or absence of any of these signs doesn't guarantee anything so don't get discouraged if you have a lot of negative signs and few positive signs.

Side Effects of T2 Thyroid Hormone: Is It Dangerous?
Side Effects of T2 Thyroid Hormone: Is It Dangerous? Side Effects 3 Views • 5 months ago

T2 thyroid hormone, also known as 3,5 diiodo-l-thyronine, is gaining a lot of attention among thyroid patients, and for good reason.

As far as thyroid hormones are concerned, T2 plays a major role in regulating metabolism, cholesterol metabolism, and heat production, making it the ideal treatment if you are suffering from hypothyroid-related weight gain as well as high cholesterol.

For this reason, many thyroid patients are wondering if it's right for them and they've been asking a lot of questions:

Is T2 thyroid hormone safe?
What are the side effects?
And should I try it?

Well, this video is going to shed light on all of those.

First, we have no reason to suspect that T2 thyroid hormone is harmful because thyroid patients have been using it for over 70 years. This is because T2 is found in small amounts in NDT thyroid medications like Armour thyroid.

What about side effects? Based on the over 10,000 thyroid patients who have used my T2 supplement, here's what I've found:

Roughly 70-75% see some benefit when taking it. Roughly 5-10% see no discernable benefit and roughly 10-15% of patients see some minor negative side effect when taking it.

So, should you give T2 a try? That depends on how you are feeling.

If you are a thyroid patient who is currently feeling lousy despite taking your thyroid medication every day then, yeah, giving it a try may be a good idea.

In addition, if you are a thyroid patient suffering from the inability to lose weight then that's another reason to consider giving it a try.

Side Effects of Iodine Supplements & What They Mean
Side Effects of Iodine Supplements & What They Mean Side Effects 3 Views • 5 months ago

Having trouble getting iodine supplements into your body? If so, this episode is for you. While most people who take iodine supplements will have absolutely no issues, there are a handful of people who may experience negative side effects.

But what causes these side effects? Why do some people react negatively to something that your body needs and uses on a daily basis?

Even though iodine is required to produce thyroid hormone, there are some situations in which it may result in unwanted symptoms.

There is always an answer for these symptoms, though, so don't blame iodine right away! Often, the cause is not iodine itself but other problems that already exist in your body.

Here are some symptoms that patients may experience while taking iodine supplements:

- Acne-like pustules
- Racing heart
- Sweating
- Headaches
- Fatigue
- Changes to your weight
- Nausea
- Stomach pain
- Metallic taste in the mouth
- Joint pain or muscle pain
- Changes to your hair, skin, or nails
- Thyroid gland pain
- Swelling in the neck
- Other symptoms of hyperthyroidism
- Other symptoms of hypothyroidism

Iodine can have an impact on thyroid function so it shouldn't come as a surprise that some people who use iodine notice changes in their thyroid!

These changes can result in symptoms ranging from hyperthyroidism (rare) to worsening hypothyroidism (rare) and even detox reactions like acne from the elimination of halides.

The good news is that there is an explanation for these side effects and they aren't all bad.

Have you had issues in taking iodine supplements? If so, let me know below!

Heidi Barnes Heller, DVM, DACVIM (Neurology), clinical associate professor of neurology/neurosurgery at the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Veterinary Medicine, conducted a study on the efficacy of extended release levetiracetam in cats. Here, she explains how the drug works.

"Extended-release are the ones that we give as a pill they are formulated by pharmaceutical companies into a certain formulation that allows them to have extended release properties. They're taken orally but they are extended release because they are more slowly released into the body, in theory, thus allowing you to provide a lower dosing frequency—so the interval between dosing is less.

So going from a standard release, which is not extended release, that's 3 times a day dosing, we've been able to go down to once a day dosing use an extended release pill in cats for this particular drug, which is called levetiracetam. It is a pre formulated drug made by the pharmaceutical company, if you modify it, break it, chew it, crush it, you ruin or disrupt the extended release. So you have to be careful how you handle those pills. That also means that there's only several sizes made and a cat is wee tiny, so up until this point, we really haven't used extended release for cats because they oftentimes don't fit the dosing size for that particular milligram.

And so for example, we'll use extended release levetiracetam in cats and the dose they should be taking for an average or maybe slightly large, 5 kilogram cat would be something in the range of 50 to 60 milligrams three times a day, and so that's about 20 milligrams per kilogram is the dose that we use. To use extended release they're getting about a 100 milligrams per kilogram, which is 500 milligrams per dose, so a significantly higher dose but it extends out how its released and so you don't have as much of a worry about toxicity, at least in our studies."
