Learn furosemide side effects from a pharmacist. In this video, the pharmacist focuses his discussion on the top 5 side effects of furosemide. To start off, the brand name for furosemide is “Lasix” and the name stems from the fact that furosemide (and other medications in the same drug class-loop diuretics) has a duration of action of approximately six hours (i.e., “Lasts six” = Lasix). This is important information, especially when considering the time of administration. Furosemide should be administered in the morning shortly after waking. The pharmacist strongly recommends against taking furosemide at bedtime to avoid frequent urges to urinate while sleeping. While furosemide is very effective at ridding the body of excess fluid, several electrolytes can be lost in the process. The most common electrolyte that is depleted is potassium, but loss of some magnesium and calcium is also expected. For this reason, some doctors co-prescribe a potassium supplement with furosemide. It should be noted that over-the-counter (non-prescription) potassium supplements are relatively useless as the dose of potassium provided is very low. Prescription potassium supplements, on the other hand, are very effective as they contain a much higher dose of potassium that is slowly and safely released using an extended-release mechanism. Regardless of supplementation, it is important for people taking furosemide to eat a nutrient-rich diet, aiming for 8-10 servings of fresh or frozen fruits and vegetables per day. A less commonly discussed side effect of furosemide is “photosensitivity” (which is a predisposition to sunburn). For that reason, when taking furosemide, the liberal application of a SPF50+ sunscreen is highly recommended. The pharmacist has consulted a dermatologist to recommend the following facial sunscreen: https://amzn.to/3Wxjxsn (Cetaphil SPF 50)
Also, because furosemide lowers blood pressure, routine at-home blood pressure monitoring is advised. The pharmacist recommends the following blood pressure monitor: https://amzn.to/3PyC19G (OMRON Series 3 Blood Pressure Monitor).
If you prefer a more advanced blood pressure monitor with smartphone compatibility, the pharmacist recommends: https://amzn.to/3uwH6Fv (QardioArm Wireless Blood Pressure Monitor).
Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) should be avoided while using furosemide. Common examples of NSAIDs include Advil®, Motrin® (ibuprofen) and Aleve® (naproxen). NSAIDs can counteract the effect of furosemide and also stress and potentially injure the kidney when used in combination with furosemide. If you're in need of over-the-counter pain relief, then consider the following as an alternative to NSAIDs: https://amzn.to/3FIo0l3 (Extra Strength Tylenol® (acetaminophen))

BETAMETHASONE belongs to a class of drugs called corticosteroids primarily used to prevent allergies including swelling, itching redness, heat, and pain caused due to certain skin problems such as psoriasis (scales and itchy, dry patches), dermatitis (itchy, swelling of the skin) and eczema (itchy, cracked, swollen or rough skin). The swelling of the skin occurs when an allergic reaction or skin irritation releases several substances in the skin that widens blood vessels and cause itching, redness, pain, and swelling in the irritated area.
BETAMETHASONE is a steroid that works by acting inside skin cells and inhibiting the release of certain chemical messengers in the body that cause redness, itching, and swelling. When the skin reacts to any type of allergens, such chemicals are released normally.

Can Triamcinolone Treat Allergies? In this informative video, we will discuss the role of triamcinolone in managing allergy symptoms, particularly those affecting the nasal passages. Triamcinolone, especially in its acetonide form, is a corticosteroid known for its effective anti-inflammatory properties. We will explore how this medication works to alleviate common allergy symptoms such as nasal congestion, sneezing, and a runny nose.
You’ll learn about the administration of triamcinolone as an intranasal spray, making it a convenient option for those dealing with allergic rhinitis. We will also address the benefits and limitations of using triamcinolone, including its ability to provide quick relief from symptoms without causing systemic side effects at standard doses. However, it’s important to note that while it can manage symptoms effectively, it does not cure allergies or provide a long-term solution like immunotherapy.
Additionally, we will touch on how triamcinolone's anti-inflammatory properties can indirectly assist in alleviating discomfort related to allergic reactions, such as sinus pressure or headaches. For a tailored approach to allergy management, consulting a healthcare professional is essential. The CDC is planning to recommend an antibiotic pill for some to take after sex to prevent the spread of sexually transmitted infections. The move comes after recent studies found some people who took doxycycline within three days of unprotected sex were less likely to get chlamydia, syphilis or gonorrhea. Dr. Rhoda Sperling, a professor at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, joined CBS News to discuss the planned guidelines.
