Drug Cards Daily | Episode #25: carisoprodol (Soma) | Short Term Benefit For Discomfort of Musculoskeletal Conditions

Carisoprodol is a skeletal muscle relaxant that is most commonly known as the brand name Soma. The lesser known brand name is Vanadom. This drug has benefits in treating discomfort experienced from acute painful skeletal muscle conditions over a 2-3 week duration of therapy. The benefits beyond a short term duration (2-3 weeks) has not been proven. There are two strengths in a tablet form being 250 mg and 350 mg. The medication is dose qid with tid in addition to at bedtime. Carisoprodol forms the metabolite meprobamate which has anxiolytic and sedative effects. Since CYP2C19 function is crucial to the metabolism to meprobamate it is important to be aware of drugs that may affect CYP2C19 function along with other factors such as race and gender. Asian and African Americans are of note since there is higher prevalence of poor CYP2C19 metabolizer function. Also females generally have a higher exposure to carisoprodol but not to the metabolized form of meprobamate. When monitoring patients it is important to be aware of signs of misuse and abuse along with assessing their mental status along with their level or relief regarding pain and muscle spasms.

Part 1: What is Overactive Bladder or OAB? Side Effects 4 Views • 5 months ago

Learn about overactive bladder (OAB) and OAB symptoms which include urinary urgency, frequency, and leakage.

Even though overactive bladder, including urge urinary incontinence, may affect 1 in 6 US adults, a lot of people aren't sure what OAB is. They might think it's just a sign of getting older, or that they can't do anything about those "embarrassing" leaks. But OAB is a real medical condition that results from the involuntary contraction of the bladder muscle.

Dr. Kelly L. Reed is a family physician based in Urbandale, Iowa. She treats patients with overactive bladder (OAB), and has a lot of insight to share on ways to manage and treat OAB symptoms, and how to help patients have productive conversations with their doctors. The information provided should not be considered medical advice or diagnosis. This information does not take the place of talking with your doctor about your medical condition or treatment. Low Sodium (Hyponatremia): Dangers, Symptoms, and Causes Explained By Dr.Berg
Low Sodium (Hyponatremia): Dangers, Symptoms, and Causes Explained By Dr.Berg Side Effects 4 Views • 5 months ago

Here’s why eliminating salt from your diet can be detrimental to your health!

0:00 Low sodium (hyponatremia): dangers, symptoms, and causes
0:14 Symptoms of low sodium
0:40 Why you shouldn’t avoid all salt
1:17 Causes of low sodium

In this video, we’re going to talk about the dangers of low sodium, also known as hyponatremia.

Hyponatremia is a situation where you’re losing a lot of blood volume, which can result in low blood pressure and a lot of other problems.

The symptoms of low sodium include:
• Edema in the brain
• Headaches
• Nausea
• Muscle cramps
• Fainting
• Falling
• Loss of appetite
• Confusion
• Coma
• Cardiovascular disease
• Stroke

Many people believe salt is bad for them and they avoid using any salt in their food. The problem is that this can result in low sodium. You need at least 1-1.2 grams of sodium each day, or 2-5 grams of salt per day.

Keep in mind that salt can be hidden in many foods. It’s important to find the right balance since too much and too little can have adverse effects.

Low sodium can also be caused by…
• Diuretics
• Vomiting
• Diarrhea
• Excessive sweating
• Kidney damage
• Excessive H2O
• Adrenal weakness

Many people drink way too much water because they are convinced it’s healthy. Excessive water consumption can deplete minerals like sodium. Drink when you are thirsty—don’t force yourself to drink water.

10:22 Learn more about the benefits of baking soda!

Today we’re going to talk about the dangers and benefits of baking soda.

Baking soda is sodium bicarbonate. Your body actually makes sodium bicarbonate.

Different parts of the body have different pH levels. Even different parts of your digestive tract require different pH levels.

Sodium bicarbonate helps decrease the acid in your small intestine, which increases the pH and supports important digestive enzymes. If I needed to take enzymes, I would also take baking soda to help activate the enzymes.

Baking soda may also be helpful in certain cases for people with acid reflux or heartburn. However, it shouldn’t be taken often or over a long period of time.

Chronic consumption of baking soda can lead to certain side effects, including:
• Bloating
• Gas
• Acid rebound

A better remedy for acid reflux or heartburn might be betaine hydrochloride or apple cider vinegar. This is because the typical root cause of these issues is actually a lack of stomach acid.

But, if someone has an ulcer or gastritis, betaine hydrochloride or apple cider vinegar will cause irritation. In these situations, baking soda might provide some relief.

Some interesting research is even being done on sodium bicarbonate for cancer.

Baking soda may also be beneficial for:
• Skin allergies
• Sinus problems
• Gout attacks
• Improving athletic performance

Overall, baking soda is a great potential remedy for certain problems. However, it’s also important to ask yourself why you need to take a natural remedy in the first place and work to fix the root cause of the issue.

Skyrizi: Debunking Common Misconceptions and Exploring Potential Side Effects
Skyrizi: Debunking Common Misconceptions and Exploring Potential Side Effects Side Effects 4 Views • 5 months ago

In the realm of medical advancements, Skyrizi has emerged as a notable medication for the treatment of psoriasis. However, like any medication, it has been subject to various misconceptions and concerns. This article aims to shed light on Skyrizi, debunk common misconceptions surrounding it, and provide an in-depth exploration of its potential side effects.

1. Understanding Psoriasis
Psoriasis is a chronic skin condition characterized by the rapid buildup of skin cells, resulting in red, itchy, and scaly patches on the skin. It is an autoimmune disease with various triggers and manifestations.

2. Introduction to Skyrizi
Skyrizi, known by its generic name risankizumab, is a biologic medication used to treat moderate to severe plaque psoriasis in adults. It belongs to a class of drugs called interleukin inhibitors, specifically targeting interleukin-23 (IL-23), a cytokine involved in the immune response.

3. Common Misconceptions
Misconception 1: Skyrizi Cures Psoriasis Permanently
While Skyrizi is highly effective in managing psoriasis and can lead to significant improvement or even complete clearance of symptoms, it is not a permanent cure. Psoriasis can have periods of remission and flare-ups, and ongoing treatment may be necessary to maintain control.

Misconception 2: Skyrizi Is Unsafe Due to Being a Biologic Medication
Biologic medications like Skyrizi are thoroughly tested and approved by regulatory agencies for safety and efficacy. Their targeted approach to treating psoriasis often results in fewer side effects compared to traditional systemic treatments.

4. Exploring Potential Side Effects
While Skyrizi is generally considered safe and well-tolerated, like any medication, it can have potential side effects. It's important to note that not everyone will experience these, and the benefits of the treatment usually outweigh the risks. Some potential side effects include:

Upper Respiratory Infections: Common symptoms may include a sore throat, stuffy or runny nose, and sinus congestion.
Fatigue: Some individuals may experience increased tiredness or lack of energy.
Injection Site Reactions: Redness, pain, or swelling at the injection site can occur.
5. Managing and Minimizing Risks
To manage potential side effects and minimize risks, it's essential to follow the prescribed dosage and administration instructions precisely. Regular communication with a healthcare provider and reporting any unusual symptoms promptly can help ensure a safe and effective treatment experience.

6. Conclusion: Skyrizi - A Step Toward Psoriasis Management
Skyrizi has proven to be a significant advancement in the treatment of psoriasis, providing relief to many individuals suffering from this chronic skin condition. By understanding the truth about Skyrizi, debunking common misconceptions, and being aware of potential side effects, individuals can make informed decisions regarding their treatment and work towards better psoriasis management.

Pharmacology of Sitagliptin ; Mechanism of action, Pharmacokinetics, Uses, Effects
Pharmacology of Sitagliptin ; Mechanism of action, Pharmacokinetics, Uses, Effects Side Effects 4 Views • 5 months ago

Sitagliptin is an oral antihyperglycemic agent used to treat type 2 diabetes mellitus. Here are some key points about its pharmacology:

Mechanism of Action
Sitagliptin is a dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) inhibitor. It works by inhibiting the DPP-4 enzyme, which is responsible for the degradation of incretin hormones such as glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) and glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP). By preventing the breakdown of these hormones, sitagliptin increases their levels, leading to enhanced insulin secretion in response to meals and improved glycemic control.

Pharmacokinetics
Absorption: Sitagliptin is well absorbed orally, with peak plasma concentrations typically occurring within 1 to 4 hours after ingestion.

Metabolism: It is extensively metabolized in the liver to inactive metabolites.

Excretion: The metabolites are excreted in the urine (80%) and feces.

Elimination Half-Life: The half-life is approximately 8 to 14 hours.

Indications
Sitagliptin is indicated as an adjunct to diet and exercise to improve glycemic control in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus. It is also available in combination with metformin (Janumet) and other antidiabetic medications1.

Dosage
Adults: The usual dose is 100 mg once daily, taken with or without food.

Administration: Take sitagliptin at the same time each day to help you remember.

Side Effects
Common: Headache, upper respiratory tract infection, and swelling of the legs.

Serious: Hypoglycemia (especially when used with other antidiabetic medications), pancreatitis, and allergic reactions.

Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to sitagliptin or any of its components.

Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus: Not for treating type 1 diabetes mellitus.

Diabetic Ketoacidosis: Not for treating diabetic ketoacidosis.

Special Precautions
Hypoglycemia: Monitor blood glucose levels regularly and be cautious with dosing to avoid hypoglycemia.

Pancreatitis: Be aware of the signs and symptoms of pancreatitis and discontinue use if pancreatitis is suspected

Sitagliptin Tablets: Uses, Dosage, Mechanism, Side Effects & Important Advice | MediInsights
Sitagliptin Tablets: Uses, Dosage, Mechanism, Side Effects & Important Advice | MediInsights Side Effects 4 Views • 5 months ago

Welcome to MediInsights, where we unlock the wonders of wellness! In this comprehensive video, we'll explore everything you need to know about Sitagliptin tablets, a powerful medication for managing type 2 diabetes.

Introduction to Sitagliptin Tablets:
Sitagliptin tablets are a commonly prescribed medication for individuals with type 2 diabetes mellitus. They help regulate blood sugar levels when diet and exercise alone aren't sufficient.

Uses of Sitagliptin Tablets:
Sitagliptin is used to improve blood sugar control in adults with type 2 diabetes. It can be used alone or in combination with other diabetes medications to enhance its effectiveness.

Dosage of Sitagliptin Tablets:
The standard dosage for Sitagliptin is 100 mg once daily. It can be taken with or without food, making it convenient for daily use. For those with renal impairment, dosage adjustments are necessary. Always follow your healthcare provider's specific dosage instructions.

Mechanism of Action:
Sitagliptin works by inhibiting the enzyme dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4). This inhibition increases the levels of incretin hormones, which stimulate the pancreas to produce more insulin and reduce the amount of glucose produced by the liver. This dual action helps lower blood sugar levels, particularly after meals.

Side Effects of Sitagliptin Tablets:
Common side effects include upper respiratory infections, headaches, and nasopharyngitis. Although rare, serious side effects can occur, such as pancreatitis, severe allergic reactions, and kidney problems. It's important to monitor for any unusual symptoms and report them to your healthcare provider immediately.

Important Advice for Using Sitagliptin Tablets:

Take as Prescribed: Ensure you take Sitagliptin exactly as your doctor has prescribed.
Monitor Blood Sugar Levels: Regularly check your blood sugar levels to track your progress.
Inform Your Doctor: Let your healthcare provider know about any other medications or supplements you are taking to avoid potential interactions.
Be Aware of Pancreatitis Symptoms: Watch for signs of pancreatitis, such as severe abdominal pain, and seek immediate medical attention if they occur.
Maintain a Healthy Lifestyle: Combine your medication with a balanced diet and regular exercise for optimal results.
Conclusion:
Sitagliptin tablets play a crucial role in managing type 2 diabetes by effectively controlling blood sugar levels. Always consult your healthcare provider for personalized advice and guidance.

This video is about Montelukast. Montelukast is a medication primarily used to manage allergies and asthma. It belongs to a class of drugs called leukotriene receptor antagonists (LTRAs). Leukotrienes are chemicals in the body that promote inflammation, bronchoconstriction (narrowing of the airways), and mucus production. Montelukast works by blocking the action of leukotrienes, helping to reduce inflammation and relax the muscles around the airways, making it easier to breathe.

Montelukast is commonly prescribed for the prevention and long-term management of asthma, particularly in individuals aged 6 months and older. It is also used to relieve symptoms of seasonal allergies (hay fever) and allergic rhinitis, including sneezing, runny nose, and itchy or watery eyes. Additionally, it can help in preventing exercise-induced bronchoconstriction.

The medication is available in tablet form, chewable tablets, and oral granules, making it suitable for both adults and children. It is typically taken once a day, in the evening, either with or without food.

While montelukast is generally well-tolerated, side effects can occur, including headaches, stomach upset, and, in rare cases, mood changes such as anxiety or depression. It is important for individuals taking montelukast to be monitored for any unusual behavioral changes, especially in children and adolescents.

In summary, montelukast is an effective treatment for managing asthma and allergic symptoms, offering a convenient oral solution with a generally good safety profile when used as directed.

BILASTINE+MONTELUKAST belongs to a class of medication called 'anti-allergic medication, primarily used to treat allergic conditions like sneezing, runny nose, congestion, stuffy nose or watery eyes. An allergy is a condition that occurs when the immune system reacts to a foreign substance that is typically not harmful to your body. These foreign substances are known as 'allergens' Some might be allergic to certain foods and seasonal allergies like hay fever, pollen, or pet dander. One of the main symptoms of allergy is cough, which acts as a reflex action in the throat when mucus or foreign irritant enters the respiratory system.

BILASTINE+MONTELUKAST combines two drugs: Montelukast (leukotriene receptor antagonist) and Bilastine (antihistamine). Montelukast belongs to the class of leukotriene receptor antagonists that block the action of chemicals called leukotrienes released from the lungs, causing inflammation (swelling) and increased mucus production in the airways. Thereby reducing inflammation, mucus production, and narrowing in the airways. Bilastine belongs to the class of antihistamines (anti-allergic drugs) that works by blocking the action of histamine, a substance responsible for causing allergic reactions. It helps relieve allergy symptoms such as sneezing, running nose, watery eyes, itching, swelling, congestion, or stiffness.

Inform your doctor if you are allergic to BILASTINE+MONTELUKAST or other medicines. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, it is advised to inform your doctor before using BILASTINE+MONTELUKAST. BILASTINE+MONTELUKAST is not recommended for children below 12 years of age. If you notice mood changes causing depression, self-harming thoughts, or aggressive behaviour while on BILASTINE+MONTELUKAST, please consult a doctor immediately. It is advised to maintain 2 hours gap between taking BILASTINE+MONTELUKAST and indigestion remedies containing magnesium and aluminium, as taking these medicines simultaneously may reduce the absorption of BILASTINE+MONTELUKAST.
