Statins, also known as HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors, are a class of lipid-lowering medications that reduce illness and mortality in those who are at high risk of cardiovascular disease. They are the most common cholesterol-lowering drugs.

Low-density lipoprotein (LDL) carriers of cholesterol play a key role in the development of atherosclerosis and coronary heart disease via the mechanisms described by the lipid hypothesis. Statins are effective in lowering LDL cholesterol and so are widely used for primary prevention in people at high risk of cardiovascular disease, as well as in secondary prevention for those who have developed cardiovascular disease.

Side effects of statins include muscle pain, increased risk of diabetes mellitus, and abnormal blood levels of liver enzymes. Additionally, they have rare but severe adverse effects, particularly muscle damage. They inhibit the enzyme HMG-CoA reductase which plays a central role in the production of cholesterol. High cholesterol levels have been associated with cardiovascular disease.

There are various forms of statins, some of which include atorvastatin, fluvastatin, lovastatin, pitavastatin, pravastatin, rosuvastatin, and simvastatin. Combination preparations of a statin and another agent, such as ezetimibe/simvastatin, are also available. The class is on the World Health Organization's List of Essential Medicines with simvastatin being the listed medicine. In 2005, sales were estimated at US$18.7 billion in the United States. The best-selling statin is atorvastatin, also known as Lipitor, which in 2003 became the best-selling pharmaceutical in history. The manufacturer Pfizer reported sales of US$12.4 billion in 2008.Due to patent expirations, several statins became available in 2016 as less expensive generics.

Side Effects of Blood Thinners-Dr. Nida Najmi (Urdu)
Side Effects of Blood Thinners-Dr. Nida Najmi (Urdu) Side Effects 3 Views • 5 months ago

Blood thinners have the potential to cause serious side effects if they are not used properly. Too much amount of blood thinner increases your chances to bleed while too little amount of blood thinner in the body will result in clotting of blood.

The major side effect of blood thinners is bleeding. This bleeding is of two types. Minor bleeding and Major bleeding.

Minor bleeding includes gum bleeding, occasional nose bleeds prolonged bleeding after minor cuts, and easy bruising.

Major bleeding includes red or dark-brown urine, red or black tarry stools, vomiting or coughing up blood, severe headache or stomachache, unexplained bruising, frequent gums, and nose bleeds, or any continuous or excessive bleeding.

Same as increased levels of blood thinners or anticoagulants can cause bleeding, too low levels of anticoagulants in the blood can lead to the formation of a clot.

Symptoms of clotting include sudden weakness, pain, swelling or heat in any limb, numbness or tingling anywhere, visual changes or loss of sight in either eye, sudden onset of slurred speech or inability to speak, dizziness or faintness, and shortness of breath.

If you experience any of the above signs and symptoms of bleeding or clotting, contact your doctor or your anticoagulation service provider or visit the near emergency room.

Over-the-counter sleep aids
Over-the-counter sleep aids Side Effects 4 Views • 5 months ago

The active ingredient of the otc sleeping medications is either doxylamine or diphenhydramine. Both doxylamine and diphenhydramine are First Generation antihistamines. These antihistamines can cross the blood-brain barrier and have anticholinergic activity. Therefore, They can cause significant side effects.
The side effects include: Next-day drowsiness, constipation, dizziness, difficulty urinating, blurry vision, confusion, impaired coordination, paradoxical excitation, headache, dry mouth, nose, and/or throat etc.
Alcohol should be avoided when taking these medications because alcohol can aggravate the side effects of the medications. In addition, you should not combine OTC sleep drugs with other medications that contain 1st generation antihistamines such as Benadryl. Long-term use of diphenhydramine or benadryl has been associated with an increased risk of dementia.

The American Academy of Sleep Medicine does not recommend the use of diphenhydramine for insomnia. Similarly, doxylamine is not recommended for insomnia treatment either.
The American Geriatrics Society also advises against the use of these OTC sleep drugs in people 65 and older because of risks such as confusion, constipation, dry mouth, and cognitive decline.
The American Academy of Sleep Medicine does not recommend the use of melatonin, tryptophan or valerian as a treatment for insomnia in adults.

Cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia provided by a counselor or a psychotherapist is recommended as a first-line treatment for insomnia.
OTC Sleeping medications may be used occasionally as adjunct treatment.
Routine use of otc sleeping medications for more than 2 weeks is not recommended
