Brain zaps are part of what we call medication discontinuation syndrome. Medication discontinuation syndrome are symptoms that you can see when you suddenly stop your medication.

In this case were talking about what you see when you stop the serotonin enhancing antidepressants.

An easy way to remember these symptoms is with the mnemonic FINISH
F - Flulike symptoms.
I - insomnia.
N - nausea or maybe even vomiting.
I - imbalance like dizziness or even vertigo like your head is spinning.
S - sensory disturbances and that would be the electric shocks that seem to be coming from your brain.
H - for hyperarousal and this would be anxiety, irritability, aggression or even jerkiness.

In this video, Doctor O'Donovan explains key things you need to know about abuterol (salbutamol) - a medication used to help with asthma.

Other names for albuterol include Accuneb, ProAir Digihaler, ProAir HFA., Proair Respiclick, Proventil, Proventil HFA, ReliOn Ventolin HFA and Ventolin.

What is Albuterol?

Albuterol, also known as salbutamol outside the United States, is a medication that belongs to a class of drugs called bronchodilators. It is commonly used to relieve symptoms of asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), such as shortness of breath, wheezing, and coughing.

How Does Albuterol Work?
Albuterol works by relaxing the muscles in the airways, which helps open up the breathing passages and makes it easier to breathe. It acts on beta-2 adrenergic receptors in the lungs, causing the bronchial muscles to relax and widen the airways.

Common Uses of Albuterol include:

- Asthma: To relieve acute asthma symptoms or prevent exercise-induced asthma.
- COPD: To manage symptoms and improve airflow in chronic conditions like chronic bronchitis or emphysema.

Exciting news in women's healthcare is that a new non-hormonal drug named Veozah was FDA approved in May to treat vasomotor symptoms (also known as hot flashes and night sweats) for menopausal women. While this is no doubt an exciting development, I will be discussing who this might be appropriate for, and why it is not nearly as beneficial as estradiol for patients who are candidates for hormone replacement.

Dealing with menopause? The FDA approved Veozah on Friday, it's expected to hit the market this summer.

Diane Hoard’s menopause symptoms started at age fifty and sometimes became debilitating.

"They were happening every half hour, all day and all night, they were relentless," she said.

Her hot flashes impact her concentration, sleep and even work.

"You’re worried about when it's going to happen and you're miserable while it's happening and you can't just get up and walk away," Diane said.

Estrogen therapy worked wonders, but she had to stop after a breast cancer diagnosis. Her menopause symptoms came back with a vengeance.

"Most days I feel like a train wreck," she said.

She was thrilled to learn about Veozah.

The FDA approved the drug Friday to treat menopausal hot flashes in women who can’t or choose not to do Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT).

Patients who have taken diabetes drugs for years are now scrambling to find their next dose as some medications are in short supply, largely because they're helping people lose weight.

“Yes, there is an extreme shortage and that's not really good for the people who actually need it,” said Dr. Steven Edelman, a UC San Diego endocrinologist who heads the non-profit, Taking Control of Your Diabetes (TCOYD).

One of the biggest medical stories of 2023 was the surge in prescription medication for weight loss. Type 2 diabetes drugs were already being used off label for weight loss, but with the FDA's approval to use these medications to treat obesity, the demand skyrocketed.

Two big studies came out of Case Western Reserve University on the wildly popular weight loss drugs with glucagon-like peptide-1 (glp-1) receptor agonists.

The first found the drugs may reduce risk of colorectal cancer, in both people with diabetes and obesity.

The second, found semaglutide, that’s in Wegovy and Ozempic, had a significantly lower risk of suicidal thoughts compared to others.

Previously a Cleveland Clinic study found semaglutide, found in Wegovy and Ozemic, cut the risk of severe heart problems.

However, the FDA is looking into reports of adverse side effects that were self-reported. Some users claim some of these new drugs caused suicidal thoughts, hair loss and airway obstruction.

The most common side effects are nausea, constipation and pancreatitis.
