Study this Metronidazole mnemonic for NCLEX and other mnemonics with Pixorize.
Metronidazole is an antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections, including clostridium difficile and trichomoniasis. When taken concurrently with alcohol, it can cause a disulfiram-like reaction so patients should avoid alcohol while taking the drug. Metronidazole can cause a host of harmless side effects, including metallic taste in the mouth and reddish-brown urine discoloration. Both of these side effects are expected and benign, so patients should be consoled to not worry about them when they occur.

That’s why the right medication depends on how long you’ve had AFib, the condition of your heart, and your other health issues. In this video, we break it down from weakest to strongest, starting with flecainide—great for early AFib, but not safe for everyone. Know the difference. Know what’s safe for you.

Dr. Kneller discusses discuses treatment strategies for atrial fibrillation. Considerations include rhythm control (stopping and preventing atrial fibrillation) and rate control (slowing down the rapid heart rate caused by atrial fibrillation, without attempting to restore a normal rhythm), and whether systemic anticoagulation medication (ie, Xarelto, Eliquis, Pradaxa, or warfarin) is needed. Anti-arrhythmic medications (ie, flecainide, propafenone, sotalol, tikosyn) or catheter ablation are used to restore normal rhythm.

What are the side effects of prostate cancer radiation? In this short video, Steven G. Lester, M.D., F.A.C.R.O., a board-certified radiation oncologist, at Central Florida Cancer Care Center describes how prostate cancer patients can plan for radiation treatment.
“Today we're discussing will you lose your hair with prostate radiation?” says Dr. Lester. “And the answer is no because we're not aiming at your head. You lose hair with radiation based on where we aim, and I don't think I've ever had a patient complain of losing a little bit of pubic hair.”
“What you want to know is what are the side effects of prostate radiation,” Dr. Lester continues. “And they're really pretty minimal. After a couple of weeks, you'll notice your gland is a little irritated which results in a little more frequent urination and some urgency. Part of the urgency with our process is that we always ask our patients to come in with their bladder full. Therefore, you're drinking more fluids than usual, and you're going to have to empty (your bladder) more often. We usually can manage the side effects with a medication like Flomax if it becomes too symptomatic.”
“You get some bowel irritation from radiation, but now with the newer techniques using an IMRT IGRT, we treat less rectum, so you have less bowel irritation. You will get a little bowel urgency. You don't get diarrhea from prostate radiation because we only treat about a two-inch segment of the front of the rectum. Fatigue is common, but that fatigue is usually pretty minimal. You might need a cat nap after the fourth or fifth week every afternoon. I find the patients who are really tired have better tolerance to treatments because they are not trying to work 40 hours a week.”
“So those are the main side effects one sees during treatment,” Dr. Lester concludes. “We're always available during therapy to see our patients on any day if some side effects should develop, but what you should know is that you can continue with a normal lifestyle during treatment.”

Another question about Seretide is what are the side effects? As with most inhalers, Seretide Diskus has very few side effects which many times also result from taking the inhaler incorrectly (poor inhaler technique). Most inhalers actually are very safe, with very rare adverse effects due to the low amount of medication they contain. Because the medication directly reaches the airways where it needs to act, you don't require a lot of it to control potentially severe conditions.

Dr. Pagnani of Rittenhouse Psychiatric Associates discusses that for the treatment of OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder) sometimes augmenting a primary medication with a second medication can be effective at controlling symptoms. Traditionally, clomipramine (a tricyclic antidepressant or TCA) has been added to luvox (fluvoxamine, an SSRI) for some patients with treatment resistant OCD. With that said, these medications can result in significant side effects and it is important to always be under the care of a mental health professional familiar with this type of treatment, when considering these types of options.
Dr. Pagnani is the founder and medical director of Rittenhouse Psychiatric Associates, an Instructor at The Johns Hopkins Hospital for the Department of Psychiatry, he supervises psychiatric residents at Jefferson Hospital, he serves on the Young Professional Board of Uplift, the Center for Grieving Children and he maintains a private practice of Psychiatry in Philadelphia where he sees patients for one-time psychiatric evaluations and second opinions. He is a licensed physician and surgeon in NJ, PA, NY, MD, DE, FL and CA and can provide consultations to individuals via HIPAA compliant Telehealth visits living in these locations.
Rittenhouse Psychiatric Associates is a private practice of psychiatry consisting of about 25 psychiatrists, psychiatric nurse practitioners and psychotherapists with physical locations in Philadelphia and Paoli, PA and serving all of PA, NJ, NY and FL virtually via HIPAA compliant tele-psychiatry. Individuals seeking not only evaluations but long-term psychiatric care, can contact Rittenhouse Psychiatric Associates directly.
These videos aim to increase awareness and discussion of mental health topics and to encourage struggling individuals to schedule an appointment directly with a mental health provider. Mental health needs to be normalized, and simply speaking about mental health topics openly, is an important first step.
Dr. Pagnani and Rittenhouse Psychiatric Associates are NOT advocating for or against the use of any mentioned psychiatric medications for any specific individual. Additionally, any side effects mentioned are not a complete list of potential side effects or contraindications to taking any mentioned medications, and all risks and benefits of a medication should be discussed with an individual’s provider at an appointment, before starting, stopping or making changes to a medication regimen.
