PAXLOVID for COVID-19 (Part 1 - Main Video) - 'Some Need-to-Know Info!' - PHARMACIST Fi Side Effects 2 Views • 5 months ago

PHARMACIST Fi shares how you and your doctor, together, can try to avoid medicine interactions between Paxlovid and some other medicines, herbal medicines, vitamin & mineral products, & supplements.

While PHARMACIST Fi shares general ways to try to avoid Paxlovid medicine interactions in this video, she is currently making another video which looks at quite a few specific Paxlovid interactions to avoid - so stay tuned for that!

PHARMACIST Fi is also making a video about how to take Paxlovid - because it needs to be taken a very particular way to work well.

Here is the link to the PHARMACIST Fi video about CMIs (a CMI is a 'Consumer Medicine Information' document, which is called a 'Medication Guide' in the U.S.A., or a 'Patient Information Leaflet' in the U.K.; each medicine has a CMI, which either comes with the medicine or can be printed or emailed to you by a pharmacist or doctor):

&
here is a link to the free NPS MedicineWise App, which you are welcome to use to help you make a Medicines, Allergies & Contacts List:
https://www.nps.org.au/medicinewiseapp

Here is a link to the Australian Paxlovid CMI created June 2022 (which is the current version for July 2022) - but ask your pharmacist for the latest CMI if Paxlovid is ever prescribed for you, in case the CMI gets changed before then:
https://www.ebs.tga.gov.au/ebs/picmi/picmirepository.nsf/pdf?OpenAgent&id=CP-2022-CMI-01050-1&d=20220812172310101

While PHARMACIST Fi mentions in this video that the manufacturer of Paxlovid currently advises you not to use Paxlovid if you are breastfeeding or pregnant, here is some further info on these topics....

The current (July 2022) CMI for Paxlovid also more specifically advises:
"You should not breast-feed your baby while taking PAXLOVID and for 7 days after stopping treatment."

Because Paxlovid's manufacturer currently (July 2022) advises against taking Paxlovid if you are pregnant, they also advise in the current (July 2022) Australian Paxlovid CMI that:
"Women of child-bearing potential should be on an effective contraceptive method before starting treatment and for 7 days after stopping treatment" with Paxlovid.
Another option would be to not have sex during Paxlovid treatment and also not have sex until it is more than 7 days after you stopped Paxlovid treatment.

During Paxlovid treatment and also for one month after stopping treatment, Paxlovid might reduce effectiveness of many common types of birth control pills, and some hormonal devices like the vaginal ring (combined contraceptives which contain ethinylestradiol; this may be written as ethinyl estradiol in some countries) - so if this may apply to you, watch Top Tip #10 in this video, and ask your doctor to help you decide which of the 3 options may be best for you.

If you would like more in-depth scientific info about Paxlovid, here is a link to the Australian Paxlovid Product Information (revised 20 July 2022, and current in July 2022) - but remember to ask your pharmacist for the latest product information if you ever need Paxlovid - in case the info in this document may be changed due to new research in the coming months or years:
https://www.ebs.tga.gov.au/ebs/picmi/picmirepository.nsf/pdf?OpenAgent&id=CP-2022-PI-01049-1

The rules around who is eligible for Paxlovid may vary between countries and over time (for example, Australian rules just changed recently), but the general overall theme expressed in the Australian CMI July 2022 is that Paxlovid is currently "used to treat COVID-19 in adults who are at increased risk of hospitalization or death", and Paxlovid Product Information July 2022 states it "should be taken as soon as possible after a diagnosis of COVID-19 has been made and within 5 days symptoms onset".
Your doctor and pharmacist will have access to the eligibility criteria in your country, which might change over time (for example: due to new research findings).

Here is a link to a PHARMACIST Fi video about medicine interactions (this video has general info and is not specific to Paxlovid), in case it may also be of interest to you:

We hope this info has been helpful for you!

Is Pepcid AC really a PMDD cure?
Is Pepcid AC really a PMDD cure? Side Effects 2 Views • 5 months ago

Reaction! 🎥 This viral video is from a little while back but I wanted to share my insight while it’s #pmddawarenessmonth!

Famotidine (Pepcid AC) is one example of a histamine H2-receptor antagonist, also known as an H2 blocker.

H2 blockers work by reducing the release of stomach acid, but they also block histamine receptors.

So let’s say Nina is suffering from PMDD symptoms like extreme anxiety and depression in her luteal phase.

She tries Pepcid AC and experiences dramatic relief in the lead-up to her period (and posts about it on socials 😋).

This likely means Nina is dealing with elevated histamine levels, and the H2 blocker is acting like a Band-Aid—blocking histamine receptors in the gut (and beyond) to ease her symptoms.

Yay for symptom relief - I’m all about it, especially when PMDD is affecting your relationships and life plans!!

But Nina, honey, do you really want to be on Pepcid AC for two weeks out of every month forever?

Should you? 👀 There are short- and long-term side effects to think about.

Let’s back up a sec - histamine isn’t the bad guy. It’s actually a compound your body makes naturally, involved in immune responses, digestion, and even brain function.

But when there’s *too much* histamine, that’s when issues can crop up - especially when we’re dealing with menstrual cycles.

Why? Estrogen and histamine have a bi-directional relationship, so if there is a histamine overload situation, it can make your ovulation or luteal phase feel like a minefield.

I’m all about root causes over here, so I believe Nina needs to focus on gut health, inflammation, and her immune system, so estrogen and histamine can finally play nice 💕

Are you in the same boat? Easy first step:

Famotidine Uses, Side Effects 💊💊💊
Famotidine Uses, Side Effects 💊💊💊 Side Effects 2 Views • 5 months ago

Famotidine Uses, Side Effects

What is famotidine?
Famotidine is a histamine-2 blocker that works by decreasing the amount of acid the stomach produces.
Famotidine is used to treat and prevent ulcers in the stomach and intestines. It also treats conditions in which the stomach produces too much acid, such as Zollinger-Ellison syndrome.
Famotidine also treats gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and other conditions in which acid backs up from the stomach into the esophagus, causing heartburn.

How should I take famotidine?
Use famotidine exactly as directed on the label, or as prescribed by your doctor.
Famotidine oral is taken by mouth.
Famotidine injection is given as an infusion into a vein. A healthcare provider will give you this injection if you are unable to take the medicine by mouth.
You may take famotidine oral with or without food.
Shake the bottle of Pepcid suspension (liquid) vigorously for 5 to 10 seconds prior to each use. Measure the liquid medicine carefully. Use the dosing syringe provided, or use a medicine dose-measuring device (not a kitchen spoon).
Most ulcers heal within 4 weeks of treatment, but it may take up to 8 weeks of using this medicine before your ulcer heals. Keep using the medication as directed.
Call your doctor if the condition you are treating with this medicine does not improve, or if it gets worse while using this medicine.
Famotidine may be only part of a complete program of treatment that also includes changes in diet or lifestyle habits. Follow all instructions of your doctor or dietitian.
Store at room temperature away from moisture, heat, and light. Do not allow the liquid medicine to freeze.
Throw away any unused liquid that is older than 30 days.

Famotidine side effects
Get emergency medical help if you have any signs of an allergic reaction to famotidine: hives; difficult breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.
Stop using this medicine and call your doctor at once if you have:
confusion, hallucinations, agitation, lack of energy;
a seizure;
fast or pounding heartbeats, sudden dizziness (like you might pass out); or
unexplained muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness especially if you also have fever, unusual tiredness, and dark colored urine.
Some side effects may be more likely in older adults and in people who have severe kidney disease.
Common famotidine side effects may include:
headache;
dizziness; or
constipation or diarrhea.

Common side effects of Phenazopyridine.
Phenazopyridine is generally well-tolerated, but like any medication, it can cause side effects. The most common side effects reported by users include:.
Headache:. Some individuals may experience mild to moderate headaches when taking Phenazopyridine. These headaches are usually temporary and can be managed with over-the-counter pain relievers. If the headaches persist or worsen, it is advisable to consult with a healthcare professional.
Dizziness:. Another common side effect of Phenazopyridine is dizziness. This can occur due to the medication's impact on blood pressure. To minimize the risk of dizziness, it is recommended to stand up slowly from a seated or lying position. If dizziness becomes severe or persists, medical attention should be sought.
Stomach upset:. Phenazopyridine may cause mild gastrointestinal discomfort, including nausea and stomach pain. These symptoms can often be alleviated by taking the medication with food. If stomach upset persists or worsens, it is advisable to consult with a healthcare professional.
Changes in urine color:. Phenazopyridine is known to cause an orange or red discoloration of urine. This is a harmless side effect and is not a cause for concern. However, it is important to note that this discoloration can stain fabrics, so caution should be exercised when using the restroom.
Managing these common side effects can greatly enhance your experience with Phenazopyridine. Remember to stay hydrated, take the medication with food, and follow the recommended dosage instructions provided by your healthcare professional. By implementing these strategies, you can minimize the impact of these side effects and focus on the relief provided by Phenazopyridine.

These symptoms can be life-threatening and require immediate medical attention. If you suspect an allergic reaction, stop taking the medication and seek emergency medical assistance.
Blood disorders:. In rare cases, Phenazopyridine can cause blood disorders such as methemoglobinemia, hemolytic anemia, or agranulocytosis. Symptoms may include pale skin, fatigue, shortness of breath, rapid heart rate, jaundice, or unusual bleeding or bruising. If you experience any of these symptoms, it is crucial to seek immediate medical attention.
Liver or kidney problems:. Phenazopyridine can potentially cause liver or kidney problems. If you experience symptoms such as yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, abdominal pain, or persistent fatigue, it is important to consult with a healthcare professional.
While these side effects are rare, it is important to be aware of them and seek medical attention if necessary. Remember to always follow the recommended dosage and consult with a healthcare professional before starting any new medication.
Managing common side effects of Phenazopyridine.
If you experience common side effects of Phenazopyridine, there are several strategies you can employ to manage them effectively:.
Headache:. Over-the-counter pain relievers such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen can help alleviate headaches associated with Phenazopyridine. It is important to follow the recommended dosage and consult with a healthcare professional if headaches persist or worsen.
Dizziness:. To minimize the risk of dizziness, it is advisable to stand up slowly from a seated or lying position. If dizziness becomes severe or persists, it is important to seek medical attention.
Stomach upset:. Taking Phenazopyridine with food can help alleviate stomach upset. If symptoms persist or worsen, it is advisable to consult with a healthcare professional.
Changes in urine color:. The discoloration of urine caused by Phenazopyridine is harmless but can stain fabrics. To prevent staining, it is advisable to be cautious when using the restroom and to flush promptly.

Phenergan 10mg Tablet Uses, Side Effects & Dosage Explained! Side Effects 2 Views • 5 months ago

Phenergan 10mg Tablet | Uses, Side Effects, Dosage, Review

Phenergan 10mg contains promethazine, a potent antihistamine that effectively aids in inducing sleep for adults with insomnia and children aged 5 years and older. It also manages allergic reactions such as hay fever and skin rashes, while alleviating nausea and vomiting caused by travel sickness. The sedative properties of promethazine work by blocking histamines in the body that trigger allergic reactions and vomiting. Additionally, it acts directly on the brain to promote relaxation and calmness. However, users should be cautious of potential side effects, including excessive drowsiness, dry mouth, blurred vision, and dizziness. Individuals with underlying health conditions like liver, kidney, and heart problems, or those taking medications for depression, should consult their doctor before use. It's crucial to avoid alcohol consumption while on this medication as it may diminish effectiveness. Always follow the prescribed dosage to avoid adverse effects, and consult your healthcare provider if symptoms persist. Overall, Phenergan is a versatile medication offering relief for several conditions but requires responsible use and medical guidance.

Why You Should Consider Phenobarbital For Alcohol Withdrawal Syndrome
Why You Should Consider Phenobarbital For Alcohol Withdrawal Syndrome Side Effects 2 Views • 5 months ago

In this ResusX video Dr. Rory Spiegel discusses the use of phenobarbital for treating alcohol withdrawal. He explains the physiology of alcohol withdrawal, which involves an imbalance between excitatory and inhibitory neurotransmitters in the brain, mainly glutamate and GABA, leading to symptoms like tachycardia, seizures, and agitation. Traditionally, benzodiazepines, which work by augmenting the effects of GABA, have been used for treating alcohol withdrawal. They require the presence of GABA in the system to work effectively.

Rory prefers a symptom-triggered approach for treatment, which means the severity of the disease state determines the medication dosage. This approach has been found to be more effective and less likely to lead to complications compared to a fixed dosing approach. He critiques lorazepam, a commonly used medication for alcohol withdrawal, for its short half-life and the need for constant re-dosing, which necessitates intensive monitoring and an ICU stay.

Dr. Spiegel suggests phenobarbital as a superior option due to its predictability in dosage and effect, wide therapeutic effect, safety, and long half-life that allows for a built-in taper. This makes the monitoring process simpler and reduces the need for ICU stays.

Dr. Steve Wolf: Phenobarbital is one of our oldest anti-seizure medications that have been around. It's indicated for both seizure types. The major problem with it is sedation, sleepiness. That's why the newer medications have a lot less sleepiness and side effects and waking issues.

Patty McGoldrick: Now it still is used a lot of times in infants, children who present with neonatal seizures, and that's one of the first medications that's given to them. It's also used for people who present in status, which is prolonged seizures, and who may be in the emergency room. Not necessarily as the first medication that's used for that, but somewhere down the line.

Dr. Wolf: The problem is in the emergency room, when you use it, it can really knock you out, and put you to sleep. And of course, if you give too much of it, it actually can affect your respiration.

Patty: Now, the other big issue with phenobarbital is that we've been using it for years to control seizures in newborns and in infants. And actually, the latest research has shown it can cause much more cognitive damage than we initially thought. So we're trying not to use that as rapidly as we did in the past. We use some of the newer medications. We try to get children off phenobarbital pretty quickly if they were using it.

Dr. Wolf: There were studies in the 80's showing that it can affect hyperactivity in young children, as well as reading scores and attention scores. So again, this drug can have a lot of potential cerebral side effects. That's why it's nice about some of the newer medications that are out there that might have less cognitive effects. So it's important to discuss with the people taking care of you whether this is the right medication for you, and what are the other choices.
